  • does not support UASP
Color: 500U3
not bad for what it is. feels insubstantial when there are no drives in it it doesn't support UAS mode, it's not even in the USB descriptor. might only be a matter of firmware. there are some quirks to the JMS567 in most devices, taking UAS of the descriptor sidesteps nearly all of them. it's not terribly slow without, two drives w/250MB/s read rates drop to 145MB/s when they're both being read longer term monitoring to come. there are some well known linux tools that can blink cabinet lights to show which hard drive or ethernet port you want to do something to but none work with this enclosure the USB ID is 152d:0567 ... show more

  • Almost a 5 star
Color: 500U3
Make no mistake, for the price, it's a good product. The missing 1 star comes it 2 parts. 1. It comes with a built-in sleep function that can not be turned off. Read on to see why this is a problem. 2. With the sleep function; it takes and ridiculous amount of time for the drives to re-initialize. Upwards to about 2 mins. This means you will be waiting that length of time just to begin using them. And I believe the sleep function engages about every 5 mins or so. It can get annoying always having to wait. ... show more

  • I HAD A BUNCH OF HARD DRIVES SALVAGED FROM OLD COMPUTERS & NEEDED TO BACK THEM UP.
Color: 500U3
I'm a computer geek from way back. I had systems that dated all the way back to the late early 2000's. The actual systems are long gone sent to the rubbish bin. I kept the hard drives because they contained things I might still want. I kept the SATA hard drives on a shelf in my walk in closet. Just recently after a deep clean I found like 10 of these old SATA drives. All but one still worked. The one SATA drive that croaked had only a backup of the Windows 7 operating system on it. I had no bloody use for that muck. So I set to installing 5 of the old drives at a time in this bulk hard drive enclosure. It was like going back in time. Tons of old files and pictures greeted me. Things I forgot all about but still desperately wanted. By today's standards the drives were tiny most being between 10 GB's, 100 GB's and a few at a whooping 500 GB to 1 terabyte. I downloaded the whole lot to an 8 Terabyte storage brick and again to a back up 8 TB storage brick. I can now safely erase and break up these old drives thanks to this very easy solution. The nice thing is that pulling data off five drives at a time was very much a time saver. I got things sorted in about two days. The fast USB bandwidth moved my files quickly the only limit being the slow old drives. There is nothing difficult about configuring this enclosure to see and access the 5 drives. There is NO special software or geeky knowledge. On Windows 10 it was just plug and play. There are 6 bright blue LED's on the side of the enclosure. One to show the unit is powered. 5 to show the drives in residence are operational and recognized. Windows 10 discovers the drives readily. At first their might be a few minutes before Windows see's the drives for the first time. When in doubt just restart. Be aware that you should remove the USB connecting this 5 Drive enclosure to your computer because often times these old drives have boot sector start ups and operating systems on them. These other OS's on these drives could confuse your start up processes and cause your system to hang. Let your system start first then once the Operating system is fully up and running only then do you plug in the 5 drive enclosure. Wait a few minutes and Windows should recognize the drives. It's your call but at times Windows will ask to scan and correct flaws it finds on the older drives. I'd say unless you know very well what you are doing always refuse to let Windows "Fix" the drives because if the Window's fix breaks the drive it might not be recoverable. I'm advising caution when asked to let Windows repair a drive but of course its your call. Hope this helps. The 5 drive enclosure was worth its weight in gold for me as it brought back pictures and documents of old I'd forgotten about. ... show more

  • Very short cords give it a 3
Color: 500C3
I just received the drive enclosure and set it up. I wanted to put it on the other side of my desk but I ran into a terrible snag... I did a speed test on the enclosure with the data cable that came with it and I was seeing 189mb/s with bursts to 240mb/s. The PROBLEM is that the data cable that came with the enclosure is only 1 meter (abt 3 feet) long. While this drive came with a data cable that is a USB-C to USB3.0 it would be logical that an authentic Apple USB-C to USB-C would be just as fast... connecting it directly to the Macbook Pro USB-C motherboard socket without going through a USB expansion hub or USB3.0 converter. I got out my Macbook Pro USB-C to USB-C data cable and ran the speed test connected natively to my Macbook Pro, with that 36mb/s was the best speed I saw. I then tried 2 more USB-C to USB-C cables with the same slow speed. As for the overall utility of the enclosure, I will have to review in the future but, If you want to put this box at a distance from your computer where desk real estate is more open, I don't think the speed even with an official Apple data cable will work for you. I ended up placing it on my desktop within 2 feet of my Macbook Pro to utilize the best speed. The power cable is also not terribly long either and has a bulky power transformer inline. The actual power cable to the transformer is less than 3 feet (closer to 2 feet) and the power outlet to the enclosure is 3 feet so I had to route an extension cord to the top of my desk again to accommodate a close proximity to my computer. So the enclosure is 2 feet from my Macbook Pro connected with the USB-C to USB3.0 that came with it and the transfer speed is good but I would have liked to put it on the other side of my desk and out of my personal space! ... show more

  • Works as expected
Color: 200C3
My only gripe with the drive bays is that the drives sit in their loosely. There are no rails to keep the drives still. I used a block of styrofoam that came in the box to wedge between the drives to keep them from moving back and forth.

  • Works great once cable is replaced.
Color: 500U3
I used this to add old drives I had lying around to my unraid server. The included USB cable severely bottlenecks the speed, but once replaced I get speeds higher than advertised. If all drives are spun up at once it gets a little toasty, but I usually only one or two spun up at a time.
