  • Very Basic Stuff!
There is some good info on this DVD for the beginner, especially the techniques on various brush strokes and ways to use a knife. Fun techniques to change the feel and tone of a painting are also included, along with a couple of helpful tips about fixing mistakes with kitchen wipes. Also included is a rather long segment on color mixing. This portion of the DVD is 2/3 of the content. The instructor's paintings are gorgeous, and this product leads you to believe you'll get to see one of these works from start to finish, but you don't. All the projects are just small portions of mostly finished paintings. Not to say they're not helpful, but to be honest, I've gotten more out of a 30 minute episode of Bob Ross on PBS than I did this DVD. I mean, most people learned the color wheel in early elementary school. Even those of us who are new to painting probably already know blue + yellow= green, so a 20 minute segment on making colors is not really all that helpful. He compares it to a clock, with each number representing a color. It's a fun way to explain it to kids, but being an adult, I found it bordering on condecending. I get that the description states there is color theory and mixing included on the DVD, I just didn't think it would be as long or basic as it was. Rather, I would have liked seeing the lovely painting on the DVD cover from start to finish instead, not just a single wave or a grouping of trees. If your brand new to oil painting, you'll probably find plenty to use here, just don't expect more than basics. Overall, I give this 2 stars for the projects, 3 for the handful of useful tips on effects and tools, and 1 for the unnecessary and lengthy inclusion of the color wheel. ... show more

  • Clear and concise ESSENTIALS
While the info presented may be a bit basic; it is a good thing to revisit the basics from time to time, especially from such a professional artist, to keep on'e artistic skill's honed. (Much as a high ranking Martial Artist does not discard the basics of his teachings, but continues to perfect them as well as learn from other martial artists as well.) One must keep in mind that the title is in fact stating that this DVD is covering the ESSENTIALS of Oil Painting. It "geared" me to be able to follow more closely the rest of Mr. Vloothuis' instructional videos which I own, watch repeatedly, and have absorbed more from, than much of my professional training; and cannot recommend HIGHLY enough! Simply put, this is an excellent video from a slightly different viewpoint of an incredibly talented artist that, if you, yourself be a true artist, can lay aside your accumulated "Artistic Knowledge" of landscape painting and learn it from a new perspective. This video is just the beginning. Check out [...] ... show more

  • Wish it would have been more
I thought Johanne was a very good painter, for me personally I wish it would have had more instruction. It never went into detail on "How To".
