Description

These pencils consist of pure graphite lead without a wooden casing. Each one is protected by a thin varnish film and can be sharpened to an extra-fine point for precise details, or used at an angle for broad strokes. Designers and artists alike appreciate the ability to achieve fine and broad strokes with just one pencil. This set contains one pencil each of HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B and 9B, one graphite water-soluble Aquamonolith for beautiful watercolor effects and a monolith holder with cap.

  • Love
I love the monolith pencils! Super smooth, lovely finish, and a real pleasure to use. I warn you, though, don't leave them on a table where your dog can get them. Evidently, dogs love the taste of graphite! ...at least mine does 🙁

  • Perfect for Drawing and Shading
I love drawing in pencil and this is an exceptional set that would be appreciated by anyone who likes to sketch. The carrying case is what originally sold me on this purchase because I wanted a neat and portable way to tote a few different grades of pencils around with me. There is however, far more to appreciate about this set then just the case itself (which is lovely). You receive7 different pencils: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, 9,B and a water soluble 4B as well as a kneaded eraser, a metal pencil sharpener, a pencil holder and extending tip. A few things I did note which do not affect my personal rating of this set (but it may yours) is that the HB pencil is too narrow to use with the included pencil holder, even if you attach it to the extending tip first (the slider ring should tighten the clasp snug around the pencil but it doesn't even come close to accomplishing this). Not a big deal since you wouldn't use the holder or extender with a brand new pencil, but the benefit of having these tools is so that you can use every last bit of your favorite pencils. The other pencils do fit properly though and if you're like me, you'll probably never actually make use of the extender anyways (I just dislike having something not entirely functional in my set and if I take it out, then I have an empty space staring back at me and it'll bring out my inner OCD :D). The kneaded eraser is a kneaded eraser. I think they're junk but it's still convenient to have to pick up any unwanted graphite shedding from your paper when drawing with any of the softer pencils. If you use a stump or tortillon for any shading work, it's also nice to have if you want to clean off some excess graphite from the tip. Love the nice dark bold lines I get with the softer pencils and that I have full utilization of the tip to create greater depth in my lines since there's no wood to get in the way. The HB pencil is great for drawing some clean lines if your sketching an outline and you're not ready to go bold, or writing. Haven't tried the water soluble pencil yet but I'll get around to that eventually I'm sure. The plastic lining on the inside of this tin is a bit cheap (as another reviewer mentioned, one of my pencils arrived already poked through the plastic) but the case itself is solid and neat. Although these are woodless pencils, there's a light lacquer on the outside to prevent your fingers from wearing away at the graphite. Interestingly enough, I did notice that my 6B pencil is the only one not branded "CretaCOLOR Monolith" and instead reads "Pure Graphite WHSmith". I wonder if they're the same company or if they'll be changing up this product in the near future? I hope they don't ever get rid of this set because if I ever lose mine, I'll definitely want to buy a replacement - I like the carrying case that much :). A perfect gift, one that I highly recommend! ... show more

  • Wouldn't have believed it till I tried
I love arting. I don't know much about the technicalities of it but I sure do love producing it. I am not even really sure how good I am. I do know that I read many reviews about these and thought "they are just pencils?" Then I ordered them and tried them. I don't know exactly what it is about them, perhaps the extra weight I perceive as balance in my hand, or the smooth lacquer finish that almost feels like I am holding a fine art brush or even the way the graphite just eases off and glides onto the paper as if I am painting a stroke of a drawing but these things are magnificent. When I have them in hand it makes me want to draw. Even if I have nothing on my mind I just have to do something. I didn't know what the purple one was so I had to look it up. I will save you the trouble in case you don't know. You can apparently use it just as you would all the others but then you can go back over it with a wet brush to give the finished look that of a watercolor. The included one is plain black graphite in color but they evidently make a line of all different colors you can purchase. I thought it was neat. I am not sure how to use the holder. I imagine though that it is used when they get too small to hold with ones hand. When I first opened the kit I tried to jam the full pencil into the holder and thought it looked silly, so that is how I came to that conclusion. I was a bit puzzled by the cap as well. it fits rather loosely over the pencils. To me, it almost seems as if the way they are sharpened from the factory makes the bevel rather long so the point hits the tip of the cap before the edge has a chance to grip the shaft and hold on. If one were to use a different sharpener and shorten the bevel I imagine it would fix this, or I am just missing something. The sharpener is of good quality. I have many sharpeners, some I have paid a bit for that perform crappy and some that I have paid pennies for that perform admirably. This sharpener falls under the category of cheap and good. I use it first to sharpen these then use another sharpener to put a fine point on without wasting much graphite. The kneaded eraser is a kneaded eraser. It was larger than some that I have bought individually but by no means is it huge. I did find it to be of quite a decent quality though. I imagine that many of my epiphanies about this set are pretty common knowledge to most artists, but if you are just a good drawer looking for something other than a pencil than this may not be so common so i offer it here. My bottom line is that when I run these out I will buy more and continue to do so until I stop drawing. ... show more

  • No-Fuss Sketching/Drawing Starter Set
Cretacolor Monolith Set I started drawing/sketching again recently. I'm not a professional nor have I been taught. I wanted to play around with these and I really like this set so far. The pencils vary in darkness. I wish they gave you lighter pencils as well. The sharpener works great and the kneaded eraser works on light sketching. I like the tin case to store the pencils. I usually wrap a rubberband around it when I travel with it just so it doesn't pop open. This is a great set for a casual artist not looking for anything fussy. ... show more
