  • Is this my new favorite Star Trek?
Maybe! This show is a love letter to Star Trek. The writers clearly understand what made 90s Trek special, even as they poke fun at the tropes and some of the sillier elements. Writing and voice cast stand out. (Pumps fist in air) Lower decks! Lower decks! Lower decks!

  • Good for Physical Media Collections, Minimal Bonus Features
“Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 3” picks up after the events of season 2 with Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) of the U.S.S. Cerritos on trial and accused of destroying the Pakled Planet. Her daughter, Becket Mariner (Tawny Newsome), plans to prove her mother’s innocence along with fellow Lower Deckers Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells), and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). The story offers an opportunity to see the crew out-of-uniform and visiting Earth sites, such as the Boimler family raisin vineyard, historic Bozeman, Montana, and more. Subsequent episodes focus on Boimler deciding to stop playing it safe, Rutherford learning about his own past, Tendi dealing with stereotypes of Orion culture while working with a new mentor, and Mariner finding her place in Starfleet. The stories also include references to the Delta Flyer from “Star Trek: Voyager,” revisiting Deep Space Nine after the events of DS9, the fate of Peanut Hamper (Kether Donohue), a sequel to Mariner’s holodeck movie, references to the Nexus and Section 31, a deep-cut follow-up to “Symbiosis” from the first season of “The Next Generation,” and a celebration of the California-class starships. The relationships between the Lower Deckers and the bridge crew continue to develop with Phil LaMarr returning as Alonzo Freeman, Jerry O’Connell as Jack Ransom, Fred Tatasciore as Shaxs, Gillian Vigman as T’Ana, Paul F. Tompkins as Migleemo, and more. Guests on this season include James Cromwell as Zefram Cochrane, J.G. Hertzler as Chancellor Martok and a Drookmani captain, Susan Gibney as Leah Brahms, Armin Shimerman as Quark, Nana Visitor as Colonel Kira Nerys, Jeffrey Combs as AGIMUS, and George Takei as Captain Hikaru Sulu. The metatextual format of the series continues to reward fans who love their “Star Trek” trivia. This Blu-ray set is a great way to have a physical copy of the third season. Bonus features are somewhat sparse compared to previous seasons, though. They include “Docking at Deep Space 9,” about revisiting the famous space station, “Lower Dectionary: Season 3,” which includes behind-the-scenes information about this season’s stories, and audio commentaries. ... show more

  • This Series Keeps Getting Better!
The early shows were hilarious, but without much character development. That’s changing now. The series is really maturing, much like MASH did. It s really great Star Trek experience!
