This auger is constructed of steel. The weight makes it easier to get downward pressure, but is much lighter than the auger with a powerhead. The auger would also work with an existing powerhead if you chose. The removable handle is very comfortable and well constructed. It makes sure you don't rack your wrist when the blade catches the ice. This is better than many other handles I have seen. Blades are shard and it cuts holes easily. The blades are changeable and the blade guard fits well and is great for travel. This is a nice auger. The gloves are kind of weird. Maybe good for digging holes for plants. ... show more

    • The tip helps it from skating away from you.

My other ice auger I have just has the blades on it, without any tip. So, if you don't put your weight down on the drill, it can "skate" away from you on the ice. It's not horrible, but it's not the ideal situation either. The carbide tip on this digs in, and doesn't let go. It bites into the ice, and then lets the blades do the work. Which, by the way, the handle on this auger does wonders. I've never had on any of mine, and boy was I missing out! It just gives you the extra leverage to put pressure on it, and control it easier. You also don't have to worry about your auger going through the ice, because the handle sticks out far enough that you don't need to think about it going in the water. The extra blades are nice, because when one set dulls up, I can just slap on the other set, and hone the other ones to razors. If you ice fish, you could do way worse with a different auger. ... show more
