I have tried 2 different, less expensive chucks and neither would firmly hold the work piece. I decided to give this Nova chuck a try. I have a full size Jet wood lathe. This chuck is designed for both directions with a set screw (grub screw) that will keep it from coming off of the standard threads on the head-stock shaft when rotating clockwise. My lathe is the standard counter-clockwise, unidirectional, so that feature doesn't benefit me personally. I have used this chuck when turning spindles as small as 13/16" and as large as 2" square and both up to 24" in length (for work pieces of that length when the turned diameter of a center section is less than 3/4", you will want to use a good steady rest - the "PSI Woodworking LSR3 Wood Lathe Steady Rest" is available here on Amazon and is reasonably easy to use once you get used to it). The chuck never loosened turning those projects. It is well balanced and very easy to unwind when you've finished turning your project. The jaw depth is at least 1/2". You will need to add at least that amount to the working-length of the work piece to be turned. With the less expensive, non-Nova chucks, I had to stop and re-tighten every few minutes. Who needs that frustration? At least, consider buying this Nova. I don't think that you'll regret it. ... show more

    • Good chuck that could be better
If you have a lathe, you need a chuck, and this is a decent-quality chuck with a competitive price. I have been using it for a couple of months and it has been doing the job that I need it to do. I am not fond of how the woodworm screw is set in the chuck and how it holds pieces of wood, I would recommend not using it. I feel like the fold-out they include to act as a manual could be improved greatly by adding more information. There is no information regarding the JSPIN 1" Pin Jaw Set or JS100N 4" Bowl Jaw Set. If you go to the company's site, they want you to pay $5 for a digital download that describes their jaw sets and applications for each, which seems like information that they should be providing. ... show more
