🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The reviews for the limited edition Fire Emblem 3DS XL glow with enthusiasm, highlighting the system's aesthetic appeal and performance improvements over older models. Users appreciated the stunning IPS display, which offers vivid colors and deeper contrasts compared to TN screens, and praised the system's eye-catching design, especially its subtle yet pronounced dragon motifs. Despite the random chance of getting an IPS or TN screen and the absence of a charger and the game itself, the overall sentiment is positive, emphasizing the device's collectible value and enhanced gameplay experience.

Pros

  • 🎮 Stunning IPS display offers vivid colors and deeper contrasts.
  • 👀 3D eye tracking works effectively on the IPS screen, reducing dizziness during extended play.
  • 🐉 Beautiful limited edition design with dragon symbols and dual-color theme enhances its collectible value.
  • 🕹 Ergonomic system layout and button configuration provide a comfortable gaming experience.
  • ⚡ Improved internal hardware offers faster processing speeds.

Cons

  • 🔍 Screen type (IPS or TN) is random, creating a "screen lottery" for buyers.
  • 🚫 Does not include an AC charger or a copy of Fire Emblem Birthright or Conquest, necessitating separate purchases.
  • 🔋 Some units may come with a bad battery, requiring potential DIY fixes.
  • 🌟 Limited edition aspect might inflate the price for collectors and fans.

Should I Buy It?

If you're a Fire Emblem fan or a collector of limited edition consoles, this 3DS XL is a worthwhile purchase. Its superior IPS display, unique design, and improved performance offer a compelling upgrade or addition to your collection. However, be prepared for the possibility of needing an additional charger and game purchase, and remember the "screen lottery" if screen quality is a deal-breaker for you.

  • Lucky Pull for a Gorgeous Limited Edition
Purchased one of these beauties after having to return a Monster Hunter Generations N3DS XL due to a horrendous top screen (which was indeed a TN panel with color bleeding and 3D issues). I was a little hesitant to pay the extra money (especially with this whole screen lottery business going down with Nintendo), but I understand the raise in price since it can no longer be found in stores (not to mention the limited edition factor) - so I figured I could at least keep the device for collection purposes if it ended up being a TN top panel. Luckily I hit the BIG lotto and scored a dual IPS system with the one I purchased and everything was genuinely new and unopened. Right away upon turning on the system I could tell both screens were IPS, which was vital to me as the 3D eye tracking is rendered useless on a TN screen (for my eyes anyways). After testing Monster Hunter 4U and Generations on a TN screen, I can personally say there IS a big difference in the two types of screens - you can see way more detail and "further" in the distance with the IPS, where the TN not only fades the color, but gives distant scenery and objects a more "dull" appearance. The TN screen also makes some areas/objects (at least in MH) look ridiculously bright too - almost like someone set the white levels way too high. The worst part though is definitely the wacky and unstable "stable" 3D. For me, a TN screen causes the screen to blink or freak out when its on 3D mode (almost like it cannot track my face), whereas the IPS screen seems way more stable and consistent and I don't find myself dizzy when playing for long periods. As for this limited system itself - it is absolutely gorgeous, its covered in the dragon symbols from FE Fates which makes it look just completely epic. In my own opinion, I'd say its one of the nicest LE systems I have seen this far. Sure the back panel (black) is a fingerprint magnet, but that's to be expected with a glossy finish. I use a Duraflexi case cover (as well as a protective carrying case) on all my LE systems, so I can play without having to constantly polish any debris or prints off. I especially love how they made this system dual colors, even going so far as to make the inner buttons and slots the opposite color; it really is a sort of ying-yang feel to it - definitely fitting to the theme of Nohr VS Hoshido. The stunning screen graphics and the added c-stick (although the c-stick could have been better designed) is definitely an upgrade from my Pokemon X & Y 3DS XL (my only other dual IPS system) and I am super happy I can finally enjoy the new features of the N3DS without losing gameplay/graphic quality. I wish everyone luck on the screen typing though...again, like others have said, it is unfortunately completely random on whether or not you will get a TN or IPS....so may the odds be ever in your favor if you decide on purchasing one. ****And No the N3DS XL's do NOT come with an AC charger...this system also does NOT come with a downloaded copy of FE Birthright or Conquest either - both will need to be purchased separately, or you can use a charger from an older 3DS system. With this you will receive: the system, a manual, and the AR Cards. ... show more

  • Screen differences are significant
Received a model with a TN display on top, and an IPS for the bottom touch screen. Even scrolling a webpage down and viewing the exact same thing on the lower screen looked better - made the top screen look offcolor and just bad in comparison. Auctioned mine and got a typical black one with the better screen. After using it for maybe three minutes, i realized that the 3D is both better and more stable on the IPS screen as well - you're genuinely getting a much lesser product if you settle for the TN screens. It's sad that this is such a common problem with the Fire Emblem release, cuz the actual design of the casing is gorgeous - the emblazoned dragons and logos are subtle and the monochrome is classy. ... show more

  • Beautiful but bad battery
Husbands little brother ‘hacked’ his original fire emblem ds and bricked it. Finally found one that wasn’t god aweful on price and it came yesterday. It’s in great shape! Some sticker goo on the top that we can easily clean off no problem. Only issue is that the battery’s bad. Charged it over night and it didn’t take. So we took the battery out of his bricked ds and put it in the ‘new’ one. Works like a charm! Would have given full five stars if it weren’t for the battery :) ... show more

  • Very happy with the appearance
I've had the former version of the 3DS XL for a few years now, and when I saw this up for sale I decided to upgrade. I've been a huge fan of Fire Emblem since it came to the US. I didn't have to upgrade, and I probably wouldn't have if this wasn't a Fire Emblem edition, but it being a FE edition was enough of a selling point to get me to buy. The game does NOT come with it, which may deter some people from purchasing it. Mine arrived today and I'm very pleased with it. The online pictures made the dragons and logos on the front and back cover look very pronounced and almost cartoonish, so I was a little worried the DS would look childish. The dragons and logos are actually really faint and only jump out when the light catches them at an angle. I really like the effect. It's subtle but still noticeable without appearing garish. As for the system itself, there are some noticeable improvements over the original 3DS XL. The improved 3D is noticeable, as I can see it without finding the perfect centered angle like I did with the old one. The old 3D was basically not useable for me since it required you to fix yourself in one position for long periods of time. Plus it gave me headaches. This version seems to cause less eye strain, although I've yet to use it for prolonged periods of time, so I may change my mind and turn it off. The system layout and button configuration has a more ergonomic feel than the old 3DSXL. The internal hardware is faster, although I've yet to put that to the test. But, let's be honest, I bought it because it was a FE edition and the added features were just a plus. All in all, even without the game included I'm very happy with the purchase. ... show more
