Description

In Namiji, you are fishers from the Japan of yesteryear, navigating south of the Japanese archipelago, a few kilometers from the famous Tokaido road. You will need to have a fruitful day at sea to win the game. To do this, you will have the opportunity to contemplate magnificent marine species, to fish with a line or a net to fill your racks with colorful fish, and haul in your crustacean traps. You can benefit from stops to improve your fishing equipment, and you will also have to contend with the gods of the sea by setting offerings afloat, or by fulfilling their wishes that they express during your contemplation with the Sacred Rocks, for which they will reward you. Namiji is the spiritual sequel to the best-selling and award-winning Tokaido but is a standalone game with its own set of unique rules and gameplay mechanics.

We love Tokaido and were excited to try this. We love this even better. To be clear, it's not an "expansion" - you do not need to own Tokaido to play this, although some familiarity with that game may speed up learning this game. There's a little extra complexity, but in ways that enhance the game and make it more exciting without making it too hard. We've played 2-4 players and games take 30-40 minutes consistently once everyone knows the rules. We've played with as young as 7 years old and it's gone fine - minimal reading is needed. Like Tokaido, all of the game parts are absolutely beautiful and we're quite pleased with the quality of everything. We already had Tokaido and were excited to see this one. It is easy to learn and doesn't take too long to play. First time playing was a little longer because we were checking rules but later rounds took about 30 minutes and the setup took only a few minutes with a couple of people helping. First of all, the art is just beautiful and attention to detail is 5 stars. We first played this with some neighbors and loved it so we got it for the family for Christmas. Every time we play it I'm sort of amazed at how different it is each round and it seems like endless possibilities for outcomes. It doesn't take too long to play a round, even with 5 people. Our family ranges 14-70 and we all enjoyed ourselves. You don't have to be into fishing to appreciate the game or understand how to play it. It can seem overwhelming when you first begin but play a round and you get it quickly. We play the game several times in one sitting. Highly recommend! ... show more

This is a fun game similar to Tokaido. It is an easy to learn strategy game. If playing a 2-player game, you will use 3 pawns and whoever is in last place controls the 3rd pawn. You need to plan your moves in order to land in certain spots on the board. You can control the pawn to block your opponent or your pawn. This was fun as a two player game, but it would be more fun as a 3-4 player game. In a 3-4 player game you would not be the player directly causing problems for your spouse / significant other. I recommend this game and would not hesitate to give it as a gift to all levels of gamers. ... show more
