  • Planting flowers are much easier
Size: 1.6"x16.5" + 3.5"x16"
I used a spade or small shovel to plant my flowers or shrubs (I could never get the hole correct). This tool allows me to pre-measure the depth of hole, by placing the plant container nexts to the tool.

  • Works great!
Size: 1.6"x16.5"
Works great! It works fine with a cordless drill but I would suggest using a corded drill which has more power.

  • Handy Way to Make Holes in the Ground
Size: 1.6"x16.5" + 3.5"x16"
This review is for the 2-pack of augers: the 1.6 in and the 3.5 in diameter diggers. Both are extremely sturdy and look to be heavy duty which is a good thing for me as our hard clay soil is a nightmare to dig in. They are both about 16 inches long, which is perfect size for plantings I usually do, or for breaking up soil before I start digging. The 3.5” auger is downright heavy and, while I could use my cordless drill, I will be using my corded hammer drill going forward. In fact, my cordless drill, while good enough for the small auger struggled with the large one; in addition the vibration would cause the auger to loosen in the chuck, so a keyed chuck works a lot better. When I could bore holes, both augers worked like a charm, eating through the soil in no time flat. However, our very dry, heavy clay soil is so hard that both augers could only get down about 2-4 inches before stopping. For the amended soil in my flower beds it worked great and made planting easy. The clay soil proved to be more of a challenge: pre-wetting the soil helped but a corded drill was needed (and a lot of patience). This is a nice set to have and I am glad I have it, but if you have clay soil you may be limited in their use. ... show more

  • Very useful for the avid Gardener (or spouse!)
Size: 1.6"x16.5" + 3.5"x16"
These auger drill bits are pretty amazing. My wife is an avid gardener but is unable at times to dig holes for planting. Queue the favorite spouse, voluntold to dig and plant the new flowers. These auger bits are going to save me lots of time! I tried them out in our treeless back garden and they worked very well. The smaller bit immediately plunged into the ground. The larger one had a little trouble but worked just as well as soon as I fed it into the hole made by the smaller auger bit. Then I tried them in the front garden that has several trees and roots galore and the smaller auger had no problems while the larger did get bound up a little but was easy to extract. The auger bits seemed to be constructed decently and are probably worth the price as long as you don't expect them to drill for a miracle. A few notes: 1) Roots may slow them down. Especially larger roots. These are not strong enough to break larger roots 1/2" or more. The large auger got bound up on a 1/4" root (drilling under a Western Hemlock) but did break it after a little forward/reverse dance. Exercise caution drilling near or around roots. 2) You need a drill with a 3/8" chuck for these. I recommend a 18/20v drill/hammer drill (I have both Milwaukee and Dewalt) or better. A 12v drill may work for the smaller auger in a "clean" planting bed (soft soil without tree roots or large rocks) but I know it would fail in a harder test or with the larger auger bit. These will not work with an impact driver! 3) Set your drills speed to 1 for the initial hole drilling. This serves several purposes: torque is usually better at low speed, the auger will work through any hard spots, easier to handle drill and bit as it plunges into hard ground. The hole will still have dirt in it (loose and easily removed by hand). Set your speed to 2 and the auger will certainly bring most of the dirt out of the hole in a second pass. 4) Remember this is a tool and wear safety glasses. I had quite a bit of "spray" when I used the second speed setting. 5) Be cautions in heavy roots, rocky or hard clay soil. The auger bit will get bound up (especially the larger bit) and at that point the drill itself will torque your wrist if you aren't careful. Definitely use the smaller to predrill for the larger. 6) These are for small plants. If you need holes for fenceposts these are not for you! On the whole I am going to greatly enjoy these new auger bits. It will make planting season much easier and less time consuming. ... show more
