Always been a fan of Contra. While I really enjoyed the NES version; its the Arcade version that I have the most nostalgia for. The sound is a bit louder than the Space Invaders unit, which was a bit quiet. The controls are what you would expect from a My Arcade Micro, they don't use a bigger joystick like the upcoming Street Fighter Micro. Price is a bit high for a Micro Arcade and, honestly, I expect it to drop. I love Contra so I was willing to splurge on it at 50$. It's probably worth 40$ given the price of the also recently released Space Invaders unit. At 50$ it becomes less likely I can convince a friend to buy their own unit. Also I can't really justify having a second unit to play with my wife, so I don't know how realistic the 2 player co-op is for my use case. I think convincing a friend to buy the Street Fighter unit this Christmas might be an easier sell. That being said I think 2 player Contra would be the more fun of the two. The game has some of the emulation quirks I have seen on Mame emulation such as bits of the countdown timer temporarily remaining on screen after a continue. The vertical screen and lit marquee certainly give this version of Contra a premium feel; which has been the theme of this years' MyArcade line up. My wife and parents have bought me these units in the past and I have always enjoyed them though they often featured NES ports. The 3 premium models being released this year are all Arcade ports and each sports a unique killer feature. The reflected screen on Space Invaders and the 8 way joystick on Street Fighter might be more unique but I think Contra may be better source material for a solid 1 person experience that is suited to longer play-throughs. I like to sit these on my desk and play during downtime in my day. I probably have spent more time playing this Contra one than I should; I'm falling behind this week. ... show more

The game is super fun to play and my kids and their friends are hooked on it. It’s our fourth game console from My Arcade and so far it’s everyone’s favorite to play. The problem is that it burns through batteries very quickly. On days where the game gets modest use the batteries don’t last a whole day. We switched to using usb power, but there is a design issue with the placement of the USB port. It’s at the bottom of the back panel and if you tilt the console up while playing the game (which everyone in my house does) the cable puts a lot of strain on the micro USB port. After burning through all my AA batteries we switched to usb power, and the port only lasted few days before it stopped working reliably. I’ve ordered a set of rechargeable batteries, but at this price it’s a bummer that it’s not designed a little better. ... show more
