  • A solidly built fanless minipc for people with specific needs.
Size: N5105-8GB-256GB Style: Quieter 3C
I'm going to start off something everyone should know: If you are looking for a computer for day-to-day use, at home or at work, then you are looking at the wrong class of device. While it is technically capable of these sorts of things, it makes many trade-offs to fill a specific niche and would not be a good experience. If you do not have the specific needs this is designed for, then you would get a much better experience and better price/performance with something else - look for a i3 or i5. With that out of the way: The model I purchased is the N5105/8GB+256GB. This device is actually fanless. I shouldn't need to confirm that, but Amazon is the land of Caveat Emptor. MeLE is an original manufacturer with a product history, and neither rebadges hardware nor has their hardware rebadged. The build quality is solid, with nice fit and finish. Upon disassembly I was greeted with a design that was logical, thoughtful, and carefully planned. There are no bodge wires, commodity daughterboards, or etc... The internals are screw-mounted, with no hot glue. The bottom panel was initially reluctant to separate, but a quick check showed that this was due to thermal interface material between the CPU and the heat sink, which is attached to the bottom panel. Obvious thought was put into the placement of both the CPU and the heatsink, with clear intent to optimize heat transfer to the environment via conduction through the bottom panel to either the surface it's resting on, or to the mounting bracket if it's mounted to a device. This shows that they considered the possibility of convection not being an option, and took steps to manage heat in either case. That said, they didn't neglect the top surface - there's thermal material between the back side of the board and the rest of the body, ensuring that the entire body is participating in heat dissipation. The performance is comparable to other N5105 solutions, albeit slightly slower than actively cooled solutions due the tighter thermal envelope. The BIOS/UEFI firmware interface is completely unrestricted. All options, including ones that don't apply or are only intended to be exposed for manufacturing and testing, are available. There's sufficient I/O for most applications. This device is capable of passing through USB-C power to attached devices while maintaining a data connection. This is capable of driving a large USB-C monitor with a single cable. Video playback performance is good. It's not quite capable of 4k60 playback, but is capable of 1440p at 60fps On the subject of firmware, we now come to the drawbacks: MeLE does not appear to issue firmware updates. This may be a concern for some people and applications. The memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded. This is merely something to be aware of; it is completely expected given the form factor and price point when choosing a model. The storage is soldered-on eMMC, and cannot be replaced. This is mitigated by the M.2 slot. Windows 11 is a poor choice for shipping with this hardware: 1: The CPU demands of Windows 11 are higher than what a Celeron processor is able to comfortably support. Expect the system to spend much of its time at 100% CPU utilization even when idle. 2: The primary storage is a soldered eMMC module, which is not well suited for the intensity of Windows 11's background logging, telemetry, and behavior. Aside from performance-related concerns, this is more wear on the module than it should be subjected to. 3: While 8gb is fine for Windows 11, 4gb only meets the requirements for Windows 11 to run with no applications. Even a web browser would result in memory being paged out to the drive, further degrading performance and increasing drive wear. 4: The Windows update process is very I/O intensive, which compounds the performance bottleneck from eMMC. While I can understand that some people may get use out of Windows 11 being included, it would be better if it could be purchased with no OS. The process of getting this device to boot from NVMe is slightly inconvenient. Overall: I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this MiniPC, and can recommend this model for people who have a use case for a low-power fanless x64. What I would like in future models: While eMMC is suitable for many applications, I would have preferred a unit with two M.2 slots and the option to purchase a unit without storage. Barring that, an access hatch for access to the M.2 slot without removing the entire cover would be appreciated. I look forward to a model based on the N-series chips, such as the N100 or N300. ... show more

  • Awesome mini-PC
I had a mini-tower set up for my woodworking shop. It cost twice what this PC did and it has a quarter of the capability. The mini-tower only has 4GB ram, where this has 16GB. 4GB isn't really enough to run Windows. The WiFi performance of this mini-PC is great. The fan-less operation is perfect for my woodworking because there is no fan to gum up with sawdust. I just have to dust it off so it doesn't get too hot and forget about it. I use it to show my CAD drawings and cut-lists when I'm working. And YouTube videos when I'm not. I bought it on Prime Day so the price was excellent. Simply awesome all the way around. ... show more

  • Lightweight and powerful
Size: N5105-8GB-128GB Style: Quieter 3C
I do astrophotography and I needed a lightweigh PC that I could attach to my telescope. It was important for this PC to be lightweight because the load that you can mout on top of a telescope is very limited. After doing some research, I found the previous version of this PC, the MeLE Quieter2Q, and I bought it. Once I found that the updated version was out, the Quieter3C, I bough it too. There are many mini PC's on the market, but these two models from MeLE (the Quieter2Q and now the Quieter3C) strike a nice balance for my needs. They are lightweight, affordable and powerful. The CPU inside the MeLE Quieter3C Mini PC has a Passmark score of 4051. This score is similar to the score of a pentium i7 4th-Gen laptop that I have been using for work for a number of years. With this computer attached to my telescope, I can keep the telescope outdoors doing it's job during cold nights while I stay warm inside my home. I can login remotelly into this computer using Windows Remote Desktop and do everithing as if I was sitting in front of it. In order to attach this computer to my telescope, I had to drill a small hole in the VESA mount plate that comes bundled with this min PC. Using a small screw, I was able to attach the VESA plate to the telescope and then, I attached the MeLE PC to the VESA plate without having to drill any more holes. When I bought the previous version of this mini PC, I had a samll issue and I contacted MeLE for help. They responded very quickly and they were very helpful. The new version of this mini PC gets a bit hotter than the previous version, but this is to be expected since the CPU is faster. In my opinion this is an indicator that the body is capable of disipating the heat produced by the CPU, which I see as something positive. I have no complains whatsoever, and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. ... show more

  • Unreliable network port
Update 1/3/2022: Mele contacted me about replacing this defective unit. I shipped the old one back, and a new replacement unit was delivered. I've put it into service and will continue to test it. I'm happy with the customer service received thus far, and am bumping my review back up to 4 stars. If this unit tests out ok after being in use...I'll bump to five stars. Previous review: This little unit was great, for a while. Then I started having random network issues. The machine would just lose wired internet connectivity for no reason. I'd start to use the machine, and try to access the internet, and nothing would work, like the network card just didn't exist. After researching around, I found Mele has a YouTube video dedicated on how to fix it. Simple, just turn the machine off, unplug it, and plug it back in. So yes, that worked... but having to do it every day is not acceptable. I thought it might be a windows thing, so I repurposed the unit as a headless linux server, and found the same issue happens there... So the unit is now pretty much a brick... a small brick...which won't hold open a door. ... show more

  • Simple setup, flawless operation
Size: N5105-8GB-256GB Style: Quieter 3Q
I wanted a silent media PC for streaming youtube, prime, etc at 4K to a bedroom TV. This little guy does exactly that and does it almost flawlessly. Setup was very easy - this was my first Win11 PC so I had some adjustments there but this Mele Quieter3Q with Celeron N5105 just did it's thing. I would definitely buy it again although I might get an i3 unit with a fan for the den since the TV is far enough away a little fan noise won't be audible. ... show more

  • Silent, inexpensive, and hassle free Windows 11 on my big screen
Size: N5105-8GB-256GB Style: Quieter 3C
I bought this to let me watch YouTube and surf the Web on a big monitor in my kitchen, without a whirring fan running. At its low price point I felt like I was taking a risk, but it has not disappointed me in any way. I was especially surprised with how smoothly the Windows 11 installation went -- apparently the BIOS has a permanent key for Windows in it, so I don't even need to see the Windows key or provide it during install. I can't keep as many browser tabs open as I do on my laptop that cost 10x as much, but this handles a dozen open tabs fine. I mounted the miniPC on my monitor's unused VESA mount using the supplied adapter, which I had to trim slightly with a hacksaw because my Samsung monitor puts the VESA mount in a little well instead of on a flat surface. ... show more

  • The NVMe "storage expansion" slot does not support booting!
Size: N5105-8GB-128GB Style: Quieter 3Q
I just spent the day trying to clone Windows 11 from the Quieter3Q's onboard SSD to a 1TB Western Digital SN570 SSD (approved by MeLE) using the Macrium cloning software. The cloning appears to work just fine, but no matter what you do, including altering the boot sequence in the BIOS, it will NOT boot from this slot! You would prefer that you can do this because the onboard SSD uses a slower SATA interface than the PCIe slot's much faster interface. However, the machine isn't going to allow it for whatever reason. The slot is ONLY for "storage." Sneaky! Which is a pity because except for that, it's a pretty slick PC for the money. It gets quite hot when doing Windows upgrades. My FLIR gun recorded a temperature of 60 degree C at the top of the unit during the initial updates, which take over an hour to do. 60C is quite a bit higher than standard UL safety limits. You have been warned. I have it hooked to a 4k LG monitor, and the video is quite good. It has reasonably snappy performance. I'm not a power user by any means, so I don't give a rats rear about games or 4k videos. I'm still debating about whether to send it back to get a larger unit that has a fan, even if the unit runs slower than the Quieter3Q. It really does need a small fan. But frankly, if it had one, then the PC would be larger for it. If you need a small, simple PC that will drive a 4K monitor, it's a good choice. I wish I could run the OS faster using the expansion SSD slot. It's a big negative for me, hence the mere 3 stars. ... show more
