  • Made in China lol
I bought this to use for actual cooking and consumption of food and it suits that purpose, BUT it needs a few things first. If you fill the bucket up more than about half full, whatever youre cooking will leak out by the rivets that hold the handle on. Have had no issues with any of the other riveted parts. I replaced the cheap aluminum peen rivets with actual pop rivets, it still leaks but a lot less just a very slow drip whereas before it was a constant run from those spots. Lastly, I baked mine in the oven for a few hours to cure the paint because the first time you use it, it will give off nasty fumes and ruin your food. So bake it in the oven for like 4 or 5 hours at around 500-600 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, season the inside a few times with something greasy, oily or acidic, I like to boil cheap coffee with the grounds straight in the water or you can try rubbing it with bacon grease inside and baking again for a few applications. It will be good to go after that. ... show more

  • This is for camp stove cooking, not large campfires!
This mess kit works well and looks like a real surplus from germany. Personally i prefer this 1 to the surplus because the handle comes off. The fit on the lock for the handle is very loose although you can simply use some string or buy the leather strap that is suppose to be used on these. DO NOT use this on a large campfire as the metal is thin, it will ruin the kit. These are suppose to be used on small esbit burners, camp stoves, sternos, and small campfires. It also has alot of space inside to store your stuff if u go to a reeanactment, hiking, or camping. Mine did arrive damaged and dented so be weary. But it just makes it look like it has been through a battle or 2! Perfect for airsoft. ... show more

  • Not bad
There is no lock for the pans handle and it's very stiff to separate....otherwise not bad

  • Please understand this is not a WW2 mess kit.
Do not buy this with the idea that this is a ww2 style german mess kit. This mess kit is of the one from the West German Bundeswehr. Make sure to do research on distiguishing features of ww2 mess kits. Acquiring original ww2 or (identical) post war kits is quite affordable on eBay.

  • I was slightly disappointed by the quality of reproduction in this mess kit
I was slightly disappointed by the quality of reproduction in this mess kit. Of course it is made in China, which kind of speaks for itself, but I did at least hope the latch holding the contents of the mess kit together would function well enough to hold all the components together. Out of the box the mess kit latch was extremely loose, to the point where if the mess kit was gently swung around the latch would not hold. I bent the bottom part of the latch in order to create more of an angle where it could press itself against the bottom of the mess kit and provide a more adequate hold. It seemed to work well enough for the time being. I'm not sure if I would trust it from falling apart if I had it attached to the outside of my rucksack during a hike. Other than that the aluminum used for the mess kit seems to be of fairly decent quality, it seems to be relatively thick and would hold up to a good deal of abuse in my opinion. The paint on the mess kit doesn't seem to be of the highest quality, and would probably flake off with some use over a fire. For $20 I would say that this is a decent buy. The kit seems functional and would ultimately serve its purpose if put up to the test. ... show more

  • and don't like to schlep numerous pots/ pans around
I owned one of these (an actual Bundeswehr issue) years ago, and it was phenomenal! It was the camp cookware of choice, as I am a minimalist camper, and don't like to schlep numerous pots/ pans around . I want to say it is right around the neighbourhood of 1 lb, hence not that heavy. With a strap of some sort, it can be attached externally to a pack, especially ones that have tons of PALS attachment points, such as tactical packs. While this particular item is not Bundeswehr issue (I know Mil-Tec does manufacture for EU forces though), it is nonetheless as sturdy as the field-issued ones. I will guesstimate as to liquid volume capacity, probably about 1.5 L (correct me if I'm wrong by all means). If simplicity and functionality are your cup of tea, then this set is right up your alley. ... show more

  • Useful in real world camping
Camping, you get a pot you can hang up by the bail for boiling water over an open fire, a separate dish to eat or mix out of. Locking latch is weak but easily bent to lock better, its common with every country that makes them, the tie down strap is intended to hold it closed ( not included, but easily bought or made of 3/4” webbing). More functional than a Canteen cup for meal prep and water boiling. When not in use i store my fire starter stuff and some food in it as a protective carrier ... show more
