  • Easy set up & quickly effective
Color: White Size: 8,000 BTU
This is perfect for what I needed & well worth my investment. I have a small bedroom with a window that requires vertical placement of the hose. In order to adjust the window insert, a saw was required. I opted to skip this step, as the space left by leaving the second piece out was no more than half an inch & I didn't want to fuss with it. The unit cools my space almost immediately and while there is some noise, I did not find it bothersome & in fact, it provided some nice extra white noise for sleeping. The remote control is also very handy, but the temp on the unit & the temp on the control sometimes read differently. I can decrease the temp on the remote to 72, but the unit doesn't respond & will still read 74. I find that if I make sure the remote is aiming straight for the unit, this happens less frequently. It's much like using a TV remote, it can't have anything blocking the remote and the receiver. Also, because it is portable, when my landlord sent out a notice that on October 1st all window units needed to be taken down, I didn't have to remove mine. I could continue to use it when the days were still warm. Overall, I'm super glad I made the choice to purchase this air conditioner and would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple set up unit that really works & doesn't break your bank. ... show more

  • Really good as long as you understand it's for a single room and you read the instructions
Color: White Size: 8,000 BTU
As another top reviewer mentioned, it is important to read the instructions before you use this unit, as some of the functions are not intuitive. I've only been using this unit for a couple of days, so if I find anything wonky about it later I'll update this review. I used to have the Koldfront PAC1401W Ultracool 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner which I bought back in 2013. I didn't like it because I needed something to cool my studio apartment and that unit was far too large/powerful, and it was also very noisy. Because it was so large and powerful, it would turn on for one cool cycle and over-cool the room so I was freezing, then it would shut off for one cycle and it would get uncomfortably hot. So it was a constant cycle of being too cold or too hot. That was entirely my fault for choosing a unit that was too large for the space. This unit is ideal for a single room or a studio apartment. You would not want to use this to cool an entire house, a large garage or any other space larger than a bedroom. It puts out about the same amount of noise as a box fan, yet it is very powerful for its size. I can feel the air blowing when I am standing in the bathroom all the way off the opposite side of the room. The unit was easy to install. All I had to do was stack up the vent slats and put in the little plastic knobbies to hold them at the height of my sliding window, then shut the window and fix it in place with the security lock at the back. After that I plugged the exhaust hose into the unit and the hole in the window slat, plugged the unit in and off it went. It cooled down my room to a comfortable temperature in about 15 minutes and then shut off. By default the unit turns the fan on and off with the cooling cycle, but you can configure it to always run the fan on either low or high. One thing I appreciate about this unit, and a primary reason I chose it over other units of the same BTU rating: If you unplug it, it retains your settings and uses them when the unit is plugged back in. This means I can control it with any of the available cheap smart plugs also on Amazon. I have the Emporia smart plugs which not only allow me to control the unit with my Google Home device and my phone, but they also monitor how much electricity the unit uses. I can use Google Home to do things like: * "Hey Google, turn off the AC at 2am." * (When I'm getting ready to leave the office) "Hey google, turn on the AC" (so it's cool in my room when I get home). * If I forget to turn off the AC before I leave home I can turn it off remotely so it's not running the whole time I'm gone and running up the electric bill. * I can set a schedule so the unit turns off when I leave for work and switches on half an hour before I get home. * I can set an outside temperature target so that if the temperature outside gets to a certain level it switches on the AC so the heat inside my room doesn't cause my food and medication to spoil. The unit is pretty good at maintaining the temperature in the room without being annoying. The cool cycles seem to be at the sweet spot between being off too long and switching on and off too frequently. I did notice that sometimes when the unit switches on for a cooling cycle it goes GA-THUMP and shakes the whole room, for some reason. It's not loud, it's just... like somebody stomping the floor really hard. For that reason I would not recommend placing this unit above the floor like on a desk or table: It DEFINATELY will shake itself off and fall onto the floor. The unit is about the size of a half fridge and slightly narrower. You can get an idea of the size from my picture which has a plastic spoon in front of it for scale. ... show more

  • Worked well during NY summer cooling off my small room. Review + useful tips
Color: White Size: 8,000 BTU
Noise: when it comes to AC noise, pitch is everything. Louder/quieter is not as meaningful. This unit has a low hum that isn’t quiet but it doesn’t have annoying frequency to it so sleeping with it running isn’t a problem. It has a continuous fan option in the AC mode. Unfortunately it’s not available in the remote, and it’s not memorised by the unit, so when you switch AC off and later back on, you have to re-enable it. To enable it, you have to press and hold the “Mode” button on the unit itself. I always use it when I sleep, otherwise the fan shuts down along with the cooler and that’s loud enough to wake me up. With continuous fan you can barely hear when the cooler turns off/on through the night. Water: the unit has a container (non-removable) to hold accumulating water. In the hottest days I timed the time it takes to fill up and it’s less than an hour, at which point AC beeps and the cooler shuts down until emptied. It’s humid here so your location might differ. The unit has 2 drain outlets in the back. One in the middle and one at the very bottom (completely at the bottom). Instructions say use bottom for AC and middle for dehumidifier. I don’t use that mode so I put the unit on a chair and a regular household bucket under it (8 liters). I place it before bedtime and by morning it’s about 7 liters full. It’s not reasonable at all to drain it via the bottom outlet which is only 1” from the floor. About midway through the summer, I decided to experiment using the middle outlet instead of the bottom one. It works fine! So no need for the chair anymore, was such a relief. But there was still the bucket that has to be emptied in the morning. The middle outlet is a couple of inches below the bottom of my window, but I used the (included) hose anyway. So the water goes up a bit and then out of the window. No more bucket anymore! Overall, I guess I’m happy with the unit (after I figured out how to use it better). Don’t think it’s meant for large rooms in hot environments, but for smaller rooms it’s good enough to be comfortable and I never used it at lowest cool settings even when outside temperature was in 90’s. There seems to be an option to have a remote that has a thermometer in it, so it can be placed somewhere in the room and use that to send instructions to the AC when to on/off the cooler. I would prefer that to the basic one that’s included. Basic thermostat that’s inside this AC is similar to any other AC. Maybe I’ll see if I can find the other remote somewhere and if it’s compatible for the next summer because at night I like my temperature to be more exact. Fan mode Only: in the fan mode the back exhaust is a lot stronger than the main screen. If you need to use the unit in fan-only mode a lot, consider unplugging the exhaust pipe and turning the unit around. I know sounds weird and I’ve no idea why, but it works. In the slow mode the back exhaust is stronger than the front screen in the max mode. Considerably. It gets humid for most of the duration of the summer here in NYC, so I didn’t bother with this much, but in less humid areas I would definitely do this. Exhaust pipe: some reviews said it’s flimsy and hard to attach. It’s plastic, but I think it’s alright and should last as long as you don’t twist it really hard. Attaching and detaching was very simple too. One thing I noticed was, it gets hot, so I moved the AC as close as possible to the window and compressed the pipe to make it shorter and improve the airflow. ... show more
