    • It is surprisingly quiet. You barely know it is on.

After central heating and air went completely out of service last summer, I have been forced to look for alternatives because replacing the outrageously expensive central A/C is financially impossible at the moment. So, I have bought Frigidaire, Soleus and now Midea window heat pumps/AC to match or exceed BTU rating of broken central unit. The Frigidaire is the normal (non-inverter) style compressor heat pump. Works FANTASTIC even in sub-zero temps with defrost cycles but is really loud. The Soleus is an inverter heat pump and VERY quiet. It also works extremely well in very cold temps with excellent defrost function. The Midea is extremely quiet would be easily the best of all three but for one fatal flaw. No defrost cycle. It will not work below 41 degrees F outside. If your outside temps never go below 41 degrees overnight in the winter, you may not need a heater at all. This unit would be perfect and by FAR the best window heater/AC on the market if it could only defrost. What were they thinking? They snatched defeat from the jaws of victory here. Update: Sometime this winter Midea did a software update on this unit over WiFi since I have connected to the internet. They MUST have installed a defrost cycle. Because one day it just started defrosting when it was FAR below 40 degrees F. It formerly would give a low temp error code. This means it was software limited to not operate below 40. But now, it worked great even in the mid 20 degree F nights I had this winter. So, I bought another one while I could. Update#2. I did get another one as stated above. The newer one has different firmware, that I cannot update/change from the app for some reason, than the other one and DOES NOT work as well when it goes below 40 degrees F. So it is definitely something about the firmware involved. I have two identical units in the same house with different firmware and one continues working and defrosting LONG after the other shuts down and shows "Lo" error code. ... show more

    • Heat Pump Anyone?

After some research, I landed on tha media unit. I have a fish room that doesn't have a vent for heating or cooling. I didn't want to rely on tank heaters to keep the water at the correct temp for two reasons. Reliability and energy consumption. So I choose this window unit as it's fit perfect in my window, I didn't want to make holes and deal with sealing refrigerant lines. I wanted something that had a good Appearance and was easy to install. So far, this window unit has been working great! Apart from having to maintenance the unit it's been hands free for about 6 months now. It keeps my fish room at a constant 74° while simultaneously keeping the humidity at a minimum. Let's not forget about the energy usage. At it's max cooling setting it pulls no more then 400 watts. On it's heating mode I've yet to see it go over 400 watts as well. So it is impressively efficient due to that heat pump technology. It is absolutely quiet! I barely notice it running even on its highest fan speed and on turbo mode. I hope it will last! This has been a worthy investment. Considering how there is a very slim amount of units like this I was afraid it was for a reason. For the price, I dont know if you can find something better. I will say, the heating side of the window unit won't work below 41°. This is not a problem as the unit should not be your main source of heating anyway, it is not designed for that. Lastly, I'd advise anyone buying this unit to keep the air filter screen clean, it is washable. Another tip would be to clean off the outside condenser every other month to keep it working flawlessly. Make sure to power off the unit before you do.     • Not quiet but everything else is fine

I needed an AC for a small (about 100sq ft) room with a small window -- about 21 inches. I really wanted something quiet, and I bought one of the quiet GEs, but I couldn't fit it in the window. This easily fit in the window and could probably fit into a 17 inch window. I'm just using one of the side panels. I bought this unit because it claimed to be quieter than a household refrigerator. Hah! That's just a bald faced lie. It is no quieter than an average 5000 BTU air conditioner. FWIW, I put the GE unit in a different location and it is quiet as a mouse. You get what you pay for. This is bare bones, no frills. No remote, no thermometer. I give it 4 stars because it works well and the price is fine. I've had it for a year. Even when the weather is 90 degrees and more, it cools the room on low cool. I took 1 star off because it's not as quiet as they claim. ... show more
