  • Updated review on 12k BTU
***Update 6/21/2024*** Why one star vs three? Primary purchase desire outside of cooling and efficiency was quiet. Cooling and quiet have both become an issue with a 90 degree heat wave in my area as well as efficiency. The ac now rattles after pulling out of storage when run for a few hours. Reading online it looks like this may be due to a lack of water drainage. It tends to show up over time. I may not have experienced this before because I was running during mid to low 80’s and not when it was breaking 90 with high humidity. This was supposed to be quiet but when it gets hot it has to blow full speed to cool a 400 sqft space that has about an 8’ ceiling. It has been unable to keep that space below 71 when the temp starts approaching 90 (high eighties). This is noisy and the primary reason I purchased was for silence. I thought it would cool a 400 sqft second floor room as it claims 550, but there are clearly limiting factors. Under idle conditions this unit is energy efficient. When it gets hot, things are not idle and the unit has actually pulled over 1k an hour to try to cool a space to 69 degrees vs 300-500watts that it would normally run around when it’s not extremely hot. My bill for 3 units could spike up to $450 in a month if it had to run all month like they currently our for the 90 degree heat wave. Normally I’m around 120-150 without heating or cooling, so that’s a potential increase of $300 in my electric bill. I will note that my first floor unit is more successful in cooling its space and I suspect this is because my roof is less insulated than is ideal. A lack of insulation will result in even worse performance than what I’m reporting. Drainage is spilling out of the units onto my windowsill and down the wall. This style of water drainage over time will cause damage. Low fan speed now has a quiet annoying whine requiring a higher speed to block it out that annoys my wife, but less than the quiet whine. *** I purchased these for a house that could not only get warm, but because these claim to have a separate dehumidifier option and they claim high efficiency as well as quiet… a KEY FACTOR. I have mixed thoughts that weigh towards the positive, but I feel I can recommend and I’ll update if that changes. The quiet. For the most part these are incredibly quiet. I didn’t measure the decibel as a sound can be low decibel but drive you made. For the most part these are a quiet “whoosh”. I say for the most part because one unit had a rattle and noise when it switched to dehumidifier mode (it was on auto) but I haven’t noticed that noise since. So far I’d give these an A minus and an A if that rattle/grind noise doesn’t come back. Packaging: very good, which is why I was surprised that the back grill was dented. This doesnt seem to be impacting performance , so hopefully I don’t regret not returning. My second AC was fine and I expect my third ac to also be fine. Drainage: WTF!!! There is no water drainage. This is a huge flaw in the design and should be fixed immediately. Watching some YouTube videos it requires a unit tear down to safely create a drainage hole. You will also want touch up paint to avoid rust. Do this after you test that the device works because this obviously create potential return issues. Can it cool? Yes. It took longer than I thought it would to bring a room to a comfortable temp. Plan on a few hours. I also dropped the target temp to 60 F as the unit reads the temperature by the vent and thus will think it’s colder than it is. 60-65 seems to work to get a 66-70ish room temp. In rooms that are close to the 550sqft and have tall ceilings. (In other words I’m pushing the specs, but it’s working). Insulation: oh boy. They provide lots of foam and I’d recommend that if you care, to do a test fit, cut the thick side foam, and the. Determine where you want foam for it to be effective. The instructions for application are a bit of a joke as some applications have zero impact. Also, you want to easily be able to remove for the winter and reuse in the spring. There is enough foam to do a good seal, but not if you follow all the instructions as I found foam to be wasted. Check under the ac unit and you’ll notice light from outside. Wireless connection: To connect this requires matter/a google hub thing or to download the Midea app to a preferred app. Apparently it can’t just connect to google, Alexa or Siri. I have an issue with this because of how invasive and tracking apps are. Yet, having access to adjust from anywhere or as a set is a great feature. I just hate the lack of ability to control my data. This will work without an app, but you lose convenience The remotes: One remote worked well, one seemed to have issues connecting unless I hit the power button and then whatever action I wanted to “wake it up?” I haven’t tested the third remote yet. The remotes have no wall mount (booo) but if you lose them, the units all have buttons that work just fine with all the remote features. Cost: I can’t answer this. I will eventually update with a weeks power usage, but I don’t have a previous unit to compare to. Hopefully these are as efficient as advertised and real world impactful. Installation takes a while. For the most part it’s pretty simple but I only half read and had to adjust a few things as I better understood the logic of the device. I felt there was overkill on bolting and screwing, but that’s a good feature if you ever plan on opening the window with the unit in it. I won’t. Removing this in winter will suck, but all the settings and foam will be done so maybe it won’t be too bad. Another not on installation is the window. My windows have a lip on them to allow a finger to move them up. This required gently forcing the front out of the way do the window could slide down. Not ideal to me, but it seems to have worked with no issues. Installation people: I recommend two people. I was able to lift and mount, but some may struggle. It’s also nice (even if you’re he-man) to have some hold the cord and help keep curtains or other things out of the way and to eyeball to make sure placement is good. Save yourself a headache and do the buddy system even if they’re only moral support. Safety: the unit has two window safety locks to prevent the window from being opened by a thief. I had to pop them in to reopen after i discovered I needed to make a change. Overall: Overall I’m happy so far and once the holes are done and I spend serious time doing the insulation set up next spring (I didn’t fully do for two of the three units because Winter Is Coming, and I just needed something to slightly cool now) I’m hopefully the inconveniences I mentioned will be forgotten and I’ll just appreciate the unit. ... show more

  • Warning: Matter integration is extremely limited
I was in the market for a new window AC unit, and picked up the Midea U, which was announced last August as the first Matter-certified window AC. I was looking forward to offline control, and being able to integrate the AC into the smart home platforms of my choice. As it turns out, Matter support is extremely limited. Connecting via Matter, all you can do is switch between Cool mode and Off, and set the target temperature. For everything else, including Auto, Eco and Fan Only modes, setting fan speed and swing, you have to use Midea's proprietary app, which doesn't integrate with other smart home platforms. The one saving grace is that there is a working Home Assistant integration, but it's still a hacky workaround. On this evidence, Matter is not living up to its promise. ... show more

  • Very efficent and cool.
I had to improvise on the installation. Their instructions were for a more risky situation than a couple of feet off of the ground, and complicated. Also, not what I imagined. You can lower the window, but not the screen or blinds. The inverter tecnology is good, the unit starts up smoothly.

  • Warranty service is crap
Bought this for my sons apartment. Worked fine for a few months then stopped cooling. Filed warranty claim and was told too much trouble to repair (the control panel for cooling was bad) so they said they would just send him a check which never arrived. Weeks pass and called. They sent it to the wrong address but promised to send another to the correct address. More weeks pass and nothing. Called again and a problem with communication between warranty repair and check department would sort it out and get him a check. More weeks pass. Call and won’t answer. Crap unit crap warranty crap service. DONT BUY THIS CRAP. ... show more
