Description

Mice & MysticsONCE UPON A TIME In the kingdom of Owendale there lived a kind, but lonely, king who had no queen to help him rule the country or raise his son, Prince Collin. One autumn day an emissary arrived at the castle - the mysterious and beautiful Queen Vanestra. Before long, the King announced his intentions to marry Vanestra. And then the dark days came. ADVENTURE AWAITS. In Mice and Mystics players take on the roles of those still loyal to the king but to escape the clutches of Vanestra, they have been turned into mic. Play as cunning field mice who must race through a castle now twenty times larger than before. The castle would be a dangerous place with Vanestras minions in control, but now countless other terrors also await heroes who are but the size of figs. Play as nimble Prince Colin and fence your way past your foes, or try Nez Bellows, the burly smith. Confound your foes as the wizened old mouse Maginos, or protect your companions as Tilda, the castles former healer. Every player will have a vital role in the quest to warn the king, and it will take careful planning to find Vanestras weakness and defeat her. Mice and Mystics is a cooperative adventure game in which the players work together to save an imperiled kingdom. They will face countless adversaries such as rats, cockroaches, and spiders, and of course the greatest of all horrors: the castles housecat, Brodie. Mice and Mystics is a boldly innovative game that thrusts players into an ever-changing, interactive environment, and features a rich storyline that the players help create as they play the game. The Cheese System allows players to horde the crumbs of precious cheese they find on their journey, and use it to bolster their mice with grandiose new abilities and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. • It's okay. A bit unbalanced.
This is an okay game. There're a few reasons for this. 1) The box packaging is not good. The items are not tightly packed into the box increasing the possibility of having damaged items inside. There are no sectioned off spots for the cards, the many counters and markers, and the figurines that come with the game...this is board games 101. You should have dividers for the components of the game. This box has one divider that splits the box in half with all of the elements just thrown in with a lot of free space for making the items inside move around a lot inside the box. 2) The Rule Book doesn't really explain the rules and dynamics very well. Not very clear and information pertaining to rules mentioned in the beginning of the book are found later in the book with a lot of notes saying (see pageX for...). I guess the best way to describe the Rule Book is that it is dizzying; a lot of back and forth in the book to understand what is being said. Fortunately, I am an experienced RPG/Miniatures board game player so, I was able to figure it out, but for first timers or anyone new to the genre you may need to read the book a few times and do a trial by fire while referencing the book often before you get the hang of it. 3) The game is a bit pricey for what you get. I would have expected more miniatures for the price. Instead, you essentially use the same miniatures as the minions for Bosses and elites and are only distinguished by markers placed under them. They could have easily made Elite Rat miniatures and Boss miniatures to distinguish from the basic miniatures even if it was simply making them the same detail-wise, but with a different color plastic like red instead of tan like the rest of the figures. The game should not have been more than $50. I would have priced it between $40-$50. 4) The game says 1-4 players, while for the most part it is, if you decide to play it as a campaign (playing the whole story book chapter to chapter) there is a chapter, chapter 9, where only 2 mice are allowed so, only 1 or 2 players max are allowed to play this chapter which really sucks for the other players if you happen to have 3 or 4 people playing. Poor game design on that one. 5) It is unbalanced. The game seems to have a lot against the heroes. Terrain only affects the mice heroes, and significantly which gives an incredible upper hand to the enemy that is able to move freely over the terrain that otherwise limits the mice to one move and needing a success roll to get out and could possibly die if the rolls are not successful. Cockroaches are the weakest minion, yet they are more powerful than the mage and are equal as far as attack power goes to many of the other heroes and they come in large numbers. Cheese is hard to come by and is needed for the mice to use abilities and level up. You only gain them when you roll a cheese on the dice while rolling for search or for attacking or defending and most mice only get 1-2 dice and rolling a cheese means you get 1 cheese, but at the cost of not hitting the enemy or not blocking a hit against you or failing whatever it was you were rolling for otherwise. Thus, it makes you reluctant to spend cheese when you got it to use abilities as it will prevent you from being able to level as it costs 6 cheeses to do so. Also, there is a timer. If the timer ends and you do not complete the goal, you lose. There are way too many ways to move the timer close to the The End marker. Every time a hero is dies or is captured, a lot of the personal achievements like defeating 4 cockroaches in one encounter or rolling 3 or more cheese in a die roll, etc. not only gives the mouse a buff, but for whatever reason also makes it so the timer is moved one space closer to the end, and every time you complete a side encounter or when the minion cheese counter fills up with 6 cheese, which they get every time they roll a cheese or if you encounter greedy roaches which take cheese from the mice if they have any and add it to the wheel. That being said, the game is enjoyable enough. The concept is fun, but there are better games in the same genre that are worth the same amount of money. I had to make my own dividers using cardboard for the box and little baggies to prevent damage to the components which I recommend anyone who purchases this game to do also. ... show more

  • Great game for the family - Go buy it.
We've had a great time playing M&M. I've been playing it with my 8YO and his friends; they love it. I have found that they pick up the rules quickly and, after a couple of tiles, are making some pretty well thought out tactical moves. They are also young enough to get into the story line. making this age perfect for the game. My 6 YO loves the lore and basic mechanics, but is still a little young to understand the games nuance. That said, she can come and go and it does not interfere with the game; its easy to take on a character or hand them off, particularly if you are playing with less than four characters (we played with 2 people mostly - a great number to play with). The miniatures are solid with heaps of detail, making painting a worthwhile option. There is also quite a healthy community out there you sell 3D printed miniatures for other parts of the game if you get really keen. Overall this is a great little investment and a good introduction to the world of tabletop RPG. Go buy it! ... show more

  • Game Is Great; Plaid Hat Games (Manufacturer) Is Outstanding
The game is a lot of fun and is easy to play and then put down and come back to without losing your sense of where you are in the story or how to play. We've enjoyed it enough that we purchased both the Glorm and the Downwood Tales expansions. We don't play games a lot, having a lot of other interests and responsibilities, so it took us quite a while to work through all 11 chapters of the base game. When we did, we immediately turned to the Glorm expansion, which we had purchased some time ago and decided to purchase the Downwood Tales expansion. Unfortunately, Downwood Tales is out of publication. We found it second-hand at BoardGameGeek (in Like New condition!) bought it, and when we got it we discovered that though the game was perfect (the cardboard game pieces weren't even punched out), there was a figurine missing. We contacted Plaid Hat, hoping to purchase a replacement, though we were concerned since the game is no longer being made. Not only did they still have it, THEY SENT US THE FIGURINE FOR FREE; we didn't even pay for the shipping. Let me repeat that: they sent us the figurine for free even though the game is out of publication and we bought it second-hand. Buy this game--it is fun, replayable, and a blast to introduce others to for just one chapter--and Plaid Hat takes care of its customers. ... show more

  • Fantastic introduction to role-playing games
Super awesome game. Like D&D light. I enjoy D&D and I also enjoy all things story-driven, and this game is definitely a campaign, story-driven game. The miniatures that come with the game are high quality and all come in the same color (a muted brown). Looking forward to painting these miniatures to enhance gameplay and enjoyment. Another benefit to the game is that I thought it would be too easy given that it's rated for 7+ years old. It's not as rules-saturated as Dungeons and Dragons, but learning what rules are present is definitely a thing. I'm an avid board gamer and generally enjoy reading rule books to show others how to play and feel I'm pretty decent at comprehending rules -- this game is legit. The rulebook is well-written and fairly thick. I'd recommend watching any number of how to play videos online before tackling the rulebook. ... show more
