Description

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes are proving to be a disruptive technology and are grabbing the attention of the propulsion industry. AM- related advancements in new industries, supply chains, design opportunities, and novel materials are increasing at a rapid pace. The goal of this text is to provide an overview of the practical concept-to-utilization lifecycle in AM for propulsion applications. As with any new process, it’s tempting to get caught up in the excitement of AM and its application and to give little forethought to the potential economic and technical challenges. This text is intended to help AM adopters to be intentional as they apply these technologies, and to understand the basis for the lifecycle of AM components. It is a practical guide based on lessons learned and experiences with both successes and in failures in AM. The organization of this text seeks to guide an engineer through the intertwined basics, regarding design and implementation, as they begin their journey into AM. The book is also relevant for veteran AM users as a reference. While AM is still in the development phase and continues to evolve, the fundamental lessons learned remain of great value even as forthcoming technology emerges. While many metal AM processes are referenced, the book focuses on those with more industry maturity, including powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition. Read more

  • Most comprehensive book on metal AM for space and aerospace part production
I purchased the PDF version and I'm so much happy with the content of this book and its method of delivery, and the strucutre. Paul Gradl and his colleagues have done such a great job in collecting and explaining what you need to know for metal additive manufacturing part production. The content is not only for propulsion applications, but also can apply to other industries The content of the book plus the appendices are much much more valuable than the price that you are paying for. A lot of material that has been included are definitely years and years of study and hard work by the editors and the larger AM community that have been collected, organized and structured, and explained. This book is certainly a huge step forward for aligning the AM part builders, part owners, machine OEMs and everyone who is involved in the process of producing part with metal AM. A MUST buy for anyone in the metal AM arena! If you are a student, and want to pursue metal AM ( or AM industry in general) I highly suggest this book. Finally, I would like to thank the editors for giving me the opportunity to peer review the subsection in chapter 7. Thank you! ... show more

  • The go-to reference book on metal AM
This is a key reference book for anyone who is working in metal AM, or design engineers considering designing parts with AM – specifically Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) or Directed Energy Deposition (DED). The book keeps this theme of discussing L-PBF and DED throughout, which helps the reader continually consider which technology is best for their application. The book stands out in that it ties multiple practical aspects of metal AM manufacture and combines them into one reference. The first chapter introduces the reader to the two mainstream metal AM technologies (L-PBF and DED), with the advantages, the limitations, and some successful applications of the technology. The middle portion of the book dives into the depths of feedstock, post-processing, metallography, heat treatment, material characterization, and other important aspects to the process. In the later chapters, the book continues to guide the reader through the final steps of the design cycle by discussing the testing and certification of AM parts (from a NASA/ Aerospace perspective). In short, The NASA materials team has been exceptional in churning out practical and detailed information to break down the barriers of metal AM adoption for design and materials engineers. Their work is often a reference outside of the space/ propulsion industry, and this book is a great example of why that is the case: there’s no equivalent reference book at this moment in time. Regardless of the industry, this book is a key reference for those working in the AM industry, or considering AM for their designs. Note: I have the hard cover version of this book. I would recommend a PDF version to be able to search for keywords because of the vastness of the material covered across the chapters. ... show more
