Review from a professional VR dev with loads of different headsets. The Quest 3S is a great budget headset that can play games on par with the Quest 3 and most other current gen (late 2024) headsets. It provides similar color passthrough and is a solid platform with access to both the native Quest store for standalone play (no external PC required after setup) and (through the Meta Link app) SteamVR when linked to an appropriate computer. The build quality is fairly good, although the included head strap is likely worth an upgrade for most active apps and the glasses adjustment should be changed with care to avoid damaging the mechanism. Overall this is a great headset, but when compared to the Quest 3, the lenses in the 3S both limit the field of view and the in-focus viewing angles. This introduces some fiddliness in getting a perfect fit to see content as clearly as possible - these issues are much less pronounced in the Quest 3. If you've never used a Quest 3 then the difference isn't critical, but it is noticeable to those of us who use both frequently. The headset might not last more than a year or two for a number of reasons. Firstly, VR tech changes rapidly and has generally had large steps in quality and convenience every few years both in hardware and software. The headset might not be able to keep up with new technical requirements for fresh updates and apps after a few years. Meta has already stopped allowing app updates for Gen 1 Quests. Secondly, these devices are extremely sensitive to strong light sources such as the sun. When the lenses get direct rays from the sun into them they are likely to take some damage. Of the seven or so Quests I have had for work, which see an occasional trip to the car (once a month or so), all but the newest one have had at least one dead pixel (attributed to sun focusing through the lenses, but could be from something else). If you spend the money on a headset like this, it is likely worth getting a carrying case and not leaving it by windows. All-in-all this is a good headset on a solid platform. It is probably not a super long-term headset and could benefit from accessories such as a rigid head strap and protective storage case to get the most out of it. If you are new to VR or want something easy to use without breaking the bank, this is a relatively recommendable option. If you want the most out of a standalone headset, maybe look at the Quest 3 (or whatever the flagship is at the time). ... show more

    • Not impressed/Disappointing

I bought his because I’ve had the quest 2 for over 3 years and use it almost daily. The battery life was down to about an hour so I was hoping this battery would be like when I first bought the quest 2. It was fully charged when I started, and at 1:39:00 it said “low battery”. When I first got my quest 2, it had 2.5 hours before it gave the low battery alert. I was really hoping this battery would at least start out with the same life. 2. When I swing at the ball, I keep missing it or when I hit it, I can’t feel it so it’s not tracking right. 3. The lowest volume is too loud for me. I either have to turn it off all the way or get annoyed by the blaring sound on the lowest volume setting. 4. You would think the old adjustable head strap/gear that I bought extra would snap onto this, since the headset looks to be the same. Nope, I’m going to have to buy another one because that one part is a different length. I don’t like the one that comes with it. You can’t adjust where the pressure is so it presses pretty hard on the forehead until it hurts. The improvements are: 1. It will draw your boundary for you. It sees where everything is in your space and draws around it. I still had to draw mine anyway because it was too close to the items in my room so if I swing at the edge, I hit something. If you aren’t swinging, it’s probably fine. 2. The pass through is much improved. As soon as you hit quit, you can see your whole room. It’s also much clearer. You can keep the headset on and read your phone through it without taking it off. 3. The sound is more stereo sounding so if it’s not too loud for you, it sounds better. 4. The controllers have a button to release the battery covering so it’s a lot easier to replace the batteries. I always struggled with getting the cover off on the old controllers. 5. The old battery charger can still be used for this but it comes with a new one. This means if you have an external battery, you can still use it. My external battery worked fine. Update. I’ve been playing this for a week and got so mad at how badly it tracks that I got my old quest 2 out. This is quite a disappointment. The battery on my 3.5 year old quest 2 is just as good ... show more
