  • MOAB 2 GTX are waterproof Non GTX not so much
Size: 10.5 Color: Walnut
I have seen a lot of reviews of people saying the MOAB 2 boots are not waterproof. The GTX MOAB 2's have a Gore-Tex membrane sewn into the boot. They are waterproof up to about mid foot before water will seep inside. In other words don't step in deep puddles are deep streams. Non GTX MOAB's are not waterproof. Even if they claim to be. Gore-Tex IMO is the true measure of waterproofness. I have 3 pairs of these boots sitting here next to me. Two I have worn the Vibram sole down smooth the other is brand new. All 3 are the GTX model. The two worn boots I have wore the sole out before the boot. With Merrell you get what you pay for. I would not expect these boots to survive a through hike of the AT. People seem to think these boots are a heavy work boots. They are not. We are talking a mass produced boot that is under $200 bucks. There not even real leather. However as a walker or a moderate hiking boot they get the job done. Take mine for instance, I use mine as a daily work boot in a moderately strenuous work environment. My days at work are spent on an asphalt/concrete lot where I do a lot of walking in all kinds of Florida weather. Hot days with a lot of rain in the Summer and Cool days in the winter. These boots are comfortable right out of the box. No break in required. They let your feet breathe and keep them dry when it rains, but they don't last very long. I can get about a 14 to 18 months out of them before the sole is worn down. This is just how the boot is made. Don't expect a rugged hiking boot that will last you years and years. The reason people keep coming back to Merrell, myself included is the comfort that you get right out of the box. Just like I said these boots need no break in period. Use them, wear them out, they buy another. Just like tennis shoes or running shoes. Bottom line is Merrell MOAB's look cool, they look really good with jeans or shorts. The GTX version will keep your feet dry. The Vibram sole is grippy and knobby enough for hiking with light to moderate loads. There comfortable enough to wear all day while working. As I said you get what you pay for. I love mine. ... show more

  • Outstanding hiking shoes. Waterproof and very comfortable.
I purchased my first pair of Merrells a few years ago and instantly feel in love with the quality of the brand. They are comfortable, durable and the vibram sole is great for keeping sure footing when hiking and in the outdoors. That being said, the last model of Merrells has a few design flaws that left them a little wanting. They were not waterproof past a few weeks of owning them and even then they only kept dry if you got them a little damp or briefly stepped in a puddle. For the majority of the time I owned them, though, they soaked through easily in wet conditions. The inside of the heel also wore through rather quickly and the seam along the outsole began to part after a few months of moderate to heavy use. I wouldn't consider the latter two issues so bad considering that they happen to most shoes after prolonged use. The biggest problem was the poor waterproofing. I can say, however, that Merrell has addressed all of these issues with the new model of Moab hiking shoes, particularly in the waterproofing department with these Goretex ones. The heel is made of tougher but just as soft material that wont wear as quickly and the seam along the outsole is tighter and better secured than before. Most importantly, my feet stay dry no matter how much water I walk through or even stand in. You can tell that the shoes do take in a bit of water if you completely submerge them repeatedly but the layers of moisture wicking material in the mesh fabric parts of the shoe keep any moisture from getting too your feet. I have taken these Merrells hiking in rain and heavy snow, walked through half frozen creeks and along the frozen shores of Lake Erie. They stay bone dry and even keep my feet reasonably warm in freezing temps as long as I wear thick socks. Additionally, Merrell has slightly improved upon the design of the treads. I have gone up steep snowy forest trails and climbed rock formations and the vibram soles grip better than my last pair. On a looks note, the new Merrells look sleeker and the smooth Goretex material looks quite nice in my opinion. All in all, the Merrell Moab 2 GTX is a well made, quality, waterproof hiking shoe that is worth the price. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. I can't say if the non Goretex Moab 2 hiking shoes are as waterproof but they are likely just as well made and at the very least very water resistant. If you're looking for the quality but at a lower price, they would be a good bet. ... show more

  • The GoreTex version is worth it
I bought these to compare with a new pair of Merrell's Moab 3 light hikers. Both were available in the wider width I need and can rarely find. Both are true to size but the Moab 3 might be *slightly* longer. Both feel like you'd expect a light hiker to feel, with a pretty stiff and rugged sole, and both are comfortable on long walks. The tongue on both is a bit stiff and needs to break in; they pressed on the top of my feet and were a bit uncomfortable until they'd been worn a few times. The biggest difference between this and the Moab 3s is in the waterproof lining. The Moab 2s have genuine GoreTex, and the Moab 3s have Merrell's own waterproof fabric. And, after wearing them all day, you'll notice the difference: my feet feel comfortable and dry with the Moab 2s, and noticeably sweaty in the Moab 3s. Over the years, I noticed this in all Merrell's shoes, and now spend the money for genuine GoreTex if that option is available. ... show more

  • Gtx hiking boots
Very good investment for my hiking hobby. I like the fit and the way they helped me navigate my way through rugged turain and the wet boulders and rocks through waterfalls. Through mud and snow they even kept my feet dry and comfortable. I also like the fact that when I come home I just hose them off and they dry out and ready for the next hike! ... show more

  • Love them, zero complaints.
I bought my boots over 2 months ago and wear them a lot, not just for hiking. Just like my other size 10 Merrill’s they were a perfect fit right out of the box, no break in period was necessary. The Vibram soles are excellent and grip well even on wet surfaces. I’ve walked thru 3 inches of water and across a field of long wet grass and tho my jeans bottoms were soaking my feet remained perfectly dry. Even though the boots keep my feet warm enough I don’t think they will be too hot when it gets to be in the 90s here. I’m not sure they would be warm enough, without thick socks, in very cold conditions but I’m in Southern California. ... show more
