  • Good color selection, animal and eco friendly gouache
Color: Gouache Paint
I wanted some less expensive gouache for practice and classes rather than using my Holbein. I have tried several lower priced gouache, but haven't been satisfied for a variety of reasons. I use a lot of Meeden palettes, so when I saw this set - MEEDEN Gouache Paint Set, 24 Vibrant Colors - it caught my attention. I like that each tube has pigment information, and some of the pigments are colors I really like; there's also opacity and lightfast info on each tube. For the most part, I really like the color selection, although the pink uses a dye rather than a pigment. Otherwise there's some nice blues, reds and greens, and there are no cadmiums, cobalts or nickel used in any of them. The tubes are large for the price. The paints are thick but not too thick, they're creamy and smooth, and if you dilute them with enough water, you can use them as watercolor rather than gouache. I used them to make wet-on-wet washes as well as using them as gouache, and I found them very satisfying to use. I mixed some nice colors with them, and most of the paints were nicely opaque. I tried them on both cold press and hot press watercolor paper, and I preferred them on lightly textured cold press (YMMV). They have no smells. One other reason I opted to buy this set is that I've found Meeden customer service to be fast, helpful and courteous. I messaged them to ask if this set used any animal products (oxgall or gelatin), and I got the reply that this paint is animal-free, and the rep sent a copy of the MDS sheet specs showing the ingredients. There are two things to be aware of. First, the Cobalt Blue and Cerulean Blue are hues that don't use those actual pigments but are a mix of other pigments to approximate those colors, and the Prussian Blue is actually Phthalo Blue, which is fine with me. Having an Ultramarine and a Phthalo is what I look for in any set of paints, and this set has both. There is one potential downside, and how you feel about it depends on you. Gouache is a very matte paint when dry, and these Meeden paints keep their vibrant color when dry, but while they don't look chalky, if you rub the dry paints with a paper towel, paint will come off of the paper. This is normal for lower priced gouache in my experience, as they use cornstarch - or in this case, kaolin - to add opacity and that matte finish. Artist grade gouache uses larger pigment particles for opacity, so it doesn't come off when dried on paper, but I pay as much for one or two tubes of artist grade gouache as I paid for this entire Meeden set! I'm enjoying this gouache set a lot. The paints feel great on paper, the colors are beautiful, and a lot of the pigments are IMO good choices. These paints are vegan, have pigment and lightfastness info, and they dry to a lovely flat finish or you can use more water to use them as watercolors. Overall I'm very happy with them, and now I won't have to use my more expensive gouache for the class I am starting. I was torn on how to rate this set. On the one hand, the kaolin makes it chalky and the pink is a dye and not lightfast. On the other hand, the paints are beautiful and have exactly what I'm looking for at a good price. So consider this a 4 1/2 star review. ... show more

  • A really good beginner to mid level set, smooth and dries without cracks
Color: Watercolor Paint
I want to give these 5 stars, but they're actually a 4-4.5. I had been wanting to use Meeden's cheaper craft/child version for students but decided on these for making kits. They have just a few issues-but I fell in love with these paints. They are very lovely and I'm highly recommending them to beginners and crafters especially Pro: -Lots of paint in these tubes! -Pigment information right on the packaging -Easily mixed -Good range of colors that aren't similar to each other -Very good pigment load on colors, smooth and easy to use dry or wet -Pigment choices are spot on and very good looking! -Single pigment paints in a budget line! Amazing! -Their Scarlet is especially beautiful and if you like Pyrrole red, it's a very close contender! -Many of these colors are just spot on to what I expect from that pigment -They did not crack when I put them in pans -Lifted great Cons: -A little chalky (not excessively-but you can tell there's some extenders in there. It's very evident in their Pale green/Deep green which are mixes. -They don't move very far/Travel in water-this can mean that if you are fond of blends the colors can abruptly stop and dry strangely or jaggedly -Not as pigmented as brand names, so they can be a little bit pale when they've dried down -Some of their colors are a little bit off the mark: Gamboge is a little cool (this can be remedied with a little more orange since it's a mix), Their Prussian is just a phthalo blue with a violet shift that just looks like Phtahalo not prussian. I love to use a Phthalo blue vs Prussian but it's a con because I wonder why not just use it by itself with a single pigment color-it ends up not looking like Prussian at all if that's what you were looking for. -ONE too many violets and one of them is too deep. Their violet is a little too deep for me-it's more of a royal purple and the bright violet should be more of a lilac-but adding white to it makes me happy. -One too many yellows-The Pale yellow inclusion is a little confusing to me since there is Gamboge and the pale yellow/Gamboge sit too similarly to me. You could use the pale yellow to mix though if you enjoy a mixing yellow. --- Overall, I've been raving about these paints to art teachers and friends because it's quickly become a favorite! I don't think it'll be great for doing pieces for sale unless you scan first but for this price? Absolutely get them! ... show more

  • Fine low cost product
Color: Oil Paint
The question: "for beginners" is tough to answer. Oil paint is not really for beginners. It requires knowledge and practice. Beginners should probably stick to acrylic until they get the basics, like darkening colors doesn't usually mean putting black into the color, or lightening doesn't always involve using white. Also, the beginner should know that oil paint takes a long time to dry, especially without alkyd resins. That said, oil blends better, and is a higher standard, and this product works fine. ... show more

  • Good 'student grade' paint
Color: Gouache Paint
I’m pretty happy with this purchase. These paints have the pigment information on them, IMO this alone makes them “student grade”. My photo is of a small selection of the paints on mixed media paper. I used the pigment information to choose which colors to put in the mini pallet and I feel smarter already. On top of that, they dry well in the pallet and re-wet easily too. When dry on the page the paints are Not chalky at all, when dry rubbed with a tissue or finger None of the paint comes up. Also, at this very good price (less then $1 a tube), I will feel free to make large juicy puddles of paint to work with and experiment mixing with. ... show more

  • Creamy, opaque and lightfast at a great price
Color: Gouache Paint
I bought these to use teaching a class, based on a recommendation on YouTube. On first use, they appear to be excellent - great colors, very creamy, good coverage. I also like that about half are single pigment, all but one are very lightfast and the black is lamp black, so vegan. Minimal use of white in the colors to create opacity. Excellent set at a great price. ... show more
