Description

Modern MEINL frame drums represent some of the oldest drums used in music stemming from the farthest reaches of the globe. Ancient frame drums were traditionally used for dance, celebration and various ceremonies by providing rhythmic foundations as well as overall presence, as meditative harmonic sound effects are easily achievable. The Tar frame drum from North Africa and the Middle East has a shallow 2.5" depth shell and a thumb notch that allows for easy finger placement to execute pitch bending techniques and intricate rhythms played between both hands. These drums are typically struck with the fingers close to the edge where the drum naturally resonates to its fullest. This model of the MEINL Tar comes equipped with a True Feel synthetic head with a coated surface for warm musical tones. The lightweight and rugged Rubber Wood shells have outstanding acoustic properties with recessed lugs for minimal interference. Included is an allen wrench for tuning adjustments.

  • My first frame drum...
Size: 22" Style: Synthetic Head
I am a sound technician that works extensively with a percussion ensemble. In recent years, their reportoir has increasingly included frame drum performances. I've really been grabbed by the expressive qualities that these drums show. Many of the other drums seem to me to be just "hit"; the tars and their kin are "played". After a couple of years of "thinking about it", I took the plunge and bought a drum. two options that were presented by my drum-friends were either too spiffy and too expensive or more simplistic than I wanted. I found this Meinl family of tars that offers a synthetic head and the ability to adjust the tuning. The synthetic head may not be a purist's dream, but I look forward to more reliable performance in varying weather conditions. The ability to tune allows me to blend better with other pitched instruments, should I ever get that good. So far, after just a few weeks with my new toy, I'm very happy with the choice that I made. I plan to goof around with the drum for a while, and look for some YouTube lessons before getting any formal instruction. I've had some basic strokes and patterns shown to me and that has left me with my hands and head quite full. In short, I'm glad that I bought a tar, I'm very happy that I bought this Meinl drum and that I bought it through Amazon. Of course, I imagine that I could provide a more useful review after I've had the drum for a while and then after I've actually learned to play it... ... show more

  • While you can buy other synthetic frame drums such as Remo that look like skin and the sound is very similar to skin
Size: 16" Style: Synthetic Head
The synthetic head is just a plastic. While you can buy other synthetic frame drums such as Remo that look like skin and the sound is very similar to skin, spending money on this is not reasonable. I had to return this because I didn't like the sound, very artificial.

  • Great Sound
Size: 22" Style: Synthetic Head
I have 5 Meinl drums and this is my favorite. I love this drum! It sounds great. Has a big deep voice without that tinny, twangy undertone. Meinl makes great, affordable drums. I especially like that there is a demo for each drum so you can hear how each one sounds.

  • Beautiful sound.
Size: 18" Style: Goat Skin
However, if you are just learning, don't go this big. And of course, if you love drumming, this won't be the only drum that you buy. So don't worry about it being just right. You will either grow into it or not. If not, you can always sell it.
