  • Sturdy and well made.
Small but sturdy toy piano. I purchased for my 1 year old grandson and he seems to love it. The keys are similar to a pianos keys. It is quite loud! This is not electronic and mimics a real piano. I noticed that my grandson (just learning to walk) would lean on it and I worried that it would flip but I was happily surprised that it held his weight. Would recommend. ... show more

  • Great Little Piano with Even Better Customer Service
Received product and proceeded to test out the piano. Like other reviewers there was a strong smell, but it does appear to going away and that is just leaving it in my closet. I had one small concern though. One of the keys was clearly out of tune. It sounded like it was striking two notes at once. I decided to call Melissa and Doug to see if there was a solution or a fix and to my great surprise they shipped out a brand new piano free of charge! The new piano sounds better and doesn't appear to have any issues. I'm so excited for my 3 year old to open it Christmas Day. She has been asking for a piano for awhile now. As far as the size goes, it is meant to be petite so your child can sit on the floor and play away. I didn't want something large to take up more space in my small house. It has a simple sound which you would expect from a toy piano, but the notes are clear and correct and you can plink out simple tunes. This appears to be a great little toy, and I was so impressed with Melissa and Doug's customer service. I will continue to buy products from them and I'm confident if anything does go wrong that they will make it right! ... show more

  • The differences between this and a traditional piano.
The Melissa & Doug Learn To Play Piano is a good beginner instrument for toddlers. It looks and plays like a toy, but it indeed sounds like a real musical instrument. The included songbook will help those of you who don't know how to play a piano at least play a few simple recognizable songs to your toddler. My 2-year old loves banging on the keys, and they can withstand anything he can do to it. It is great that this piano is colorful to attract the attention of toddlers, but some may prefer a single solid color option like on traditional pianos (for those of you that do prefer a single color option, I would still recommend this piano until the company makes it an option). Also, unlike traditional pianos, striking the keys produce a sound resembling that of bells chiming rather than piano tones. However, the notes accurately emulate those of a traditional piano. Don't fret if you get this toy and become disappointed that it doesn't sound like a traditional piano. I see this product equally as a toy and a learning tool, and the time will come when your child will want to step up their playing to a real piano because they started with this toy. That being said, this toy is worthy of buying for most who want to introduce their 2 to 3+ year old to a real musical instrument. ... show more

  • Excellent toy for fun and playing recognizable songs. Not a precise instrument.
This piano looks nice and is very sturdy. I like the feel of pressing the keys. They have a nice spring to them. This is great as a gift for a children's first exposure to musical composition of any sort, as long as you're not too concerned with them learning how to read actual music. There is a music book with only little letters within circles placed on the bars, not actual whole, half, quarter, etc. notes to indicate how long to hold each note for. They are all familiar nursery rhymes, though, so that my children ages 4-8 have all figured out how to play it varying degrees of success. It is not well tuned, though, and the sound is quite "plinky" more like a children's toy than a musical instrument. The notes definitely move from lower to higher, so you can recognizes any songs you try to play. If you're not too picky on sound, I would recommend this. If a tunable or well-tuned machine is a priority to you, you should not buy this. ... show more

  • LOVE this Piano - for Kid AND Husband!
My husband plays keys, so of course we got a little piano for our 14mo old to introduce him to music. But the sound quality of this piano is fabulous! We lived in a small apt for the last year, so my husband has to keep his keyboard stored in the closet. He would literally practice on this little piano or just play a line when inspiration struck. And anytime my husband played, my son would jump on his lap and they'd play together. Many sweet memories made for the 2 of them together. It has gotten a lot of use and taken quite a beating. It's not quite as in tune after a year, but for a 2 year old, it still does quite well. ... show more

  • After revision, totally worth the money
I had reviewed this toy initially as not being worth the money, but let me tell you, Melissa and Doug delivered! I called them to tell them about the sound that the keys were making and the shaky top, and they were so awesome about it, that they replaced the piano! Their customer service blew me away! I cannot say enough about how friendly and helpful they were. To top it off, the piano came in no time at all, and sounds FANTASTIC! True notes and very sturdy, so much so that baby tries to climb on it now! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Melissa and Doug! Please see below for my initial review. In reading the reviews I thought this would be a good buy, but when I received it and opened it up on Xmas morning, I noticed that the top of the piano is a little shaky and loose. Not only that, but the sounds the piano makes are totally dissonant. This is disappointing because this was his "music Christmas"; I had also gotten him various other musical instruments. This was supposed to be the really special present, but he likes the cheap generic bongos better even than this. I am enormously disappointed by this piano. ... show more
