  • Beautiful, sturdy, recommend different order of assembly
Color: White Size: Twin/Twin Bunk Bed
A friend and I assembled the Max and Lily double bunk and two triple bunks, all of which are identical in their part numbers and assembly process. The double bunk was top quality and easy to assemble, but the triples, although clearly the same in their parts and assembly, were not nearly the same quality, so beware the newer version of the double bunk may not be as high quality as the one I received. The directions are easy to follow if you pay close attention to detail. However, we assembled them in a different order so that we weren't trying to lift a completed bed into the air while fitting the legs onto the metal rods that connect it to the lower bunk. Instead, we assembled the top bunk in its place, on top of the lower bunk. We started by assembling all of the headboards/footboards. Each bunk is slightly different, so be sure to keep the pairs together. Then we connected the bottom bunk head and foot boards with the 2 long boards that hold the slats. We pushed the bolts in all the way to help hold up the long boards, then pulled the bolts out one at a time to screw them into the nut, using an impact driver. We fully tightened every bolt at each step. We stopped there, skipped some pages, and inserted the 5" metal rods into the tops of the legs, and put the top bunk's head and foot boards on those metal rods, on top of the bottom bunk. Then we attached both back guard rails at the same time by first hammering the dowels into the head/footboards with a rubber mallet and then guiding the holes in the ends of the boards onto the dowels sticking out. Then we attached the boards that hold up the slats, again pushing in all of the bolts to help hold it in place while we removed one at a time to screw the bolt into the nut. Then we attached the steel bar on the top bunk. Then the slats. Then the front guard rails. And finally the ladder. The double bunk took us 3.5 hours because we took our time to fully understand the directions and to sort all of the nuts and bolts into different bowls. I highly recommend using an impact driver--you can see in the pictures how tight we got the bolts. The beds are sturdy and beautiful. I bought 6' foam pipe covers and cut them in half lengthwise and duct taped them to the underside of the steel bar to keep the children from bumping their heads. I paid more for the Max and Lily bunk mattresses and glad I did--they are high quality and a perfect fit. Can't wait for my grandkids to come visit! ... show more

  • Easy to put together
Color: Walnut Size: Twin/Twin Bunk Bed
We got the color Walnut. I think it gives good boy room vibes. I loved the pecan color too and think pecan goes better in most rooms. But again, walnut worked for us. The directions were great and very easy to follow. We breezed through. The first bunk I built with my husband in 2.5 hours (that’s with him leaving for a bit and me doing half on my own) the second set of bunks took us even less time. They seem pretty sturdy. Easily chipped or marked up tho as it’s a softer lightweight wood. Overall the kids love them and as parents they seem safe and look aesthetically appealing. ... show more

  • Very nice looking and great value, with IMPORTANT but non-fatal flaws
Color: Espresso Size: Full /Full Bunk Bed
My review addresses the quality of construction, and how to remedy the flaws. I would not install this in a rental property; get a metal frame bunk bed instead. OK at home or a vacation home. This is made from New Zealand pine. A good solid wood with few cosmetic flaws. The wood is brittle, which contributes to the structural failures described by reviewers. Very nice finish but with some odor that takes a few weeks to dissipate. It is NOT toxic, as claimed by some reviewers. I purchased the full over full, with twin trundle. First, the assembly takes a good amount of time, 6-8 hours minimum to do a good job, without the modifications described below. Second, the assembled bunks were very solid without any play (unlike other reviewers). You MUST fully and firmly screw in the hardware to achieve the rigidity. The head of the hex head screws sits below the level of wood. Some fasteners required quite a bit of torque to fully engage, ultimately twisting the metal of the supplied hex-wrench. Be meticulous, but be sure to not over-tighten. The trundle construction quality is crap. Far weaker construction with inferior doweled joints in comparison to the bunk. Now about the flaws. Reviewers describe 2 major failure points: 1. Fracture of the slats under the mattress. 2. Fracture of the longitudinal frame rail across the lower bunk. Here is how I addressed these failure points: 1. I added 6 1x4 tight knot pine slats between the supplied slats. Add these before screwing down the supplied slats. I think 1x3 would be fine or preferable, but my lumber yard doesn't stock this dimension. I stapled the slats to the strap interconnecting the supplied straps, but did not screw them to the side rails to allow a bit of flexion. This looks and feels REALLY solid. 2. I added to the longitudinal front side frame rail a zinc plated steel flat plate 1" wide, 1/8" thick, 72" long purchased at Lowes. I didn't add this to the back side rail since the weight causing the failure will be on the front side. Be sure to leave a gap between the slats and the frame rail to accommodate insertion of the flat plate. Attach to the side rails with 12 round head wood screws, #10, 3/4" long. Drill 7/32" holes in the steel flat plate, 1/8 " in the wood rail. Prior to attaching the flat plate, the side rail had a subtle but real deflection with my weight; I can understand why this would fail. After attachment of the flat plate, I could detect zero deflection, solid as a rock. 3. The trundle is hopeless. I glued the dowels and added slats to the mattress support. If it lasts a year I'll be thrilled. ... show more

  • Wonderfully Easy!
Color: White Size: Twin/Twin Bunk Bed
My wife and I put two of these together for the grandkids, one was twin over twin and the other was twin over full (both by the same company). We were both dreading it because I knew my frustration level would be through the roof before we were done. I'm pretty handy but these things are always bad. NOT THESE BEDS. One person could actually do it, but it was easier with both of us. The instructions were clear and precise, hardware was all pictured and sized, and pieces were all numbered. Most importantly, all the pre-drilled holes matched up perfectly. For their size, these are by far the easiest things we have ever put together. Quality? These beds are very sturdy, and they go together solidly. There is absolutely no flimsy feel when you lay on them. Over-all we are very happy with these bunk beds and would buy them again should the need arise! ... show more
