  • Fantastic book with every Marvel character you can imagine!
This is a fantastic book and was a huge hit with my 8 year old son. He LOVES it! He has another character collection book (Marvel the Avengers - The Ultimate Character Guide) that is tiny in comparison. I'm not a Marvel expert by any stretch of the imagination but I can't imagine any characters that aren’t in here. It has everything...heroes, villians, groups of heroes, groups of villians, “ages” (i.e. Age of Ultron). For each character, there is an information box that they call a “Factfile”. In the Factfile, they have the characters “real” name (think Peter Parker for Spiderman), their occupation, the location of their base, height, weight, eye color, powers, allies, foes and when they first appeared in the Marvel Comics (Comic name and year) Here is a tiny sampling of what is in the book: A-Bomb, Abomination, Abraxas, Absalon, Absorbing Man, Abyss, Achilles, Acolytes, Action Pack, Acts of Vengeance, Adam-2, Adversary, Aegis, Aero, Aftershock, Agamemnon, Agency X, Agent Axis, Agents of Atlas, Agent X, Agent Zero, Age of Apocalypse, Age of Ultron, Age of X, Agony, Ahab, AIM, Air-Walker, Ajak, Ajax, Albion, Alephs, Aleta, Liz Allan, Alliance of Evil, All-Winners Squad, Alpha, Alpha Flight, Alpha-Stone, Marlene Alraune, Alter Ego, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, Amazons, American Dream, American Eagle, Amphibian, Anachronauts, Anaconda, Anarchist, Ancient One, Andromeda, A-Next, Angar, Angel, Angela, Dirk Anger...and that is just 1/4 of the A’s! It is crazy! For some of the minor characters, there are multiple characters on one page. There is more space dedicated to the major characters. Spiderman, for example, has 4 pages dedicated to him. One of the pictures attached to this review shows one of the pages as an example. The characters are all in alphabetical order so between that and a very detailed index (there is a picture attached of one page of the index as an example), it is really easy to find specific characters. If you have a question about whether a specific character is in the book, you can comment below and I will look for you. If nothing else, the book would make a great weapon. It is huge! It is 439 pages If this review was helpful at all, please click “yes” below. I purchase loads of things on Amazon and rely very heavily on reviews. I want to start being a good Amazon Citizen and actually write reviews for a change (and I want them to be helpful)! Happy Marvel-ing! ... show more

  • Better than I could have imagined!
I ordered this book because I am a huge Marvel fan and I have the previous 6 volumes of the other Marvel encyclopedia and this one blew all of them away. This one goes into much more detail, has much better artwork, and has a lot more characters. The only thing I could find that I would have liked for them to have added would be the stats indicator (such as strength, speed, durability, etc) that was present in the previous version. But since this has so many characters in it, it would have been much harder to do that I'm sure. It is just something cool to be able to compare the strength of different characters. But all of that is available online anyway. The size of this book is also something that is great. It is really large and durable and easy to flip through, making it a really great coffee table book. I've been rewatching all of the Marvel movies and watching marvel animated series on Netflix and I find this is great to use whenever you come across a character you don't recognize. You can look them up and read all about them! It was definitely worth the money and a purchase I would make again. A must have for any true Marvel fan. ... show more

  • AWESOME!!!
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my nephew. As a kid, I was into comic books, but only Marvel, mostly X-Men. I had to take a look at it. I am very impressed with the level of detail that went into this. Not only is it visually stunning, but there is a lot of information...about EVERYBODY in the Marvel universe, so it is literally quite heavy. I thought of every character I could remember and ended up spending hours with this book. I wanted to keep it for myself afterwards. From what I could tell, there isn't one character who is missing. This is more than just a book...it is a truly a work of art. This is Stan Lee's legacy. Rest In Peace. ... show more

  • This large beautiful book is perfect for the comic enthusiast!
I purchased this gift for my daughter's boyfriend who is very involved in comics histories and the background of all these characters. • If you're an amateur comic book enthusiast like me then this book is great
If you're an amateur comic book enthusiast like me then this book is great. It covers quite a few characters and events in the Marvel Universe and the entries vary in length depending on their popularity. This ends up being one of the book's drawbacks too since in the years after the book's publication various characters have gained in popularity yet the book may only contain a brief description for them due to their relative obscurity at the time (Deadpool for example). Despite its rapid obsolescence and the numerous editing errors which other reviewers have already pointed out, this character encyclopedia is a wonderful coffee table book that will spark conversations and occupy guests for hours. True fanatics may find the book lacking, but it's not meant to be exhaustive. It's a quick-reference conversational piece, and for the beginner or amateur comic book fan a handy educational tool. It's certainly worthy of a place on the living room end table beside the AD&D Monster Manual ... show more

  • Nifty guide to Marvel mythos
I had hoped that this book might help me to sort out the complex Marvel mythos, but I was disappointed. Nevertheless, I recommend this book for the great art and its broad overview. I don't know if a veteran Marvel fan would lavish it with praise - I'm a newbie, lured in by GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY - but I think it's downright nifty. A big part of the problem, I think, is that the Marvel mythos has been around for so long and has served as a springboard for creativity for so many people that reconciling almost any part of it is just about impossible. But that complexity is one of the things that makes the Marvel mythos so attractive, too. Speaking of attractive, the art is terrific. Oops, I said that already. dsfp ... show more
