  • Works well, but is also a work out!
As a suburban guy, I had little experience splitting logs so keep that in mind. Due to a miscommunication with some landscapers, I found myself the owner of a huge pile of tree trunks and large branches. Not having ever used anything like this before it took me some time to work out a method, especially on the big trunk parts. There were zero instructions, but I got used to it after the first log. I was then able to work my way through a few more and have settled on doing one big one or 3 smaller ones per day. I'm using an 8lb sledge and let me tell you it is a workout. But I'm actually enjoying it. I'm in pretty good shape. By but splitting logs with this for more than an hour leaves me ready for a nap. I'm also starting to lose a little weight, so win win. So being too cheap to buy a chainsaw I'll never use again may actually have worked out for the best! ... show more

  • Shattered after 7 months of moderate use.
Why the hell is this painted? The thick paint made the wedge so slippery that the first couple ash logs would spit it back out after a good hit. Once the paint wore off it worked well. Edit: Completely shattered (at least 4 pieces) after 7 months of moderate use. Would not recommend this wedge.

  • Almost a miracle!!
I started using a straight wedge while waiting for this item to arrive. I had a lot of trouble getting the wedge to catch in the newly cut down oak I was trying to split. When I started using the diamond wedge, things got so much easier. This catches in the wood with ease. I have been using a combination of an 8lb sledge and 4lb hammer. I still use the straight wedge from time to time, but I primarily use this. Now, splitting is still hard. (Oh, my back!) But, in my opinion, this item is very helpful! I highly recommend using one of these when splitting. (One caveat. The item description mentions being able to split in 4 directions at once. I have yet to see this happen. Still, even without this, it gets 5 stars from me!) ... show more

  • Works great, if....
Here's the secret: make sure you have a strong, clever, 19 year-old son doing the work! I started by putting the splitter in the MIDDLE of a 36" wide stump, thinking it would EASILY make it fall a part. NOT!!!! Then my son put it a few inches from the edge, and VOILA!, perfect split logs! Sure it took much longer, but once he got started, this tool worked beautifully, but again, splitting logs is HARD WORK! ... show more

  • This will work, if you will...
Wedge is as described/pictured. Got it to replace a similar wedge I've used for 20 plus years, which finally broke off short. I split with an 8 lb. hammer, some tough oak, hickory, walnut, sycamore. Single splits are the usual result, not triples or quads. But it's much easier to use this style wedge than the traditional shape, it holds up well, and this was a better price than the others, as well as having a sharper point for easier starting. I have the luxury of my own woods to harvest, and time to do it, so I find this to be a better system than a power splitter. I've been splitting firewood regularly for 35 years, including both western and mid-south trees. This is the way to go, for me, and this seller did a nice job with the transaction. ... show more

  • A wood spitting weddge
It is a metal wood spitting wedge that is good for medium size dried wood. It does not split it 4 ways but rather 2. Mine came slightly bent, where I can see it breaking in two for those to mentioned it. I just have be know where and how to hammer it not to break it. The red paint does come off a lot. Just tell your wife it is not your blood when she freaks out. ... show more

  • Great & easy to use
I was surprised at how easy it was to split logs. I bought 2 of these from different vendors, different color but exactly the same in weight and design, one red and the other orange, BTW one was a dollar cheaper & both free shipping. I wish I bought this years ago. I used it on logs that were 1ft to 1 1/2 in diameter and less than 18in. in length, and were used in a backyard BBQ & campfire. They are excellent for any camping trip. Not once did it bounce out, however I always started out slow with a 3LB hammer until it was firmly in place and then I increased blows, if I needed to increase the blows even more I switched to a heavier hammer. Always use a face shield. Some have said that the splitter would bounce out, be careful, be safe. ... show more

  • works great
Others had issues placing the wedge in the center of a round. Not me this works great. It is much more stable then a flat wedge and it works better too. As others have mentioned it usually does only split in one direction but still works great. Split does not always occur until you have pounded it all the way in. But in my experience even large 2-3 foot diameter rounds split all the way through the center by the time I had pounded this thing flush. ... show more
