  • Last for ever in a perfect world
I've bought 4 or 5 0f this model in the last 20 years for my business. They feel like the big grinders, and will cut as well if you use the fast-cut wheels. The first thing I do when I buy it is throw away the guard. They have new dangers with the guard plus are not near as versatile. The nice thing is if you get hung up you can handle the torque better than the full size grinders which I feel makes them safer. where do they eventually fail 1 brushes wear down, you can order new brushes. do it before they start arcing bad 2 gear head goes bad, not if you re-pack it with grease before it starts growling 2 cord separates in side, you can only hang up dragging the chord around the shop so long before this happens. I re-wire from the switch to the plug with silicone shielded drop chord. 3 cutting wheel shaft gets bent, if you lay it on the floor it can't get jerked off the bench by your foot. They are fairly easy to bend. if not bent too bad your grinding wheel will wear until straight. I have all my old ones in a box to pick-a-part. so far I've used a switch, and a couple arbor shafts. the next grinder I buy will be another 9005B ... show more

  • Still in production for good reasons
This tool is obviously an older design (no rubber overmold etc.) but it's still in production for a reason. It has a track record for build quality and longevity. Many buyers prefer it over newer models, otherwise it would have been discontinued by now. This grinder is not as ergonomic as newer models. The guard adjustment requires a screwdriver, although you can leave it just loose enough to turn it by hand and it will stay put. This grinder is obviously tough and well built, and it has plenty of power. Parts are easy to get. It doesn't have a super thick barrel grip or an annoying paddle switch like most of the 4-1/2" grinders on the market. ... show more

  • Best grinder for all purposes
This grinder is a replacement for the one I bought in 1990. Did a lot of serious grinding with the old one, but it started to get a vibration.. This grinder has great cutting power and control on a 4 1/2" or 5" wheel with no problem, it is powerful enough to run a 7" wheel if the wheel is rated for the speed but controllability is compromised with the oversized disc. You'll not be disappointed with this grinder, it's worth every penny if you're serious about metal work. ... show more

  • Good grinder, but not as good as Dewalt’s 4.5 in grinders.
This is a really good grinder. However...Dewalt 4.5 inch grinders can be bought for $99 or less. They are just as reliable, higher RPMs, weigh a lot less and have paddle shifters. The cut guard on the Dewalt grinders are easier to work with and don’t involve using a screwdriver to loosen them. The Dewalts use the same size bolt for holding blades and grinding discs as the Makita, so whatever you can use on the Makita can be used on the Dewalt. The Makita is really good, but the Dewalt is the one I would buy. Credentials: welder & metal worker ... show more

Purchased this for work. I work in a welding/fabrication shop that has quite a few welders who wreck their equipment for no good reason. We had been using 4-1/2 grinders exclusively for years. Over the past 3 years I have probably purchased about 20 of the 4-1/2" of all brands. They all end up going belly up between 3-6 months of heavy use. This one is a bit more pricey, but so far it seems that it will hold up to the 300lb gorillas that use these things every day. It comes with the locking nut for the blades without the built in nut and the wrench to tighten it. Came in a normal little cardboard box. There are some studies out there on grinders that show how much money you can save by switching from 4-1/2" grinder to 5" grinders around the shop. The time saving is immense. ... show more

  • Great Product!!!
I have two of these, heavily used for over a year (welding shop). The only one that have not gave up. I know some of these can come with a factory defect but the ones that don't have last forever. Is kinda of gamble but I think is worth as my friend choose a different brand and we bought grinders at same time and she is already in her second one and I am still using my first. Definitely you get your money worth! Is not cheap. You can find other grinders cheaper but not sure will last as long as this one. I am getting another one so I don't have to keep changing from flap disk/grinding stone/ wire wheel all the time. ... show more

I have had this grinder for a year its the real deal not a toy. I know a professional welder he put me on to this grinder he said its the only one his help can not teat up he was right... It not to lite like most 4 and 4 1/2" grinders and not to heavy like most 7" grinders that will hurt you, it has just enoufh weight to it to give it a good feel. 5" disc are a littler harder to find tho... I have had good luck with all the Makita grinders that have the metal head its those with the cheap plastic head that are JUNK... The metal head grinders are rebuildable  Parts are inexpensive...This is a quality tool... . ... show more

  • Used item?
I think I may have gotten a used item that someone returned... There are abrasions on the plastic of the handle and the screw for the guard is stripped.
