  • I love this thermostat
The WIN100 "outlet thermostat" is great. I love how it maintains the temp I've set. It keeps my room temperature within about plus/minus 1 degree F. That nice tiny variation seems to be the default; the instruction manual says that you can change it if you want a wider temp variation for some reason, but I left it at the default setting which works fine for me. As another reviewer already mentioned, this thermostat does make a faint "click" sound when it turns on and off, but it's not as loud as my portable heater's built-in thermostat was, and also not as loud as my house's old dial-type inaccurate worthless wall-thermostats (some of those wall thermostats are quiet, some aren't; I always seem to end up with noisy ones which are too loud to leave on at night when sleeping). *Anyway* I use the WIN100 in my bedroom and, as a very light sleeper (just about anything unusual that I'm not used to, will wake me up), it did take me one night to become accustomed to the new different little click sound, but by the second night I was already used to the new sound and I sleep right through it now. I did move the WIN100 to a different outlet a few feet further away on the other side of the room (it's a fairly small room), so that also helps to make the slight "click" sound less noticeable. At least it's non-loud enough that I can leave the heat on all the time now, instead of having to turn the heat off for sleeping and waking up freezing like with my previous way-too-loud old thermostats... Or, just as bad, one of my many other previous heating situations involved the use of a different heater with built-in digital thermostat which was totally silent, no clicks at all, but unfortunately like many heaters with built-in thermostats, that heater was also infamously inaccurate with wild temperature swings, when it worked at all. I should point out that I was quite accustomed to temperature-control hassles since I grew up with a wood-stove as the only heat source in the entire huge house, but after 'discovering' electric heaters in the 1980s I instantly got used to the convenience (and economy) of portable electric heaters. :) So anyhow now, with the nice WIN100, I'm finally comfortable. :) I have not experimented with the weekend/weekday "programmable" features of the WIN100, so I can't comment on how well that part works. Instead, I just set it to maintain a constant temp 24/7 via its "Hold" feature. I keep odd (unpredictable) hours so a constant temperature works out better for me. Took me a minute or two to figure out, with the assistance of the printed instructions in the fairly thorough owner's guide, how the thermostat's "Hold" feature works, but it works fine so that's good. Keeps me from having to program-in the same temperature for all the days. Speaking of owner's guide - the instructions that came with my WIN100 are pretty well written. The English part was written by someone who has a good grasp of the English language, I'm guessing probably a native English speaker/writer, and there aren't weird translation issues like I've seen in lots of other products the last couple of decades. In addition to the instructions' well-written English part, there are also instructions in two other languages, looks like maybe (guessing) Spanish and French or something like that. I don't know if the Spanish/French/whatever versions are as well-written as the English version. As others have already pointed out, but I'll mention again here in case someone missed it :) this WIN100 thermostat *only* works with heaters that have either (a) normal old-fashioned thermostats or (b) no thermostats at all. However, if your heater has a built-in pesky digital/electronic thermostat (typically indicated, as far as I know, by a digital/LCD temperature display somewhere on the heater itself), that type of heater probably won't automatically restart after it's been unplugged (the WIN100 completely shuts off power to the heater as part of its normal operation, which - as far as the heater knows - is the same as being unplugged) so that type of heater wouldn't work with an external thermostat like the WIN100 (or any other, for that matter). But if your heater has the normal old-fashioned built-in rotating-dial thermostat (or no thermostat at all), that type of heater will probably work fine with the WIN100. See paragraph below for an easy way to test this. Fortunately for us consumers (I prefer the word "customer", actually) there are still plenty of non-digital heaters available everywhere, and (at least the ones I've seen) the non-digital heaters often tend to cost less than the digital heaters so that's an added bonus. :) You can test if your heater will work with an external thermostat like the WIN100, *before* buying the WIN100, by seeing if the heater starts up again after you've unplugged it and plugged it back in (when it's already operational, of course). Anyway I am extremely pleased, very happy, with this WIN100 thermostat. Wish I'd bought one a lot earlier - it's *so* nice to finally have an accurate thermostat that keeps the room at a nice even temperature. The WIN100 is currently hooked up to a silent DeLonghi brand "SafeHeat" convection heater. The DeLonghi's built-in thermostat wasn't all that bad compared to other heaters I've owned, but it wasn't anywhere near as accurate and useful as the WIN100 thermostat, and also the DeLonghi thermostat made a loud click sound which I found unacceptable when sleeping. The WIN100 is more quiet and also does a lot better job of maintaining an even temperature without having to fiddle with it all the time. I do not know (yet) about the WIN100's longevity - I've only been using it for about a month. If it breaks, I will update this review - you can count on me complaining about things that need complaining about. :) However, the thermostat seems to be of quality construction, so I'm hoping it will prove to be long-lasting. ... show more

  • A solid product that's easy to program
It's a thermostat that you plug into the wall and then plug an electric space heater into. And it has a programmable schedule so you can heat to different temperatures based on weekday/weekend and morning/day/evening/night. On the surface that sounds pretty unexciting, but here's why you need this product: 1) It's well-designed; it's produced by a name brand. The whole thing feels really solid and has been totally reliable through this winter's heating season in Chicago. 2) When installed, you will have two thermostats: the one on your heater and the one on this device, most likely plugged into the wall. (To make use of this, you just turn the thermostat on your heater up all the way and rely on this thermostat to shut off the power to your heater at the right time.) Having the thermostat that is sensing your room's temperature be AWAY from your heater means that your room will be heated more accurately to the desired temperature. 3) This thermostat has what is easily the easiest way to program desired temperatures that I've ever used. It's far nicer than the much more expensive "smart thermostat" that manages the rest of the house's HVAC. 4) If your electric room heater doesn't have a digital thermostat, this effectively adds that feature without buying a whole new heater. Also, if your heater's thermostat stops functioning reliably, this solves that problem without requiring an entire new heater. There's one very minor negative this thermostat has: its LCD display isn't backlit. I always have to use a flashlight (usually my phone's flashlight function) to see it clearly. If I could deduct 1/4 point I would because if they fixed this, it would be a perfect product for my purposes. Alas, they have room to grow. I hope they do. But in balance if this product fails I fully intend to replace it with whatever similar thing I hope Lux is selling at that time. ... show more
