Description

The entire corpus of Beethoven's piano sonatas is contained in this two-volume work — 32 sonatas in all. Volume One contains the fifteen sonatas from Beethoven's first period, including the popular Pathétique, Moonlight, and Pastorale sonatas. Volume Two contains the seventeen sonatas from Beethoven's second and third periods, including the Waldstein, the Appassionata, and the Hammerklavier. The music is reproduced directly from the exemplary Universal- Edition set edited by Heinrich Schenker. Combining scrupulous scholarship and profound artistic vision, Schenker achieved an edition which is universally admired by musicians and scholars. He used more autographs as sources than any previous editor of the sonatas, and he was the first to reproduce in print the visual impression of the autographs. For this Dover edition, Schenker's footnotes have been translated into English and his preface retranslated. A new introduction by Carl Schachter has also been included. Noteheads have been reproduced in a size enough to be read easily at the keyboard. Margins and spaces between staves are generous, permitting insertion of written notes, analysis, fingerings, etc. Running measure numbers and many fingerings have already been included by the editor — the last a particularly unusual and valuable feature of this edition. This edition will be welcomed by all pianists, both professional and amateur, for its accuracy and reliability; it is highly desirable for instruction, study, reference, and enjoyment. Read more

  • BEAUTUFUL EDITION OF BEETHOVEN'S SONATAS
This is a wonderful edition. The binding is adequate and if you work with it the pages will stay open without causing them to come out. Some fingering indications are helpful but an experienced player will use their own. This is not an Ertex edition but at this price it is splendid. YouTube has all the information you need if you want more instruction. I am looking forward to ordering vol.1 after I learn some of my favorites like Hammerklavier and the 3rd movement of the Tempest! ... show more

  • The definitive scores for the Beethoven piano sonatas, such a joy to play, such a joy to hear
These books, Vol 1 and Vol 2, replaced a much older Schenker set of Beethoven's piano sonatas that wore out! My wife, a classical pianist, adores Beethoven, and played and played and played the sonatas to the point where all the pages were falling out of the books. Seeing this, I offered to replace the books (aren't I nice) and for only about $32 she has nice new ones again. (Though it was sad consigning the worn-out books to the recycle bin.) If you want to play the sonatas, the Schenkers are the definitive set, the standard. Buy them and you’ll be delighted if you are a pianist, and equally delighted if you are the audience (like me). ... show more

  • I like this edition
I already had Volume One of this collection and it's very nice. The print is clear and sized well, with helpful fingerings. The book is bound nicely and the pages stay in place pretty well without a lot of fuss. A quick response from the seller and quality was as advertised. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. ... show more

  • Good music
Good music except difficult to turn the papers.
Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2023 by I bought two of these products which had been shipped not as the website posted. One without box it looked like from people return. The labels didn’t attached on the product. I am not referring buy these products at this third party.

  • Great buy if you are not a music snob
All the sonatas in two volumes, a great buy! If you are a music snob you should buy another edition (UrTxt). Also, this is a thick book (obviously, with so many pieces) so if you need it to easy open up, you too should consider another version. However, if you are just looking for the collection and don't want to shell out a pretty penny, this is the edition for you. One can easily prop it open with other books and the layout is great. Beethoven sonatas are not for beginners so if this is actually your level, you should be able to figure out your own fingerings. ... show more

  • Nicely arranged sheet music. Perfect for sight reading players
The sheet music is arranged to minimize number of pages per movement. For example, the first movement of the moonlight sonata is covered on three pages without affecting readability. In fact sight reading is easier as left and right hand notes are printed wilt less spatial distance.
