    • Good for leveling small areas around the yard and garden

I have a few uneven/low areas in my yard where a tree or bush has been removed or some other activity has produced a shallow dished spot. Adding dirt to these areas isn't difficult, but trying to level a moderately large area with a standard garden rake isn't ideal. I also have some raised garden beds in which we grow tomatoes, peas, bell peppers and cucumbers. Over time, the soil becomes compacted and requires tilling and/or the addition of compost or additional growing media. This also needs to be distributed across the top (better yet, worked-in) and leveled. When I try that with the garden rake, it takes much longer than it should, results in some of the dirt spilling over the sides of the raised bed, and still doesn't look flat when I'm finished. This rake solves both of those problems! This is designed to quickly level an area, and it captures the excess soil 'bumps' while it's skimmed along the surface, leaving it for distribution on a subsequent pass rather than piling up and overflowing the edge of my garden bed. As it's still a little early for planting, I've only had an opportunity to test it by spreading some finely-chopped fall leaves in one of my beds. It did a great job on that. I do some concern about the head's weight, however. That can be an advantage working in the yard, patching a hole in the grass, but it may be a disadvantage in a loosely-tilled raised bed, where it seems likely to sink too deeply in to the loose soil. But I'll know the answer to that in a month or two, when I can get outside and give it a real shot. So far, I'm hopeful that this will do the job for me. The size is great — a conventional 4 - 6ft lawn rake is overkill for my use, and would be mostly unsuitable in a raise be scenario. When they said "long handle" they weren't kidding. I think I must have gotten a few extra pieces because when all put together it reaches my ceiling. It's a little silly so obviously we take a few off, but hey, bonus, right? It's funny because I was worried about it being too short for my very tall son to use, which is a problem he runs into more often than not when using tools with a handle like this. It's as if they read my mind and included extra. The head of this is very sturdy and heavy and moves dirt around well. This leveling rake is very sturdy and a hefty weight. I think that is needed for using it to smooth our rough dirt. It worked on my sandy soil, but where I got hung up is trying it out on gravel. It not designed for gravel, but I tried it on that anyways. Where this tool shines for me is in smoothing out trip hazards dug by my dog or by javelina (similar to a wild pig). It's a sturdy, effective leveling tool. I ordered it with the 6 foot handle and it turned out that was overkill. Five foot would have worked fine, as well. ... show more

The handle is nice and long, the head pivots so you can keep the handle in a comfortable position while working. This is more for small areas, which from dimensions makes sense. But for me I did not realize it until I got it. I am talking patch jobs mainly. Anything bigger get the next size up. For what you get 5 stars for use 3 stars as you are limited. Worth the purchase for small patch work.
