I am not an expert with yarn crafts. I consider myself an experienced beginner. I did not know there were yarn winders, but this was a great find. I will say that the piece that the yarn spins around, that is detachable, detaches a lot while I’m trying to wind a ball. I follow the instructions and twist in the direction the arrows say for locking and unlocking, but it still keeps popping off every other time.     • Great choice (with some minor complaints)

I bought this so that I could re-wind all of my skeins of yarn for better storage and organizations. It does it's job well and was super easy to assemble and use. I do however, have a few complaints. 1) It started squeaking super loud every time I turned the handle once I got to my second skein of yarn. My fiance tried taking it apart and using WD40 on it, but it didn't seem to help. It was only once he started spraying it in any crack/opening to try to get to the issue, did it help. So far, it hasn't started squeaking since. 2) The piece that holds it onto the table can't get hand-tight enough to keep it on the edge of the table. I'm not even going super crazy with winding it or anything, and even if I tighten it as tight as I can possibly get it with my hands alone, it will still occasionally fly off at me in the middle of winding. 3) It can only hold so much yarn before it starts getting caught. I usually just buy the standard sized skeins from Michaels or Joanns, and I'll be about half-three quarters of the way done winding it, and I'll have to manually hold the wire piece (that feeds the yarn through) out further because it starts catching on the already winded yarn and makes everything loose/tangled. It happens when I use thin yarn and standard sized yarn. Regardless, I think despite those few complaints, it does what I want it to and I got it for a reasonable price. If you're looking to be mindful of your budget yet still wind yarn up, then I recommend it. All of my complaints are fixable/maneuverable, it is just at the cost of you having to do an extra step or wind a little slower. ... show more

I inherited a huge stash of yarn from my grandmother when she died. 4 gigantic bins of various yarns in hanks and balls and skeins. I bought this hoping I could easily make some cakes of the hanks and balls and that's exactly what I was able to do. Follow the set up directions and give yourself a chance to learn how to get the cakes spun correctly. Once I learned how to create the proper tension, the cakes were solid and dense rather than squishy. I was able to reduce the 4 bin cluttered yarn into 2 bins. Now I will spend years trying to use all of it! XD ... show more

It works other than the metal thread loop does not stay in place so I have to constantly hold it while winding my yarn. My hand gets a little beat up in the process.

I spent an hour last night taking this bad boy for a spin--LITERALLY! It took my yarn collection from a big mess in a hamper to a much more condensed organized mess in the same hamper--but it's half as full now! I can buy WAY more yarn as I have room to store it AND when I use the yarn, it doesn't tangle or clump up anymore. Simply delightful. ... show more

    • Meets my needs
Works to help me wind yarn from skeins. Clamps to my table for sturdiness. Doesn't wind into round balls but more like if you were buying cotton crochet thread which works just as well. I've tangled a few not paying attention but the attachment pops right off allowing me to disentangle the yarn. The thread holder doesn't lock in place securely but the few times I was overzealous in my winding causing it to fall sideways, I was able to lift the holder back up and into place with no issue.
