  • The Most Handy Tool I Did Not Know That I Needed!
The Klein Tools KTB500 Portable Power Station was a bit of an impulse purchase for me. I typically take care of my portable power needs using a 3800 Watt inverter generator. It has all the power I need both around the house, and at races. It usually lives in my race trailer and is used to power (or more accurately recharge) all my power tools, charge personal devices, and also power the A/C unit on my enclosed trailer. Where this gets to be a pain is that the generator must be wheeled out of the trailer, fueled, and hooked up. This is not a problem when I know that I will want A/C, but a bit of a hassle when the temps are cooler. I figured that this little guy would be perfect for when that isn’t convenient, as well as now giving me the option of running the florescent lights when the generator is already packed up. Little did I know how many other uses I would have for it. Since I got it just before Halloween, the first thing I used it for was to power the lights on the “float” that we use to take the neighborhood kids trick-or-treating with. (A utility trailer pulled by my buddy’s UTV) Not only was it able to handle quite a few strings of old-fashioned incandescent Christmas lights, (orange of course) it was able to keep all the ladies happy while recharging all manner of iPhone while powering a large party speaker playing spooky tunes. The KTB500 took this assignment like a champ and still had 87% battery life at the end of the long afternoon/late night. With the KTB500 performing so admirably on the Halloween mission, I went looking for something else to do with the portable power station. I wanted to do a fall cleaning on the garden shed, so I brought the power station out there. It did a fine job of powering portable lights to let me see better in the dark shed. I also had my phone charging during the project, and saw fast charging using the USB-C charger. (This was one of the selling points I used when explaining this purchase to my wife.) My phone was charged in a few quick minutes, while my work light was still going strong after hours of use. I had a few other projects to do around the yard with my Dewalt 20v portable tools, so I also decided to charge the battery that I was not currently using using the KTB500. It charged just as quickly as if I had it plugged in at the house. All of this use still left the power station showing 48% capacity. Although I have not yet had a chance to really push the limits of the KTB500, I have been extremely happy so far. This little battery pack may not pack the punch to run a Shop Vac, but it has plenty of power for what I typically want to do with it. I look forward to racing season next year as I will be able to run my 120v interior trailer lights without having to listen to the generator run. It should also make for a very handy base station for tailgating needs. Ultimately at under 14lbs. and the size of a small lunch box, the KTB500 will doubtless prove to be one of the handiest impulse purchases I have ever made. ... show more

  • A Great Alternative for Remote Power!
This battery is another amazing product from Klein Tools and can be a great alternative to using a generator! I've been thinking of purchasing a generator for some remote power options, but this in comparison to the high cost and noise level was the prefect choice for my needs. The size is fairly compact with a handle for easily carrying it anyplace you need power. The battery can take 5-6 hours to completely charge up when first taking it out of the box. While it is charging up, on occasion a loud fan will turn on, however it should only happen for a brief few minutes at a time, and not very often. Initially I unplugged it right away to silence the noise, but found the next time it does turn off very quickly on its own. Once charged up, plug in a USB device and press the USB 5V button to send power to the USB outlets. For a standard 120V plug, plug in your items and press the 120VAC button to send power to the 120V outlets. The primary purpose I plan to use this battery for is to remotely power speakers and DJ equipment in non-powered locations such as the beach, park, or during camping. With my test listed below, you will see that this battery will still give you lasting power with multiple devices operating fitting my exact needs! I additionally have a lot of power tools requiring remote battery charges, and the front of my house has no power outlets, so this also can work as a great solution for multiple uses . I did a few more tests with some other items to understand the lengths of charge and expectations listed below. Here are some of the items I tested... - Cell phone charging - Plugging in a cell phone into the USB power running at about 5-7W DC estimated battery life of 80 hours of charge time available. - Laptop/DJ Equipment/Speakers - Having three devices operating from a power strip running into the battery I was consistently drawing up to 50-60W AC with an estimated battery life of 9-10 hours. - Laptop - Plugging in a laptop power cable charging at .5-.7W AC estimated battery life of 38 hours. - Ryobi Battery Charger - Plugging in a tool battery charger at 30W AC estimated battery life of 11 hours. If you're looking for a remote power option at a very reasonable price this is a great product. I'm extremely happy with the ease of use and functionality it offers. The only issue I foresee is the lifetime of battery charge. The manual states up to 500 cycles, but we'll see how the battery continues to perform over time. I own several small battery packs from Klein Tools over the years that have lasted and still charge very well, so I expect this to have the same long lasting performance. ... show more
