  • Excellent
Great tool. Very happy I got the large one - the small one would be too small for any significant size wood. Built like a tank - I hit it with a 8lb sledge and it barely chipped the paint. A 3lb sledge works great believe it or not - even on larger pieces but a 6-8lb is certainly better for large pieces where after the initial split a 3 lb can take over. I mounted it to a log for stability. My recommendation is to mount it to a short log (8-10in high). I see a lot of people mount it to a taller log which in my opinion makes it harder to hit longer logs squarely. ... show more

  • FUN to use!
This thing is awesome. We need kindling for the fire pit, and when I saw this I knew I had found the answer. I am three months post on a shoulder replacement which means I have to be careful. But the three pound sledge hammer sets the log on the blade and the 8-pounder drives it through with just a moderate swing. I love this splitter and will not mind at all to take care of the kindling. I am no spring chicken with almost more steel in my body than mg car, so if I can do this, anybody can. We did not even mount it, we just placed it on the patio. ... show more

  • Bigger is not better
This is the second or third kindling cracker I have purchased. I have the small one and it works absolutely perfectly. Sometimes the wood I wanted to split was too big so I figured the bigger model would be better. In my experience that is not the case. The smaller splitter is much more effective at making a clean and full split with the wood. That may be due to the wood, as a rule is smaller/thinner, but the smaller version is better from my experience. Get the small version and you will be very happy. But do get one. They are fantastic. ... show more

  • great with the right wood and right hammer
This item is the real thing: heavy iron with a sharp blade. I have a maul and some aged wood that splits easily with 1-4 strikes. Had issues with fresh cut oak taking 10-15 strikes to split so now I let it dry some before attempting. I use a hatchet to tap the wonky pieces on the blade to make them stable but most pieces are not a problem. Definitely recommend bolting this into a stump for better stability. Its not as easy as a hydraulic splitter but I could use the exercise and its a heck of a way to relieve stress. ... show more

  • Very useful!
Great and easy to use to split logs for smaller pieces for starting and maintaining a fire.

  • This is the Cat's meow.
A friend pointed this out to me after using different types of wood splitters for kindling. It got old trying to split wood for kindling, one piece at a time and then bending over constantly to pick up the splitter, resetting the wood to split the next piece. This made life much easier and much safer. I can split kindling so much faster by just grabbing the pieces that still need to be split and then gathering up those that are ready. I had a small 12" tall and 14" diameter log that makes a great stand for it. I just sit in a chair with wood ready to split within reach and an old metal trash can to keep the kindling in. I'm going to get a Mortar tub to set the splitter/log in. I think this will keep most of the pieces together in one spot as I split, instead of flying around on my porch. I don't need it for splitting large pieces of wood, but I did test it on large pieces. I have Larch, Birch and various Fir's on my property. No issues with any of these species. I also trust it even more since it's made in Australia. Tired of China made crap. ... show more

  • Expensive but for smaller wood
Check the size to make sure this works for you. Don’t use it for wet wood cause it won’t work! Works well for split, dried logs, though. Easier than a maul or hatchet for sure!!

  • Excellent product!
Wow, this really does the trick and makes splitting up wood quick and efficient. It only took 15 minutes to split the pile in the photo, using a four pound engineer’s hammer. Although it’s way overpriced and the box it arrived in had torn edges (they really need to improve their packaging), the product itself is fantastic. Well built and incredibly solid. I was coming down hard on some of the logs and it handled it with ease. I’m glad that I bought this model and highly recommend it. ... show more
