  • Absolutely love my Kindle!
Digital Storage Capacity: 8 GB Offer Type: Ad-Supported Color: Black Option: Without Kindle Unlimited
You should 100% get a Kindle if you’re considering it. I purchased my Kindle Paperwhite a few months back and have basically only good things to say about it. Here are some reasons why I love it so much: - It’s incredibly convenient to carry around. I have a near 1 hour commute to / from work, and my Kindle follows me each day. I also just throw it in my bag on weekends, so that when I have a spare minute or two I can continue reading my books. The Paperwhite is so light that I don’t even notice the extra weight. - It’s free to read books. Most people I’ve talked to don’t know about a wonderful free app called Libby , which allows you to check out ebooks for free by connecting your public library card(s). This app is really great — you can put books on hold, get regularly refreshed estimates for how long you need to wait for your book to be available to you, temporarily suspend holds if you’d like to wait on some of them, and browse options from any library no matter which city you’re in. You also don’t have to worry about overdue fines, because your book will automatically be returned on the due date! With this app, I can read nearly any book I want for free and save time by not having to physically make trips to my local library. Seriously, this app is so great and not nearly well known enough for how much value it provides to users. Of course, you can always purchase your own copies through Amazon (and other sources I imagine) for books you’d like to keep. - I can read for hours on my Kindle. I had previously always hated reading from screens because of the induced eye strain, but the Kindle’s electronic ink screen technology (think a fancy version of those etch-a-sketch toys you used to play with as a kid) truly makes the screen look like a piece of paper and doesn’t hurt my eyes. It also has an incredibly long battery life, as I’ve gone ~2 weeks without charging it while using it pretty regularly. The Kindle Paperwhite also has font size and screen brightness adjustment options, which is great if you’re reading outside or on a plane when they turn the lights out so your seat neighbor doesn’t give you the side-eye. - Learning new words is extremely convenient. Whenever a word comes up in a book that I don’t know the meaning of, I just press and hold down on it and the definition is displayed. This is great because I can grow my personal word bank easily when I’d normally just gloss over unfamiliar words or disrupt my reading flow by pulling out my phone to look them up. Some other less important things I like about my Kindle: - The Kindle Paperwhite is waterproof (not sure about the other models), for your poolside or bath time reading needs. - You can link it to your Goodreads account (yes, that pretty jank-looking website you probably made an account for way back in middle school), which I recently found out is actually owned by Amazon. It’s an easy way to keep track of your progress on books and get recommendations from friends! Some things I don’t love about my Kindle (they’re really just minor inconveniences): - Who decided that it was a good idea to put the power button on the bottom right of the Kindle Paperwhite? I imagine most people hold their Kindles towards the bottom of the device and with their right hands, and it’s not fun when you accidentally turn your Kindle off in the middle of a page. :( - This one’s mostly to dispel a concern I’ve heard a lot and that I also had: “But I just love the feeling of holding an actual book, ya know?” Maybe it’s the novelty and excitement of owning a Kindle, but somehow this just isn’t something that I even feel like is missing in my reading experience now. Some people like having physical pages as a gauge for how far along they are in a book, but the Kindle does show a percentage of completion number at the bottom of the screen that can serve that purpose. Guess the feeling of holding a book wasn’t as important to me as I thought it was. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Kindle Paperwhite is priced at $129.99 on Amazon, with the standard Kindle at less and Kindle Oasis at substantially more. Cyber Monday and Prime Day (and often other holidays and one-off promo codes) provide discounted prices, so those are great times to purchase. My suggestion: try out the Kindle to see how you like it! If you don’t, simply return it. If you do, join me in converting all your friends! ... show more

  • Amazing little reader. Love it!
Digital Storage Capacity: 32 GB Offer Type: Ad-Supported Color: Sage Option: Without Kindle Unlimited
The media could not be loaded. I travel a lot and love to read. I decided books are too bulky, and man, was i right?! Pros: +Weight: When it comes to weight, my Kindle Paperweight 2018 edition is 6.4oz, and my iPhone 13 weights the same with a slim cover on. So it’s ridiculously light for being a reading device. +Build: it feels sturdy so I’m not worried it will crack in my backpack. I ordered one in mint green, so it has beautiful color on the back side, I don’t feel the need for a protective cover. I did knit a little sleeve but I wouldn’t buy the $20+ covers on Amazon. +Backlight: amazing to have for reading in low light. I don’t need it during the day, and inly run it to about 6/24 during evening reading with lamp on bedside table turned on. At level 24 it gets super bright! +Battery life: i must have read 5 or so books in past 2 months and only charged it once, because i was traveling and didn’t want it to die on me mid trip. As said above, i barely ever run at above level 6 for backlight and only turn wifi on when downloading books, so this definitely helps. +Ads: I paid for the version that comes with ads after reading other people’s reviews, and I actually don’t mind the ads. It’s only there when you reader is turned off (on standby). And it actually gives me suggestions or inspiration for further read. As soon as you wake up your kindle, the ad disappears. When you manually force your kindle to power off, the screen will be blank. But this is time consuming and powering on and off will be draining more battery. +Format: you can easily adjust Font style and size, spacing, margins, direction (layout)… +Progress: By clicking in the left bottom corner, you can flip between displaying page number, time left in chapter, time left in book,… - i only recently discovered this, and ‘time left in chapter’ has been super useful if i want to just finish one last chapter before putting the reader away before bedtime, since I don’t want to be clicking ahead, trying to find out how many more pages I have left. Cons: -Price: i paid just under $100 w/tax for this 2018 edition, and yes, it is more expensive than renting/buying books, but i feel like it’s a long term investment if it lasts me a few years :) -Touch screen: responsiveness can be little delayed when clicking between pages on library or trying to loads new titles. Just be patient and wait before clicking again. Definitely wouldn’t use this as a browser for internet search, but for flipping through book pages it works great. -Amazon Kindle Unlimited magazines: it doesn’t work well with magazine subscriptions or any books that have lots of pictures and were not made specifically for this format. If pictures get cropped or text ‘too busy’, magazines are difficult to read. I just prefer reading books on my Kindle, and looking at magazines on my tablet or desktop. -Downloading books from public library or your own pdf. can be time consuming if you don’t have the right format. Make sure the file you are trying to send to your device is supported by your Kindle. Otherwise use a free software to convert the file. Can’t send books that are too large, have to manually connect it to desktop and use a cable i guess. Summary: I’m very happy with my purchase and i read a lot more now that I have this Kindle. It doesn’t strain my hands as books do, even though the physical book will always have a special place on my shelf. Easy to use, battery lasts forever. Small and cute design. About 1/3 size of an average novel book, yet you can download hundreds of books onto it and read as you please. I’m taking advantage of the 3-month Kindle unlimited trial that came with my purchase but it also works great with my downloads/loans from my public library. I certainly don’t need any bells and whistles of the newer editions, this is exactly what I needed it for - reading books in paperwhite color. I certainly enjoyed it on a beach in Hawaii over Christmas! Highly recommend! ... show more
