  • Even though I read a little each day, a week later, I have still never ran the battery down!
Digital Storage Capacity: 32 GB Offer Type: Ad-Supported Color: Twilight Blue Option: Without Kindle Unlimited
I am an IT Professional, with a degree and many certifications in the field. I work on all sorts of technology. So I have never owned a Kindle before in my life. This is the first one I have ever owned and used. I am comparing it to my paper books and my Samsung Smart Phone and Samsung tablet. Comparing picture quality, I am extremely pleased with the Kindle over all other devices. Its very crisp, The letters look sharp and crisper than they do printed on paper. Its glare free and external light sources seem to have no effect. Even reading in the sun is no problem. I have had it for about a month now. As far as reading books goes. This thing is WAY Better for book reading than any Samsung device. Samsung devices have kindle apps and things, but its more about the screen and functionality of it. The screen on a Kindle is an entirely different technology than the Samsungs use. The Kindle is only black and white. But the thing is, Its entirely glare proof too. Virtually as glare proof as a sheet of paper. I have traveled and seen a lot in my life. My eyes are getting old. My optometrist tells me that there is no correction for my vision. My eyes strain a little now when I read. My eyes are just old. So now when my eyes get tired of focusing, That is all I can read for that day. I have noticed since I have a kindle, it comes with some unspoken features. Any book I get, I can increase or decrease the font size to whatever size I prefer to read with. This helps relieve the unnecessary eye strain. Its also very gently backlit. I would call it a kind of un-noticable backlight. Its very gentle. Just enough for a comfortable read in lower light conditions. So I used to carry my KJV Bible around and I would read a bit from it every day. Usually only a chapter at a time before I would get eye strain. I wake up in the morning and go out on the porch and sit in the sun and read. With my kindle, I can read smoother and clearer and read even more than I did with the standard paper Bible. Its a lot lighter too than my paper Bible. Sunlight isnt a problem with it at all either. I can read the kindle outloud better and clearer than I can read my fine print Bible now. I guess that is just a sign I am getting old. But its nice to have a good piece to technology to work as an aid to keep me reading! The books library isnt much of a problem either. I have books on my kindle like the one you see in the pictures that people cant get in print anymore. There are literally more books for the kindle than there are in print in the world. That book in the photo, "Messenger of God" was not in print anywhere at the time of this review and could not be obtained in paper anywhere. Its available on the Kindle and is one of the primary reasons I purchased the kindle overall, I wanted that specific book. Kindle library had it. As a new user, I have learned a lot about how kindles are released and how to buy things for them. They are not progressive like your smartphone is in the technology. For example, Kindle released a 10th gen 2018 model Kindle you can get now with 32Gb of memory. Yet the successor model, a 10th generation Kindle released for Christmas 2019 only has 4Gb of memory, and only 2.7Gb of that is available for books to be stored on. So the 2018 model is actually better to own. They are all different sizes too. You have to take careful look at your model number when you go to buy a case! MAKE SURE YOUR EXACT MODEL NUMBER MATCHES THE CASE YOU BUY! even though they are both 10th gen kindles, the 2018 release is larger than the 2019 release! You have to pay careful attention to that. Search literally using your model number in the search field too. I love the added features like a magnetic "Wake Up" feature in my new case. I just open the lid and it automatically wakes up and ready to read! Thats awesome! So I have also read about a new feature where a person can link their DROPBOX to their kindle books library. I have not figured it out yet, but that sounds really cool! If anyone else reading this knows how it works, I would welcome a reply with instructions! So I would think of a kindle this way. Kindles are very dedicated book reader devices. They do that one thing and do it very well! The PaperWhite 32Gb 2018 release is the model to get right now. If you want to take your reading seriously, or if reading is at all important to you, A Kindle is a great way to go. I would highly recommend it. I am a new and happy customer. I just hope Amazon as a company works out to be a good company to do business with as I go along. Many of these larger corporations have become so political that they treat customers differently based on ideology or differences of opinion. I dont think this is good or decent way to do business. I can only hope I suppose. I like the device. I hope I can be unnoticed by the corporate politics and keep on using it! I really enjoy my new reader! Thank you for making a great product! I am a happy customer! ... show more

  • Impressive Product Overall
Digital Storage Capacity: 8 GB Offer Type: Ad-Supported Color: Black Option: Without Kindle Unlimited
I bought the Kindle Paperwhite 2018 edition, 8 GB of storage with Special Offers for myself because up until I received it, I've been reading with the Kindle app on my Samsung Galaxy S9 phone instead. While the Kindle app on my phone was great, my eyes were really straining on the smaller screen and I'm a voracious reader. I was looking for something in a larger screen, but won't utilize the other feature and capabilities of a tablet, and beyond Kindle have no use for one at all. Overall, I'm highly impressed with this little Kindle device. I want to start by mentioning the Special Offers, as in all the reviews I read and heard about the device, the Special Offers weren't more than a footnote. They aren't intrusive at all, it's just on the main screen and that's it. They don't interrupt reading at all, and the Kindle Paperwhite personalized my Special Offers based on my reading, Kindle browsing history, and purchases so a lot of the ads that come through are actually interesting to me and in fact one or two of the ads have made me drool enough to purchase whatever book they were trying to peddle. That is definitely a plus, and yet a terrible thing because I AM such a voracious reader and I know I'm going to be spending a lot more money on Kindle books but at least the majority of the ads are tailored to the type of books I enjoy reading. I'm definitely not complaining about the Special Offers, nor will I pay to have them removed when the next ad that is displayed on my Kindle's screen might be a book I might like. Some may find the ads annoying just because it's an ad, but I find it enjoyable and definitely not intrusive in the slightest. The battery life - the Kindle came out of the box at 60% battery life and took virtually no time at all to charge to 100% on my phone's quick charger. I spent from 3 pm until almost 11 pm doing nothing but reading (when I said I'm a voracious reader, I meant it). My Kindle went from 100% battery to only 81% and from 11 pm until 8:30 am, only lost 2% battery. That is absolutely amazing to me and worth every penny I spent on the Kindle. I can't do that with my phone or a tablet; those batteries drain so quickly but this Kindle will last me all day long and still won't need to be charged at night. That's such a huge plus for a reader like me! The light on the Kindle Paperwhite is amazing, and even in my dimly lit room I don't need to have it much above 5 or 6 on the brightness. Although my phone boasts an almost 6" screen, truly the Kindle screen is much larger and thus much easier to read especially with the matte finish. My eyes strain far less on the Kindle even with almost a solid 8 or more hours of nothing but reading. This Kindle screen isn't too large, but it's definitely not too small either, it's just right. It's almost like you have a physical book in your hand, as far as relative size goes, though a little larger than your common paperback. I don't use Audible because I can't pay attention to a book when I'm listening to it being read to me, so the 8 GB of storage (more like close to 6 GB usable), holds plenty of books for me. I only have just a handful downloaded at any one point in time, but even the 10 or so books I have downloaded at once still doesn't take the storage space down anywhere near the 5 GB mark. So 8 GB is more than plenty for just regular printed books if you're like me and suddenly develop a case of A.D.D. when it comes to audiobooks. The speed of the device is just fine too. I won't say it's excellent compared to my Galaxy S9, but that's apples and oranges. For an e-reader the speed is great. There is just a little lag, but not enough to become anything beyond just barely noticeable. It's not annoying at all. It takes maybe a second or so to respond. When turning the page, even reading at a quick pace I'm able to keep up with the story on the next page from where it left off without interruption. The overall build quality is excellent. It is light weight and thinner than I expected. Yes it's plastic, but it doesn't feel cheaply made. It's comfortable to hold in one hand, or two if you like. The only thing I would change about the build is the power button - maybe I'm just used to them being on the right side of the device near the top... but the only thing I would change is the placement of the button. Overall, I'm very satisfied and impressed with my purchase. This was an excellent buy, and my next Kindle purchase is going to be one for a couple other people in my life who read just as voraciously as I do. ... show more
