Drilled several test wholes in hard packed red clay and performed well. Use it to bore out holes for planting flowers and shrubs. Does it nicely. Need to watch chuck as it will loosen up on deep holes.

These are ok especially if you have loose, friable soil like in a raised bed garden, then they work fine. However these are incapable of penetrating through moist clay soil - you will not get far enough down into the soil to plant tulip bulbs. I love to garden but don't love digging the holes for new plants. I have transitioned to primarily container gardening to avoid digging. There are still some plants I like to put in the ground. This tool helped me plant 3 hibiscus plants this afternoon in a short time.
