  • Fun game. Poorly designed. Puzzles to solve are on paper.
This is a nice game. The game itself is fun to play. The puzzles are challenging and doable with increasing levels of difficulty. Fun for kids age 8+ up through adults of all ages. Plastic pieces seem hearty and the directions and puzzles store in a little drawer underneath. But there are some problems. First of all, the puzzles that are necessary to play the game - it is not a game without them - are printed on folded piece of paper. I am guessing that the paper puzzle directions will rip, fall apart, and disintegrate long before the game falls apart. It is a highly fallible way of providing the puzzles. They should at least be in a little book or laminated. Next, the drawer is too shallow to hold the paper with the directions and the paper with the puzzles to solve. We quickly had to put the directions elsewhere and not with the game. Finally, given there is a nifty little drawer underneath, it's a shame it wasn't made deep enough to store the pieces that are not used in the short games (and the afore mentioned directions). So this "travel" version results in loose pieces all over the floor of the car. Moving on to the coffee table, pieces wound up on the floor, though maybe that one may fall under operator error. I give this game 5 stars for fun to play. I give it 1-2 stars for actual design of the game. We have enjoyed it since we got it a week ago. The puzzle pages have already taken a beating. The poor design and poor functionality lead me to a do not recommend, would not buy again, and had I known I would not have bought at all. While the game itself is really fun, it's a poorly designed system ultimately leads to a not so portable, not long lasting game. There are larger versions of this game. I am not particularly familiar with them. If the puzzles for the larger colored version are provided on paper, one would have the same problems of the game pieces long outlasting the necessary puzzles to solve. I already photocopied the puzzles just in case. But the original paper puzzles are on a very long folded piece of paper, so I wound up with copies where puzzles are half cut off on 8.5 x 11 paper. It's just all rather tedious. ... show more

  • Fun puzzle
It's a fun puzzle to use on road trips or something. It gets boring to play it every day but it will keep you occupied for a long time. And I like how there are simple puzzles to some that I won't even try they are so hard.

  • Needs better documentation, and some design tweaks
We made our own pentamino pieces out of cardboard. After some fun, we wanted to get a 3D version to make 3D puzzles. Pros: -compact case travels ok -good tactile feel, not as good as wood, but ok -cooperative and competitive games to play Cons: -lid doesn't latch. if traveling, you will need a rubber band to secure lid. -documentation included is very poor, no graphic puzzles, only tables of piece configurations. It really helps to have some background and already be familiar with how the puzzles work. -The online documentation is for the larger game which includes pieces NOT included in this version (single square cubes to fill in gaps for younger kids or those learning). -plan on downloading or purchasing a book of puzzles to create interesting 2D and 3D shapes. Documentation is only designed for creating rectangles of various shapes. This would be waaaay better with more complete documentation and more interesting puzzles (online or included). Website is primarily in French. Even the english version of the website uses a lot of French. ... show more

  • Great way to pass the time
I bought the Katamino Pocket - Travel size to have something to do on my down time besides play on the phone or computer. This is a perfect mind developing game that you can play on your own or share with the kids :-). I really couldn't ask for anything more it was exactly what I thought it would be. The whole game itself is very sturdy. Its a very challenging game there are so many different variations of puzzles that you can solve. Great way to pass the time. ... show more

  • Underwhelming as a logic puzzle and implementation
I bought a bunch of pocket-sized logic puzzles to try them out. This was one of them. I can see the value of pentominoes variants for children in terms of understanding geometry, symmetry, and basic problem solving, but it's not clear to me that there is any real logic involved in this solitaire puzzle for adults. Sure, the pieces have to fit, but it quickly devolves into a trial-and-error brute force problem. There are no internal constraints, such as in Sudoku variants, that allow logical thinking to exclude a branch of possibilities. There are no real strategies for starting a puzzle. Thus, you're left to try out each possibility iteratively. In this sense, harder puzzles are hard only because it takes on average longer for brute force to discover the solution. This also implies that you don't really get better at any logical skill as you progress through the difficulty stages. It's all just trial and error, and that doesn't really involve thinking. You might as well be rolling 10 dice until all of them come out as 6s. Having said that, there is a certain zen-like quality to mindless packing. The physical design also leaves something to be desired. The bottom tray for 2 thin pamphlets is much larger than it needs to be, and so the whole puzzle feels unnecessarily bulky especially for a pocket edition. The lid is also not exactly secure when closed. Compare for example with the more compact designs of IQ Twist/Fit/Link from SmartGames. ... show more

  • although I wouldn't recommend playing on anything but a stable surface since there ...
Saw Kataminos in a store the other day and wanted to get the full size but the price put me off! This smaller version gets the job done for on-the-go brain teasers, although I wouldn't recommend playing on anything but a stable surface since there are a lot of small pieces. The Kataminos are small but the plastic is hardy. The pieces are stored in the top compartment (where you play the game), so the drawer holds two thin pamphlets that show you the storing configuration as well as game instructions. The drawer for the instructions could be smaller to reduce the height of the box, but I personally don't mind since I keep these Kataminos in my desk. ... show more
