  • Great EXCEPT its breaking!
Size: Concert Color: Bundle w/ Gig Bag
I got this in November and only 5 months later, the neck is starting to separate from the body by about 3/4 inch. It's a beautiful instrument, great for beginners, easy to play, great price, BUT I am questioning the craftsmanship of this product. I think I will reach out to the company regarding this issue because I expected better quality. Pretty disappointed. ... show more

  • Not worth it. Spend your money elsewhere.
Size: Baritone Color: Bundle w/ Gig Bag
I've bought two ukuleles from Kala before, and they are fantastic. I have a Kala Tenor and Kala Soprano. I love them both. I'm saying this because Kala is a good brand, and I trust them to give me a quality instrument. I'm not so sure I trust them that much after getting this ukulele. The tuner, the spare strings, and the strap are great. They're all the same as you see them in the picture. I haven't looked at the CD or bothered with the free lessons enough to for a useful review of them. The polishing cloth is a polishing cloth. Nothing special. Now onto the ukulele. When I first opened it up, my first impression was that it looked cheap, but good. As a started to tune it and play it and really look at it, I realized that it's not good. There's a ding on the headstock and the body. The D string and G string both started unraveling as I tuned them. The B string buzzed no matter what I tried to do to fix it. The neck is warped, and the back is curved a bit. It may be hard to see in the picture of the bundle, but the tuning pegs are plastic. Cheap plastic. One of the plastic tuning peg covers wasn't even attached. The only thing holding it on is the D string coiled into the tuning peg. The dots on the side of the neck to show fret numbers are lopsided and fuzzy. As for the tone of this instrument, it's a little muted, but I feel like that is the overall tone of most baritone ukuleles so I don't know if it's necessarily a bad thing. I was really excited for this uke and really excited to play it. Unfortunately, it's not as exciting in person. UPDATE: The G string broke and I've only been playing it for a day. This uke gets worse and worse the more I play it. ... show more

  • It would be good for a beginner
Size: Tenor Color: Bundle w/ Gig Bag
Playing nonstop for a day, here are my thoughts so far: The minor things: 1) The bag is adequate. It's not padded but is well constructed, and has both hand and shoulder straps. But, the one I got is also emblazoned with "Kohala," which is a different brand entirely 2) The DVD looks good--I've skimmed through it, and although there isn't anything different than what you can find online, it's professionally produced and logically planned. It would be good for a beginner, and also covers other uke types (like baritone) that have entirely different considerations, so it's worth keeping in the library in case I ever change my preferred instrument. 3) The polishing cloth is a polishing cloth. Good quality and works, but the wood on this instrument is not a super-smooth, super shiny sanded and lacquered finish, so it doesn't "polish" much. (Note: I prefer the rustic look over the super shiny-this is a beautiful uke!). 4) The tuner I got is a GREAT hidden gem. it's a standard generic you can get for a couple of bucks, but works flawlessly. It's digital chromatic and will tell you the note you're tuned to, and provide both "arrow" feedback in terms of which way you need to tune, as well as an "all is good green" backlight when you're perfectly in tune. It's also very lightweight and small, and can be kept on the head for frequent adjustments during those first few break-in weeks when the strings are stretching and you have to retune all the time. Now on to the uke: It's not my first, and won't be my last, but I LOVE this. It is a beautiful instrument-wood is rustic but flawless, and the construction is mostly excellent. The sound is wonderful. Mine came with Aquila Nylgut strings preinstalled. I've read conflicting reports on whether Makala is shipping with these standard, or if they were installed by the vendor, and so I don't know if you'll get them, but they are absolutely phenomenal. They still have to break in and stretch, but when they're in tune, they're wonderful with a rich warm sound with just enough "twang." Again, the uke itself is of generally excellent construction. The only problem I see relates to small pieces, but is really annoying--although the tuning machines themselves are well constructed and tune well, and hold their position, there are small decorative plastic collars on the front of the head around the tuning pegs. These are non-structural (decorative only), but are quite loose in both a lateral and vertical orientations around the peg. If you shake the uke, they rattle, and when playing, they are resonant on the C string, so if you play that string they create a "buzz" that you can hear even at normal volume. I put felt shims beneath them which seemed to help. In the balance of things, this still gets five stars. ... show more

  • Perhaps Mine Was Rare Case, But Had Buzzes That Forced Return
Size: Baritone Color: Bundle w/ Gig Bag
Kala has a stellar reputation & have an KA-15S that is wonderful. Thought I would plunk down a little more for this Makala which is Kala's starter brand. I was disappointed. Was some problems with finish, not bad, I could have lived with it. But after tuning it up there were two buzzes in it. One was a damaged D-string, not a big deal, happens to wire wrapped strings & easy to replace. But, 2nd buzz was on B-string, very bad, right up by nut. Tries to tame it, but likely need a luthier to fix -- so ended up returning it. Mine may have been an outlier, but was enough for me to decide to either go with a low end model that costs less than 1/2 or step-up to a true Kala KA-15B Baritone Ukulele for $40 more. ... show more

  • I really love this Ukulele
Size: Concert Color: Bundle w/ Gig Bag
I really love this Ukulele. The strings are great, the DVD is helpful (but short). The case holds it fine with some room to spare(although it is flexible, I would prefer a hard case I think). The digital tuner is really excellent and easy to use. After a couple weeks of daily playing, it stays almost perfectly in tune. I still fine tune it each time I pick it up, but the tweaks necessary are really small. My one and only complaint is that the grommets around the tuning pegs, which appear to be completely decorative, rattle sometimes while playing. It makes a little buzz. When I eventually restring (six months to a year) it I'll probably replace those grommets with something quieter. It's not enough to ruin the sound or make it unplayable. The sound of the instrument is surprisingly loud and very sweet. This is my first ukulele, and I would absolutely recommend it to other beginners. ... show more
