  • Pretty hollow sounding and intermittant effects
It didn't take me very long to not like this instrument. That started when I removed the 'uke egg' case from the Styrofoam nest in comes encased in (nice packaging). I already knew I didn't like the case but I wasn't prepared for the weight. Not only is it impractical but it just weighs a ton! This is supposed to be a 'travel' uke. The instrument itself is fairly light for a plastic uke but put it in that case and you have quite a hefty package to carry around. Just the handles alone are about a half a pound of solid steel. That's about the only thing that feels high quality though. The rest of the case just seems cheap. Particularly the lining. It feels like something you would line a piece of throw away packaging with. Does not feel good to the touch. And the fact you can't set it down on edge is just a really, really stupid form over function decision because as much as it weighs you are going to be setting it down (on it's back) a lot! And it just feels like too much of the price went into that impartial case. But I didn't buy it for the case. The instrument has a nice design and is what drew me to it but the fit and finish don't feel like $400. It's little things like machining marks around the retainer rings that hold the tuning machines in place and the nickle finish on them. I've seen tuners with a much more jewel like finish. It's obvious the chrome bezel around the sound hole is plastic from the molding. The control knobs feel plasticity and cheap and don't move very smoothly (more on that soon). And the finish, while fine for the body is not exactly ideal for the neck. It feels like a mat finish and not a satin finish so it's not very slick or smooth. It just doesn't feel as high end as the design and hype would suggest. But I could live with the fit and finish for the price if it performed well. Well again I feel quite let down. With the very first strum I noticed it sounded like I was hearing the inside of the instrument more than the outside. A full but hollow sound. It's not too bad when picking but when strumming it sounds like you are sitting inside the sound hole. I think the hole location is to blame but who knows. Next came the effects. This is when the real issue started. I seem to have an intermittent problem with the effects knob that controls the amount of chorus or delay. The effect drops in and out when I adjust the knob. It's working enough that I was able to try it but it's going to have to go back as just doing a percussive strum was causing it to drop in and out occasionally. Probably a bad solder joint on that knob. I like the quality of the effects but they are pretty limited in volume. And again the delay effect sounds like it's coming from inside the sound hole instead of radiating out from the instrument. The reverb and chorus sound normal are are pretty cool but again could be louder. The normal sound is pretty decent volume wise and can get quite loud when you lay into it but again the weird hollow tone is there. And I'm not fond of the neck simply because of the painted finish but that's subjective. The fret ends could have been finished a bit better for this price range. Some were quite sharp and just appear to have been ground and that's it. Really disappointing for a $400 uke. The intonation was fine but with the sub par sound quality and effects knob issue I didn't play it too long as I knew it had to go back so I didn't want to put any wear on it. I've heard this uke described as the Apple of ukes. That's about right. Overpriced and more style than substance. But when you hold an Apple product it looks and feels like quality. Not so much with this Lava. I had high hopes for this uke as I really like the modern design but for me it was a pretty big and quick disappointment. Really expected better quality for $400. ... show more

  • Lava U is a great company!!! This is a wonderful instrument!!!
Lava U has warehouse space at Amazon. So Amazon filled the first order. My first Ukulele didn't work the way it was supposed to. So this lovely company stayed in touch with me the whole time and was willing to do everything to make the sale right. After discussing between Lava U and Amazon, it was decided that a new instrument needed to be sent to me. So that's what they did. This Tenor Lava U is perfect. Everything works well on it and it's fun to play. As soon as I can I'm going to order the special Ukulele strap for it and the electric pickup. They have a kit that includes 3 specialized picks to assist with different play forms and sounds. But I don't use picks when I play. I have a lot to learn so maybe at some point I will do that. It's a nice kit. If you want the set, I'd encourage you to get it. This is a lovely instrument and this company is wonderful to do business with. I'm thinking about ordering the guitar from them whenever I can. More playing reviews need to be featured on the Ukulele because everyone I watched just sat and talked about it mostly. People need to see how well this Ukulele really works. So I hope that a professional will make some youtubes on this beautiful instrument. It has a very nice sound to it compared to my Makala Concert C, which was my very first Ukulele. Most professional wood Ukuleles that cost more, in the local music stores in my area, don't usually have the beautiful sound that my Makala has. The Makala was purchased from a professional performer, collector, teacher, and music business owner from Hawaii eleven years ago. So this Lava U Tenor Ukulele has a beautiful comparable tone. I'm very, very pleased with this instrument and it's well worth the price. This Tenor Ukulele has electronic features that you can use in performances. You can connect it to an amplifier or not as you choose. Whatever your playing capabilities or style, you can definitely show them off with this Ukulele. Thank you very much Lava U. :) ... show more

  • Good ukulele, pricey, not perfect, but it has a great sound and charm!
A very nice ukulele. It feels premium and has excellent features with a long lasting battery. The strings are a real highlight. They are some of the best strings I’ve played on in a long while. They hold tune for a long time and coupled with the manufacturing (very smooth fretboard with a slight radius and great feeling tuners) they just feel great and are very bright. The effects module is very responsive and produces great sound. The body resonates very well and does a great job projecting despite the small sound hole. This thing feels great and has a great thickness profile. But now for what I don’t like: the price. It’s a great ukulele but at the price it feels more like a fashion accessory or a show piece... even though the case is awesome. I would like the delay/chorus switch to be added on the exterior of the body. Having to reach inside kinda takes away from the possible blends you can make and reduces some of the ease of playing. In addition, the action is great up until the 10th fret where it grows very thin almost tin-like. I think it would benefit from interchangeable bridges and nuts. While not a perfect solution- I think it would be a good stopgap until something like a truss rod would be possible. Maybe a slight angle to the headstock could even out the action across the board if used in conjunction with different bridges and nuts. (A staggered bridge would be amazing as well). Lastly, at the price range for the what you get- I feel another $100 is absurd for a strap and charging cable. We’re getting into Apple territory with the “high end accessories”. All aside it looks great, and plays pretty well. It even sounds great when fed through pedal effects. If this is your first or second uke- pass on it until some upgrades are made. If you want a fun little uke to play with your friends, are able to splurge a little, and have some experience then it is an excellent piece to add to your collection and a great conversation starter. ... show more
