Jute is a marvelously versatile material which has been cultivated for centuries...... I will not belabor that history, but will simply state the facts about Jute as A ROPE.... Jute is very strong--particularly when woven into a rope-particularly a THICK Rope. The the tensile strength of jute rope can range from 150 to 200 pounds per square inch (PSI). A 1/2 inch Jute Rope can support 400 pounds and 1 inch 1500 pounds. BUT...... Keep it dry! Jute can soak up water and moisture very easily. Jute ropes can absorb up to 34% of their mass in water – without even feeling wet! As a result, they shrink whilst wet and are vulnerable to water damage and rotting. Try to keep your jute rope dry when using it outdoors. You may think that Jute rope is impermeable to water damage due to the smell of it---The Jute Batching Oil the fibers are soaked in is a light petroleum oil like mineral oil. The smell is usually described as similar to kerosene. Jute rope has strong resistance to pressure and torsion, wear resistance, friction resistance, good elasticity, and it is not easy to break. (The strongest rope material is Nylon. It is also considerably more pricey than Jute rope, and has it`s own set of downsides.) ... show more

This jute rope is just shy of 1 inch when measured. This rope is flexible enough to be manipulated into knots, wrapped around items, and through holes. The rope is made from 4 interweaved strands rather than the traditional 3 strand ropes that are made from manila or cotton fiber. The description goes back and forth describing this as both jute and manila, but it is indeed a jute rope and NOT a manila rope. That being said, a jute rope is better suited for light duty work because the fibers are not as strong as a manila rope. This rope should not be used for lashing items or lifting items where there is considerable weight involved. Typically, a manila rope is suitable for bearing weight whereas a jute rope, like this one, shouldn't be used for heavy loads because of the shorter, weaker jute fibers. ... show more

The rope is fine quality but I didn’t realize how much it stretched. I’ve tightened it about 4 times now and waiting for it to stop stretching.
