  • Great unit, you gotta do the math for your selected zone
Pattern: 13000BTU
It pains me to say this, but this excellent worker is the second unit I have bought as my little 8kBTU had a motor failure and the replacement motor was a little heavier unit which caused that one to blow a fuse. To avoid further damage and more shop time, I sadly put it aside until the end of Cat season here. That one has been an excellent and reliable performer until the motor overheated one day. This unit follows in the same build quality lineage, it's upsized and to the subject point, I chose this cooling size per the room statistics; it actually will begin overcooling even with less-than-ideal exhaust configurations following ideal gas flow and thermodynamic exchange principles not really being in line with HVAC scoping for balanced heat exchange (exhaust, intake, pressure/temperature/humidity, etc.) in a closed system) and energy movement. It's been reliable and easy to move. I chose the longer term test after I verified all the components were good out of the box. Packing was good, manual is well-written with (!!) contact numbers and related DoE statistics and while those figures were best estimates, they do line up with claimed "870 watts continuous" being in line with my calculations even from room to room, 90% continuous duty and no compressor short cycling/flowback or unusual closed loop Carnot imbalances. For R32, this is a solid implementation. Unfortunately, it's R32 meaning if the refrigerant leaked, you aren't going to smell it or know about it but you'll get the characteristic headache. The test cadence I chose was a room to room, differential, time-based cooling rate over time and I slightly varied the exhaust parameters, keeping backpressure intact (no mods to the supplied exhaust configurations) and it did not struggle with either space. Workshop is the hardest to cool/dehumid and it did not struggle there or in the upper bedroom. No evaporator/condensor icing and in the workshop case, it did so well I was able to work in there. It typically gets around 100F here, no cooling. Yesterday, it held up so well I finished out everything I had planned without issue and air temp in that zone was consistent, under 83 and I will take that for sure... Upstairs, I slept so much better, it's quiet, sleep improved and that upstairs is hard to cool with central plumbing and hot airlock usually affecting the upstairs plenum runs. This addition kept the air moving and consistently cool. You have to watch where you put the unit as it moves a lot of air, especially in that swing mode (venturi effect - air moves differentially faster so make sure you give that unit plenty of free space) and in dehumidifier mode, extracts A TON of water to the point of setback. I don't know about long-term reliability, or internal specs (motor size, PFC sizing, max short cycle time, etc.) but I will keep this thread updated. The last test might be at my demo at the end of the month, unknown venue air properties or size. I always budget a unit to be used anywhere, and this one would most likely work anywhere. It's a great value and I hope it holds up. These units are hard to scope down replacement parts for so keep that in mind! My poor old 8kBTU was impossible to find correct parts for, sans the AVR-style PFC capacitor. It's a weird motor so know if the draft/intake motor fails, you'd most likely be screwed as it's an unusual size here and engineered tolerances (in my case) are narrow on these things, you can't just upgrade (even by a small amount, matching PFC cap included) the draft motor size without it complaining. While I do component level repair, I'd have to FIND the correct replacements first. Also, these are 'HAZMAT LISTED'. You won't be able to do an RMA to shipper addresses, it's a disclaimer item. Otherwise, as always, read the fine print, look at your options, size your unit to the target cooling space, do your thermodynamical models, check your work, know your 'slush factor' limits are fairly narrow, don't put a too large unit into an undersized space, make sure your exhaust backpressure is good and also know this one uses evaporated water to cool the condensor which is an absolutely clever reuse of otherwise wasted coolant. You don't have to plumb drain line to this one unless you're running in dehumidifier mode! Added bonus! ... show more

  • Good customer service
Pattern: 13000BTU
First unit became extremely noisy after a few hours. After a couple of e-mails to customer service, the new unit has been installed and operating nicely for several days. Return/replacement process was straight forward and communication was prompt and understandable. Great unit for the price point.

  • Fan cover broken
Pattern: 13000BTU
Unit works great except within two days the fan cover broke. So now when you shut the unit off there is loud clicking sounds of the cover not self closing.

  • No regrets.
Pattern: 13000BTU
My JoyPebble 13K a/c works great. I live in a 1300 sqft top story modern apartment with 9ft ceilings and huge southern exposure windows. I have two 13K a/c units and this significantly cooled it’s half. Outside temps 90° to 100° F with humidity at or below 35% inside temps were very tolerable. It sits in the master bedroom and can cool that room like a refrigerator. It struggled a bit with humidity over 65% as most units do. Louder than the expected 56dB, my decibel meter shows 68dB directly behind the a/c unit, and about 65dB directly in front. But it’s not that big of a deal. It’s not louder than similar units. It’s been holding out well for several months, hopefully it lasts me several years. I’m happy. After several months more use, one issue that has come up is that the a/c unit blows the circuit breaker from that outlet frequently. The 15 amp circuit breaker controls 3 outlets (wifi, phone chargers) and two overhead lights and a low energy ceiling fan that runs on low speed. The circuit breaker built into the unit’s wall plug never trips, so obviously is useless=bad voltage spike. My other a/c unit runs off a separate fuse—a/c with same btu’s that has never tripped a 15 amp circuit breaker in over two years. ... show more

  • After a month of use, we LOVE this air conditioner!
Pattern: 13000BTU
This AC easily cools about 90% of my home, and it cools things off much faster than any other AC I have used before. I didn't think I would like a portable unit, but it actually has many benefits over the window mounted ones. The only reason I didn't leave 5 stars is because the remote control is almost useless - not a huge deal since I can use the controls on the AC, just an inconvenience for the remote to be extremely unreliable. As far as the Joy Pebble company goes, they are very helpful to deal with if you do have any problems. ... show more
