Description

The legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat is as strong as ever. Synonymous with 1980s New York, the artist first appeared in the late 1970s under the tag SAMO, spraying caustic comments and fragmented poems on the walls of the city. He appeared as part of a thriving underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hip hop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, which met in a booming art world. As a painter with a strong personal voice, Basquiat soon broke into the established milieu, exhibiting in galleries around the world.Basquiat’s expressive style was based on raw figures and integrated words and phrases. His work is inspired by a pantheon of luminaries from jazz, boxing, and basketball, with references to arcane history and the politics of street life―so when asked about his subject matter, Basquiat answered “royalty, heroism and the streets.” In 1983 he started collaborating with the most famous of art stars, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 was on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. When Basquiat died at the age of 27, he had become one of the most successful artists of his time.First published in an XXL edition, this unprecedented insight into Basquiat’s art is now available in a compact, accessible volume in celebration of TASCHEN’s 40th anniversary. With pristine reproductions of his most seminal paintings, drawings, and notebook sketches, it offers vivid proximity to Basquiat’s intricate marks and scribbled words, further illuminated by an introduction to the artist from editor Hans Werner Holzwarth, as well as an essay on his themes and artistic development from curator and art historian Eleanor Nairne. Richly illustrated year-by-year chapter breaks follow the artist’s life and quote from his own statements and contemporary reviews to provide both personal background and historical context.About the seriesTASCHEN is 40! • Visually terrific.
I’m an artist and love art books. So, with that said, I highly recommend this book. It’s full of great imagery, and the only thing I wish is that it had been larger. It’s about 9” x 6”, and it shows well enough, but considering the size of the originals, I would have loved it larger. Otherwise it’s great. Lots of good quality images at a reasonable price. ... show more

  • Book is great! Unfortunately it came damaged
The media could not be loaded. I love this book!!! Basquiat is one of my favorite artists of all time. Unfortunately, this book did come damaged. I didn’t send it back because at the time there were No more available. This is a smaller coffee table book. Its not huge so I did a side-by-side comparison to another larger coffee table book. Overall, I would recommend this book because you really can’t beat this price especially for the quality and the amount of information that’s in this book ... show more

  • Outstanding inspiration
Love this book! I'm not a professional artist nor an art critic so I am not writing this review from those points of view. I am a hobby-artist doing art journaling and love mark-making on layered multi-surface backgrounds using various art supplies. I may not always be fond of Mr Basquiat's main focal point of his paintings, but I think his use of lovely and interesting background colors and marks are outstanding. His works mainly use acrylic, oil sticks, and collage although a few involve ink, pastel, spray paint, and marker. The collages are overpainted, stacked photocopies. The paintings incorporate words, marks, symbols, interesting figures and characters - some cartoon-like. I see his technique as being done with wild abandon. Some of his mark-making reminds me of ancient cave painting symbols done on background colors that are lovely, innovative, and interesting. I've purchased many art instruction books to learn mark-making, color strokes, and layered backgrounds using mixed media supplies (oil sticks, acrylics, water-soluble pastels and paper) and this book gives me ideas about what I can try. This is not an art-instruction book, but a book of an artist's work. Mr Basquiat has given me tremendous inspiration for mark-making, collage, and fun color usage. I look at the book every day. The book also gives background of Jean-Michel's life, struggles, and accomplishments. Very interesting. I was very sad to learn that Jean-Michel died in 1988 at the age of 27. Thank you Jean-Michel for your art and to Taschen for a superior book and much-deserved tribute to Mr Basquiat. ... show more

  • Bruh. This thing is the size of a hotel bible.
I’m sure if I had read more info about the dimensions of the book I would have known better, the whole “too good to be true” adage and all that, but I have to admit that when this thing showed up I was underwhelmed. The box was deceptively large. The book was well wrapped in plastic bubbles, so it arrived safely, and that was nice, but it also arrived small… so very very small. I’m keeping it, it’ll end up on a console or coffee table, or regifted to someone that doesn’t care about being able to see details of the artwork, but I’ll also be keeping my eyes peeled for the full sized version, because this one is definitely giving fun-sized snickers. ... show more

  • I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life. Jean-Michel Basquiat
Basquiat might have approved of this damage, but it slightly ruined the excitement of this purchase. It's a self purchase, so I'm not bitter. Overall, it's brilliant.
