  • Never EVER buy "powered" speakers, buy real speakers like these and buy a Fosi amp.
Color: Black
These are genuine, real, actual STUDIO monitors as used in actual recording studios around the world. There are four or five "classic" small monitors used in studios, and these are one of them. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T BUY "powered speakers". "Powered speakers" are an unbelievable waste of money AND THEY HUM. All powered speakers, even expensive ones from name brands, are utter rubbish. AND THEY ALL HUM, ALL THE TIME. If you want to sit there listening to hum for the rest of your life, buy "powered speakers". Simply buy the absolutely incredible Fosi amp for 70 bucks (it's easy to find on Amazon - the ID is like B077GWVHHN on amazon) and then buy the monitors of your choice, such as these classic C1s Regarding JBL C1s, they are simply one of the standard monitors used in studios to make albums, as the final check to "how it will sound in real life". They're a "standard". For me, they are a bit too heavy in bass, but that's purely a preference and will hugely depend on your room, desk, etc (it would be like saying "do you prefer strat or les paul" - there's no "answer".) Be aware that with near-field speakers, they are incredibly sensitive to the position, exact placement etc. Thus, I move these around AN INCH or so relative to the exact place I sit in the chair, and it DRASTICALLY changes the sound. This applies to all small studio monitors. I use these (with the utterly incredible Fosi amp) for working with voice production and, just for me, they're probably a bit bassy. (But that's an entirely personal preference.) For music (say, typical pop and rock) they're incredible. Be aware that the sound experience with near field monitors is TOTALLY different from big speakers in a big room; it's meant to be. If you just play any ordinary music track you're familiar with, the Beatles, whatever, through a Fosi and on to these C1s, you'll literally hear a huge amount of stuff you simply never heard before. But again, just be aware it's different: the three experiences using (A) headphones (I mean actual studio headphones, not the idiocy sold by consumer companies) (B) large speakers in a large room (C) nearfield studio monitors with a Fosi ... all three experiences are drastically different. You really can't "go wrong" buying JBL C1s as they are so standard. Like in the analogy, pretty much every working guitarist will own a fender strat, sure, they may prefer other guitars or use others for different reasons, but it's a "standard item". Again, WHATEVER you do DON'T buy "powered" speakers. Buy a Fosi (70 bucks! one of the best amps in the world!) and buy a pair of speakers like this, and you will be a MILE ahead on sound with NO HUM. If these JBLs are too expensive, there's the small Behringer passive monitors (also named "C1" for obvious reasons!) at only 80 bucks a pair, awesome at the price. Or for say 3x the price you can get a pair of Auratones (which are the monitors Quincy Jones uses, for example) But whatever you do, buy passive speakers and a Fosi or any amp - don't buy "powered" monitors, a total ripoff. "Powered speakers" are for convenience music in your kitchen or whatever. But if you need ACTUAL MONITORS to sit by your computing gear to work on audio, do not consider "powered" speakers, buy these JBLs, or the passive monitors of your choice, and a Fosi amp. ... show more

  • good stuff
Color: Black
In my view, JBL has always made a quality product. These particular speakers are being used for the center channel of a 5.1 surround sound system in my home. I have not detected any audible distortion even when turned up to 11.

  • Great Atmos speakers
Color: Black
I bought these for use as Height/Atmos speakers. Small, lightweight, good sound, plenty loud. Bass: very good for the size. You will need a subwoofer for the real lows. Midrange: As with most 2 way speakers, the midrange is a bit weak but with a little EQ, they sound a lot better. Treble: Wish the tweeter was aluminum but still, for my purposes, it is just fine. Pros. Plenty loud, Light weight, strong cabinet, Very good sound for what they are and the size. Plenty of bass. Cons. Bass and the rest are not balanced very well but with EQ, mids and highs balance better. lower side on sensitivity 87Db so around 50 Watts is where they start to really shine. Wall bracket is not very flexible for aiming them. On mine, the grill cover is extremely loose. A few layers of tape on each side and it will be good. Spring connectors on back for connection. C'mon JBL, why not banana plugs. I highly recommend Monoprice 109438 Gold Plated Speaker Pin Plugs instead of bare wire. Over all.... I likey.... a lot! They will be great for my use as Atmos speakers. I have always liked JBL products and I highly recommend these speakers. ... show more

  • You really need a good dac and amp for this speaker
Color: Black
I use these speakers for my desktop computer. I listen in front of my desk which is very near. The speakers are a little big(5.25"), but acceptable. And these speakers can be placed in horizontal, so they can be placed under monitors horizontally if you have monitor arms, which is a big plus for my desktop setup, I have dual monitor setup and the monitor will not block these speakers. As suggested from other comments I bought a fosi audio amp TDA7498E 160w x 2, the result is not so good. If you listen in front of your desk, you do not need a 160w amp, actually the fosi audio TDA7498E never can reach 160w, but still too large, I can only turn 10% volume at most and the sound is already very loud. Also it has noticeable background electric current noise from the speakers, which is not acceptable. I purchased a second hand nuforce icon amp from ebay instead. This amp is maybe 10 years old, it can output 24w at 4ohm(JBL C1Pro), but it is really enough for listening from desktop. Actually I did not turn more than 50% of the volume. Though the nuforce icon amp is very old, it has almost no background noise, which is much superior than the fosi audio amp. Personally I also think the audio quality is better, too. I also has a CamBridge audio DacMagic 100 dac, connected to my computer. The combination of DacMagic, Icon Amp and JBL C1Pro is really good. They produce fantastic sound. Both DacMagic and Icon Amp are very old products, currently you have more choices at low price. But please purchase qualified dac and amp, not the DIY ones, or from unknown companies, which may not be reliable. Do not look at the numbers, such as 160w, they may be fake, and you may not need such a powerful output for near field listening. I think at most 30w amp from any big audio companies should be sufficient for desktop listening. ... show more
