  • Very easy to setup and use for kids 10 and up
This microscope was a gift for my grand-daughter 10th birthday. I had purchased some additional slides with a natural cells and tissues. She said this is the best gift what she ever had.

  • Well made for the money but its magnification isn't close to what's advertised
If the scope had been advertised as something like, "35x - 160x optical zoom", this would be a five star review. Unfortunately it clearly stated, "20x - 300x optical zoom" and even at $129, that's enough off the mark that manufacturing tolerances wouldn't explain it. Looking at the zoom range, instead of 15-1 my unit was closer to 5-1 and I returned it as it didn't suit my purposes. Too bad as it seemed like a very nice instrument for the money though truthfully, if I knew its actual magnification range, I wouldn't have bought it as it didn't match my needs. Although made of plastic, the scope had a solid feel to it. Nothing seemed at all loose or wobbly and when turning the focusing wheel, the image stayed steady, possibly due to an interesting design decision. Magnification is changed by changing the objective to target distance. For this scope, instead of the tube moving up and down, the stage moves and the tube is fixed allowing the tube to be firmly mounted and rigid during focusing. I didn't spend much time viewing objects but I was more than satisfied at the sharpness of the few I did check out. The screen turned on quickly and had sufficient resolution that I didn't feel I lost any image detail due to some pixilation effect. For the objects I looked at, the included lights worked fine though it's possible there could be instances where the ring lights could introduce edge lighting on slides. There was essentially no assembly; put in the included standard sized lithium battery and turn it on. I didn't try to display images on a monitor but the required cable was included. For the price, I thought this microscope was quite well made and offered good sharpness. What it didn't do was match up with its advertised specs. A hobbyist wishing to view items at low magnification should consider whether a factor of almost 2x over the advertised low end is a deal breaker as it was for me; I ended up seeing too many individual trees when what I wanted was more an overview of the forest. At the high end I had no particular application in mind but losing half the magnification out of the box would certainly limit the number of activities I could use it for. I could have accepted a +/- 10% difference from the advertised value, maybe a bit more, but almost 2x at both ends was too much for me. For a youngster with an interest in science or a parent/grandparent trying to cultivate such an interest in a youngster, this could be a great gift. It seemed solid enough to not frustrate a child with finnicky focusing or unsteady images and if not subject to real abuse, should withstand a bit of "gently rough" handling. So for poorly matching its spec sheet, one star, but for being a quality little scope if the buyer understands its magnifications limitations, five stars, for an average of three stars. ... show more

  • Great gift
I bought this for my granddaughter's 6th birthday. She loves it, as do her 3year old and 1.5 year old sisters (with assistance!) My granddaughter loves the professional one at the Nature Center near their home so I knew this would be a hit. I got the rocks and minerals collection with it and my son jokes that now we will never be able to buy her costume jewelry. ... show more
