  • well made
I was amazed to watch my 11 Y.O. put it together with very little help. I noticed that clockwise doesn't mean much to kids these days. After putting in a lot of little screws, I think he has the idea. The electric part doesn't work and I haven't tracked down the problem yet, but it should be a valuable lesson on troubleshooting. ... show more

  • Not a real 'Engine', but a detailed model
Steamex amazing steam engine. The steam engine kit comes handsomely packaged in a full-colored box with a photo of the finished steam motor and descriptions of the contents on the outside. Inside the box, in a pull-out tray, you'll find various bags of the parts that seem to be grouped by step or section. There is a large plastic Bass in the photo on the box to mount everything to the instruction manual, and they even include a tiny Phillips screwdriver in the bag with all of the screws. The beginning of the instruction manual gives a nice explanation of the different motions of the steam engine and the parts as well as their function. When you get to the actual assembly, however, they have pictures but no actual instructions other than arrows pointing how things should be mounted. I think the instruction booklet could be a little more clear, but I do understand why they've done it in this manner, I believe it's so that they can easily reprint the instructions into different languages. Once you have everything assembled, you'll need four double a batteries to run the demonstration. Yes, I said demonstration. This is not a functional steam engine, it's merely a model that moves. If you add water to it, the battery's power and an atomizer that will create the effect of steam. The whistle is not real, just a sound made via the batteries. Unfortunately, you can't run anything with this steam engine as it's not really a steam engine. It is a model of a standard engine. Therefore, their claims on the front of the box to build your own steam engine are really pushing the boundaries of reality. The majority of the ad text for this on the packaging leads you to believe that you will be able to create an actual steam engine when you're really only putting together a model. Is it a cool model? Yes, it's very cool. Is it functional? Only to the point that the batteries make things move, it's not functional as a steam engine. All in all, it was enjoyable to put the model together, as I happen to enjoy building models, but I was disappointed with the finished product. Then again, I'm an adult. A 10-year-old might be more impressed. ... show more

  • Fun, but not a 'steam' engine
This is a fun kit to assemble. It's going to take you several hours. For kids, I'd say NO younger than 10, and even then, they're probably going to need some help. First of all, realize that this ISN"T an actual steam engine- Just a model of one. And, it's not even really a model that's constructed in a way that is going to teach how a steam engine operates. But- It is a cool model. It's battery powered, and it does 'work', just not in the way that an actual steam engine does. Set aside an area to assemble it in that can remain undisturbed until it's built- There are a LOT of parts! ... show more

  • For Ages 10+; Takes 2 Hours to Assemble
This steam engine toy is very interesting; I had imagined it to be a steam-engine display with a demonstration on how a steam engine works, but it is more of a toy you assemble yourself. The engine part is very loud but my children do think it is cool and ask to "play" with it. Once you turn on the main power switch; you can pull the back level to sound the train noise, turn on the engine that moves in place, turn on the "fire" (which is just red lights on the train) and turn on the "steam". You can turn on any feature independently or together, nothing needs to be on besides the main power for the entire thing to work. It is recommended that you use distilled water with this toy, which we did. The instructions are straightforward and the construction process is fine. It took two hours from opening the box to completing the assembly. Each step is illustrated clearly, at no point was it unclear what to do. The circular part at the front of the train has a small slot which fits a small tab, it is important to line that up or else there will be a gap. The plastic is fine, although some pieces contain sprues which had to be trimmed with flush cutters or pliers in order to fit better. It will take quite a while to assemble, but that is part of the fun. The chain for the 'whistle' is very weak and came apart. I was able to fix it with pliers but it has to be handled very gently. The steam function is a bit lackluster but still cool. The engine level also requires you to fully press it forward completely or else it will not start. Sometimes this requires a little extra force that, after the chain for the whistle broke, concerns me. The lever has not broke though and the engine does work. This is definitely a kit for ages 10 and up; my son (7 years old) wasn't able to help much beyond applying the stickers or helping piece the larger parts. He did enjoy watching me assemble the toy and it was nice time spent together but it was a bit beyond his level. Both my boys (aged 5 and 7) did enjoy the finished product. ... show more
