  • Much better than the Google chromecast!!
Configuration: Fire TV Stick Lite
The media could not be loaded. I love my new fire stick! Ive had it for just about 2 weeks and it works great! I included a picture of the box that looked a little beat up when I opened the package, but everything inside was perfectly fine. I purchased this after returning a Google chromecast on Amazon and leaving a pretty bad review. Thankfully, the purchase of the Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite worked out much better. I purchased the Lite option for a few dollars less than the price of the original Fire TV Stick option. The only difference is that the Lite does NOT have a power button or a volume control. I don't think this is too inconvenient, but it might have been worth the extra few dollars just to have everything in one. Keep in mind that there are a lot of different streaming services offered on the Fire TV (netflix, Disney+, CBS all access, YouTube, etc) but while most of the available apps are free to download, most of them require a subscription to actually use. With that being said, there is a "free" tab on the home screen that gives options to watch for free WITH ads. If you don't subscribe to any streaming services though, and don't like ads/commercials, this device probably won't be of much use to you. I have an Amazon Echo 1st generation, and was easily able to connect it to my new fire stick in the Alexa app. As you can see in the video, there is a few seconds delay, but it works pretty well (and I rested the remote on the TV so you can see that it really is the Alexa taking control) Although there is no power button on the remote, the TV did shut off when I said "Alexa turn off my TV" but it did not turn back on when I said "Alexa turn on my TV". The Echo did not respond to volume commands pertaining to the TV. It's not a total loophole, but being able to turn the TV off is a little extra since I expected to exclusively need my TV remote to control power and volume. Either way, it was easy set up and provides convinient handsfree watching. Pressing and holding the microphone button on the remote while speaking allows all of the same voice commands as the Echo, without needing to say "Alexa", and the delay is significantly LESS than when using the Echo. The commands that I have discovered and used so far are: open an app; play a movie/show/song (if you don't specify which app, it will give you your options, or you can specify which app in the original command); turn off the TV; play/pause; skip/rewind; what time is it?; What's the news?; Home; open settings. There are also suggested voice commands that pop up at the bottom of the home screen every now and then if you just leave the home screen open. The remote takes 2 AAA batteries, and 2 were included, so that was nice to not have to go get any separately. A small extension cord is included incase things are cramped around your HDMI port and you can't have the Fire Stick pointing straight out. I did not need this, but it seems like an important feature to make sure noone has any trouble setting the device up. Overall, this is a great device and has made streaming very easy. It works well and I would highly recommend it. ... show more

  • Pretty good alternative to ROKU
Configuration: Fire TV Stick Lite
This is a reliable steaming device that seems to be compatible with any TV that has HDMI ports. It is a rather bulky stick that does not fit into HDMI slots that are close together (as on many TV's). A short "dongle" cable is included in the package, so the stick then dangles on the back of the TV. However, this seems not to be much of a problem. Like the current ROKU streaming sticks, this stick also requires a separate power cable and power brick, so you'll need an available AC socket. Unfortunately, plugging the power cable (without the brick) into my TV's USB socket produced an error message, so I was not able to simplify the wiring in that way. This "lite" version of the Firestick does not have audio control buttons. I think that is both an advantage and a limitation, in that it avoids compatibility problems with your soundbar (a problem I had with another version of the Firestick). Bottom line is you'll need to use your TV remote to control the audio volume. The user interface is pretty easy to navigate, though I think not as elegant as the interface for TV's having built-in Fire support. The voice commands generally work well, and this seems like a definite plus for a device in this price range. The Firestick Lite also integrates with Echo Dot devices. This is not really useful if the Dot is in the same room as the TV but could be valuable if the Dot is in another part of the house. I think it is useful to compare the Firestick Lite to the ROKU Express (the comparable non-4K ROKU streaming device). The available streaming platforms for both devices seem pretty much the same (HBO Max, Showtime Anytime, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc.), though it looks like ROKU may have a few more of the obscure platforms. I was able to download the Criterion Channel on both a ROKU Express and the Firestick. On the day Discovery Plus launched in January 2021, ROKU had it available, but the Firestick did not. However, a week later, the Firestick did have it. The ROKU user interface is simpler and I think easier to use than the Firestick interface. Both devices have a search function, though ROKU's seems to work a bit better. The bottom line is that the Firestick is a very reasonable alternative to ROKU devices. I would not pick either the Firestick or ROKU on the basis of channel availability, since both are excellent in this regard. If voice control is important for you, the Firestick is a good choice. If you are a big fan of the Amazon Prime channel, you may also prefer the Firestick, because its user interface focuses on that channel's content. If you don't use Amazon Prime, then you may find that the ROKU user interface is a better fit for you. ... show more
