  • A little more work to install, but much more durable and efficient
Size: 78" Door Style: Extra Large - 10.25" x 15.75" Flap Size
I purchased this door to place in our sunroom so the sunroom remains usable in the winter. There is a small heater out there, and opening a door for even a minute in the winter pretty much negates any heat that has been put into the room. On top of which, my dog knows how to use door knobs to open doors, which is cool, but doesn't close the door, which is not so cool. This door seemed like the perfect solution, as it actually uses energy efficient glass in the window portion, and a magnetically closed hard plastic flap for the dog portion. Be sure to watch the online instructional video- if nothing else, you will get a better sense of how everything fits together! Installation is not overly difficult, but be prepared to spend some time making sure the pieces fit as desired. Remember that this is a "universal" kit, so installation is unlikely to follow the instructions exactly. And if your usage is anything like mine, minor adaptations might have to be made. Specifically, the trim piece that fits on the top of the unit and into the door frame needed to be cut down slightly for my door. There are handy grooves along the side of this plastic trim piece (presumably for this purpose), so cutting it was not difficult. I also had to trim down the spacers for mounting the clips on the side of the unit. A quick pass with an oscillating tool did the trick. You should not need any specialized skills to install this unit correctly- just take your time and be prepared to make minor deviations from the instructions. Other than a screwdriver and a way to trim plastic you shouldn't need any other tools. Once installed, the door works great. There is a small amount of air leakage around the pet flap, but it is quite minimal. The flap does a much better job sealing out the elements than a traditional soft plastic flap. The rest of the assembly is air tight and very well insulated. Assuming you install the included weatherstripping you should not have any air leakage around your door. For reference, I am in Ohio, and have this installed in a sunroom with sliding doors on two sides. The only source of heat is a small 800w electric heater. Even when it's 20 below, the room stays at temperature, despite the dog going in and out. As a bonus, your sliding door will still operate normally, and the for door panel will stay firmly in place even with the door open. I am using the largest model with an 85 pound German Shepherd. He gets through the door quite easily. The door does look small next to him, but he doesn't have any trouble using it. It did take him a bit of training to realize he had to push it hard enough to open. ... show more

  • The Taj Mahal of dog doors
Size: 78" Door Style: Extra Large - 10.25" x 15.75" Flap Size
Like a lot of cost-conscious shoppers these days, I always give Amazon a look before making a big-buck purchase for my home or garage, not only because I appreciate their customer service and no-hassle policies, but because they have lots of reviews to help inform my buying decision. The reviews for this door were pretty good to begin with, and in considering those reviews from dissatisfied buyers it was apparent that the problems weren't with the door itself, but with the buyers: either they didn't have the tech knowledge to install the door, or had simply bought the wrong door. So lesson one is, read the description and make sure you're buying the correct size. It took me about an hour to install this door and other than a power drill, no special tools were required. Directions were clear and concise. Everything fit perfectly and the two-pane glass window really keeps the cold out (and will hopefully do the same when summer comes back to Sacramento). The "extra large" opening for the canines is a little smaller than our old dog door, but my border collie and 85lb yellow Lab were able to navigate it without much difficulty. The finished door looks great and matches my white vinyl patio door and frame exactly; looks like the two were built to go together. Be advised, however, that the patio door opening for YOU, the human, will be reduced quite a bit after you install this pet door. You'll have about half the walk-through opening that you had before, so if this isn't acceptable, better think about another solution. All in all, this door is an excellent choice, a fairly easy install (just take your time), and I think you'll be pleased with the results. ... show more

  • Great vinyl insulated doggy dog
Size: 78" Door Style: Extra Large - 10.25" x 15.75" Flap Size
Needed a doggy door for my dog but I didn't want to cut a hole through our garage door. Found this non-permanent solution that claims to be insulated and decided to give it a shot. Pro's Double pane tempered glass. Even the doggy door is double paned plastic. Fits well into a 78" height sliding door. Allows you to continue use of your sliding door lock as it comes with its own set of lock catches. This is a well-built insulated doggy insert. Although it was 102 degrees outside, I couldn't feel any heat coming through the doggy door, glass section or the vinyl. The door actually looks fashionable. It makes it look like you have a multi-sectional window instead of a boring slider. The doggy door has a plastic sliding locking panel to allow going on vacation and locking it up. Con's The spacers are just a pain to get just right. Found that adjusting the spacers on the hooks to be the toughest part. Even though the instructions say that the section gap needs to be 5/16" minimum, it really MUST BE 5/16"...not anymore and not less. Otherwise, your "H" Section gap is going to be very noticeable and allow the outside air to come right in. Even though I had 5/16" gap, you can still see the outside light coming through on each side of the H (see pics). The "H" Section is not even insulated internally at all. This is the worst designed portion of the whole door. Ideal...re-design it, insulate it and make it to where outside air cannot just pass through. I recommend you caulk all the way around the door...and especially the H section. The slider opening is tight yet usable, but don't expect large people to make it through. Your screen is pretty much useless now. You can't close it without it blocking the doggy door. We ended up removing ours and storing it in the shed so we have a better view outside. Our sliding door does not fit into the door seal extension with the seal extrusions. It has to be crammed in there for the latch to work. Additionally, the outdoor portion of the weather seal on the door is exposed because it simply won't fit. The draft seal they provide stinks in that it will fall off. Just buy a 3M silicone draft seal and use that instead. OK, so what do I think of the door? I think it is the best one out there for vinyl sliding doors. It is a solid door and while it has some issues, I feel I can live with them (or work around them). I watched the installation video 4-5 times prior to opening the box. Note for those putting the door above a raised patio step. I made a ramp leading up to the door...otherwise, it would be a full 12" from the bottom of the doggy door opening to the top of the patio step....which is simply too high for a dog to get into. The door works great for my dog and he is happy that he can go in/out 24x7. I'm happy that it is insulated for Summer/Winter EXCEPT for that H Section. Will report back on reliability as times goes on... ... show more
