First, the explanation for the down-rating: This insert requires (per the instructions at least) drilling/modifying the door and frame, which may not be an option for some (renters or condo owners). It is possible to install the door without modifying the existing door/frame, however. Use a length of PVD pipe or dowel rod to act as the patio door "lock" instead of installing the door lock that comes with the kit, and use adhesive tape instead of the angle bracket to hold the top of the door. It is also marked down as it did not include weather stripping for the sides of the insert, which really should be part of the kit. I have an Anderson patio door, which has a small pin sticking out from the lock plate in the jamb to prevent accidental lock-outs. This pin needed to be removed for the door to sit flush against the jamb--no big deal, just a spring clip. The bottom sits nice and secure on the bottom rail, as my door has a raised rail that the door rides on instead of a recessed track. The top does need to be secured in some manner, as the insert is only about an inch thick, while the door is over 2 inches thick--there is play at the top otherwise. I have not noticed any drafts coming in from the door over a cold Minnesota winter (one of the reasons I didn't want to modify the existing door to install, I didn't want to have to uninstall and re-install with tools if this let too much heat escape in the winter). One of my dogs got a hang of it within a couple hours and is really comfortable using it on her own. My older dog doesn’t like having to push with his face, so I spent a week lifting it slightly for him and using treats to encourage him. Today, 8 days after getting it he’s finally pushing in and out on his own with a little encouragement. It’s well made, cake with some hardware and instructions, but since it fits in and stays sturdy all day, I’ve actually been taking it off every night by bed time, just because of how my alarm sensors were placed on my original glass door and door frame. There’s a small gap between the insert and my glass door, but I can see it’s caused by 2 rounded screws on my glass door. Unfortunately they are stripped and I couldn’t replace them with flat ones yet. The gap can easily be covered with the weather stripping provided in the box, I just haven’t done it yet. As far as the flap, it’s doesn’t really close all the way sometimes, but its made of a good thick material and all things considered, a small gap from a flap is a lot better than leaving the door open for the to come in and out all day (along with the dirt they were bringing in from the sand-pot they created), and way better than me having to get up constantly, 6 months pregnant, while working from home all day thanks to Covid times. Being their “door woman” had become quite a chore. Oh and the bronze color was a perfect match to my door. Got this from amazon warehouse, where it states only package was damaged, and that was exactly it. Came in a box, within a box. Everything was perfect, and it saved me a little money! As much as I enjoy having it, I would’ve paid full price if that was the only option. Update! It’s now almost 3 years later; door still working great. Moved and took with me to a new place, got a puppy and a rescue since and they both figures it out in no time at all! I take mine out every night and multiple times a day if I go outside, because our glass door is not as wide as your usual sliding door, and it’s held up with no issues! ... show more

Item was exactly as advertised and is exactly what I expected after a thorough internet search so I gave it a 4 star rating. Upside: Very easy to install, fits well with slider door, good quality, flap stays closed, bronze color matches well with existing door, look good when installed. Downside: There is no mechanism for the sliding door to latch to the dog door insert so the sliding door does not lock. A locking mechanism needs to be added separately for security and to hold a tight seal between the insert frame and sliding door. I added a bar type security brace that goes between the fixed sliding door frame and sliding door for both security and to keep the sliding door pressed against the dog door insert weather seal (see next sentence). There was no seal included to provide a weather seal between dog door insert and the sliding door so you need to add a foam type weather strip, as a separate purchase, which is very easy to install. The door is excellent for moderate climates, I would not use for extreme cold weather climate or in very hot climate with a southern direct sun exposure. Again, after research prior to purchase I knew of the downsides and with basic home repair skills it is no problem to install the door and add the additional weather strip and security mechanism. To upgrade to more robust dog door insert is over 4 times the price ($550 to $750) so adding these two items was not a big deal especially if you purchase them prior to installing the dog door insert.
