Description

"A true natural genius of comic art." — Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey Starting in 1948, Walt Kelly's newspaper-based comic strip Pogo lampooned sociopolitical issues from the Red Scare to the environmental movement. A gifted cartoonist who began his career at Walt Disney Studios, Kelly explored the virtues and follies of human nature with a lively cast of Okefenokee Swamp critters. Kind-hearted Pogo Possum headed the crew, which included intellectual Howland Owl; exuberant Albert Alligator; poetic mud turtle Churchy LaFemme; romantic hound dog Beauregard Bugleboy; and other impish personalities. Even readers too young to appreciate the strip's satirical elements were charmed by the eccentric creatures and their offbeat wordplay. This compilation features comics from the election year of 1952, during which Pogo's neighbors encouraged the reluctant possum to run for president. Their rallying cry, "I Go Pogo," parodied Dwight D. Eisenhower's "I Like Ike" slogan and provided real-life fans with a write-in candidate. Kelly's sly humor and flair for creative language—replete with malapropisms and nonsense verse — retain their imaginative verve for comics enthusiasts of the twenty-first century. Read more

  • Cartoons Without Commentary
Those of us who have been long-term Pogo fans will appreciate this reprint. It seems to be a facsimile of the original edition, although it’s been printed somewhat darker than I’m used to. All of us have heard the often long-winded commentary on the artist’s life and significance, so the absence of that is refreshing. A bargain at twice the price! ... show more

  • Pogo lasts
Pogo never disappoints! While the pages are thin compared to today's publishing, this book is exactly like it was when first published in the 50's. I gave it to my 17 year old grandson for Christmas in memory of my dad who loved Pogo. We always gave him a new Pogo book for Christmas when we were kids. My grandson skimmed it, then looked up and said, "I'm definitely reading this!". ... show more

  • Made my 91 year old Pop very happy
Thank you for mailing so swift. My Pop has been chuckling ever since he received this book. He read it laying in bed late into the night! We were delighted to hear his chuckles. I Go Pogo brought up great memories with him. When I find another Walt Kelly fan I will happily purchase from this Seller again. ... show more

  • A classic from possibly the best comic strip ever
I first stole this book from my father's shelf as a young boy and have re-read it countless times. (It was subsequently re-stolen by my sister, who still has it!) I am truly grateful that this book has been reprinted, and I can reconnect to the source of most of my sense of humor. Of particular note is how deftly Walt Kelly disposes of McCarthyism in 1952. This must have required no little courage back them. ... show more

  • I love I Go Pogo!
I just want to say, “It’s here — in my mailbox just like Amazon/and or USPS said. It’s finally here! Thanks for delivering. The person it’s for is 70+ next month. It was such a treat when I was a little girl. Now I can enjoy it all over again.
