  • Does what it does but needs mild modification
Style: Gaming Console
I had over 130 cartridges in the garage and thought this would be perfect. I can relive my childhood the way I remembered it. When I first plugged in the retron77 I could not get a picture or a home screen. After a while of leaving it on untouched the home screen appeared and I was playing games. Most of the games did work. I knew going in that not all the games would work but most of them would. The next day I had some friends come over to play and viola the fire button refused to work. Did some internet searching and learned this is a known problem. I almost returned the whole thing but the kid in me really wanted it to work so I waited and slept on it. The next day I went on youtu** and atariag* and watched some videos. Turns out the original firmware that is shipped with the game from factory is outdated and has bugs and issues. After downloading the updated firmware files (Hyperkin's website has the update as well as does other sites) I updated the software on the little usb micro card that is inside the console and can be accessed from the back of the unit. Replacing the old files with the new files was a breeze, just a simple copy and paste and replace. All I needed was a windows computer and a micro sd card adapter. It really was simple and took 5 minutes. Since replacing the card back into the unit my Retron77 has worked perfectly. Fire button issue fixed, ability to load many more games onto the unit. Before returning the unit try updating the emulator. I gave it only 3 stars because the emulator should work out of the box without issues. ... show more

  • Good emulator but overall very short on features for the price point.
Style: Gaming Console
While the emulator does work and read my carts, I am surprised at the lack of features given the price point. The number of ROMs you can load is limited, aspect ratio is not saved (so every time I start a game I have to feel for the ratio button on the back of the console) and there are not hotkeys or combos that can get you back to the menu without getting up and going back to the console. Some games you have to start every time after the game is over meaning every time the game ends, you have to get up, walk over to the console and start over. Hotkeys are a basic feature of virtually all of these emulator boxes including better systems like the AVS and AnalogueNTs but also the cheaper AtGames systems. $80 really is too high for what you get. If you are just looking for an HDMI version of a 2600 that will read your carts, this will do that. This is the basic list of my gripes Pros Great HDMI picture Good emulation so far, tried about 30 carts, all popular titles and all booted fine except for what might be a PAL copy of Robot Tank (Robot Tank ROM booted fine). Awesome controller. I watched reviews about controller problems but I guess they fixed them and new shipping units have the updated controller. Love the wedge design and it is not overly stiff and also not overly loose. Nice long controller cable. Cons No remote hot keys (you have to get up to restart most games) Aspect ratio is not saved and the aspect ratio button is one of 3 identical buttons on the back of the console Number of ROMs you can put on the memory card is limited to apparently 18 total (you can put more, but the GUI only shows 18) Limited length for ROM file names, like DOS you get file names like endur~ instead of Enduro. No goodie features like adding scanlines for the more retro look None of these cons keep you from playing games, but at $80, I did expect a better GUI/emulator setup with ability to do more through the controller (again, some sort of hotkey setup). If this was $40 or $50, it would be 4-5 stars easy but at $80, eh. ... show more

  • Great buy, 3 STARS here's why
Style: Gaming Console
The HYPERKIN RetroN 77 is an emulating device, and provides open source containers. This alone is huge for anyone into the homebrew network. I was able to play my original 1981 YARS' REVENGE and to this day I was not sure if it even worked. What I don't like: No multicart support. I have a Harmony cartridge and I am currently working with Hyperkin to figure out how on July 13, 2017 there was Harmony support and now there is not. Someone in a video said it was a software configuration and on forums I see it might be due to not using a FPGA. There is hope, like I said it is open source and you can change the increase of roms supported from 18 allowed to unlimited. Customize the layout of course. You can also update to allow long file name support. There are limitations to physical games that can't be played Pitfall 2, Decathlon, and Robot Tank. These are ones I tested, not sure how many there are as a whole. I'm not an expert, I just got into the Atari scene again. So comments are welcome to be added for constructive criticism. The CONS: I ordered the Retron 77 with two day shipping. The shipping was on time however the first Retron 77 device that came in did not work. It would get power, but no display. I was able to get a replacement no hassles at all. The second one came in, and the box was beat up, I can't speak for others but I keep my boxes and if I were to show/display an unboxing this was unsalvageable. The controller cardboard was ripped almost in half from the base, the sides of the box were bowing out as if it were a restock. It was fine as I hadn't shipped the first one back I just swapped the boxes. The controller itself looked like it was dropped and scuffed. I thought I would swap out controllers for the more eye pleasing one. Also found out that the first controller I received didn't work either. It could only go from side to side. So I am stuck what could be best defined as a slightly worn/used controller. But it works and serves its purpose. NO HARMONY CART SUPPORT I want to love this item, I want this to be a new comers all-in-one. As of right now, it's the best Atari device I can buy cheaply on the market outside the original hardware. It does fall short of this goal, but it also makes it farther than other devices out there. I enjoy it, I also enjoy the duel buttons. P.S. YAR' REVENGE is amazingly fun! Even in 2019! ... show more
