  • Exciting Read
Hailey’s Hotel is an excellent read. Not “ripped from today’s headlines,” nevertheless exciting, relevant characters and a wonderfully plotted story. Several surprising events keep readers glued to the pages, reluctant to put the book down, but when they do they are eager to return to the book soonest! ... show more

  • Still good after all these years
I first read this book in the 1970s. It is still a great read today. Good characters and plot(s). I would definitely reading The author's opening comments to put the book in context.

  • Still as engaging as when it was written
Hard to believe this book was written over 50 years ago. Some books don’t age well, but this one has held its own, as timeless as the day it was written. While the hotel world has changed drastically, I suspect much of what’s written here still happens on a daily basis in the large, luxury hotels. Intrigue, crime, deception, love and lust will always be within the fabric of our lives and Alex Hailey did an amazing job of pulling all those things together to create a story that enthralls and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I’d definitely recommend this classic as a great beach read or just sitting at home on a cold winter’s day. ... show more

  • Better the second time
I read the book when it was published decades ago. When I saw it on Kindle I bought it. Just finished it. Make sure you read the opening comments by Arthur Hailey. It makes all the difference to read it in light of when it was written. Great story.

  • Re-do
I remember reading this book when I first came out. Arthur Hailey was a favorite author of mine. I cannot believe what a joy it was to read it again. In spite of how much I remembered about the story, I felt like I was reading it for the first time. The writing is pristine. The story detailed and twisted. The characters real and easy to relate to. I highly recommend reading this book and any of his other books. And don’t be afraid to reread them. ... show more

  • A timeless view of a fascinating field
Arthur Hailey released Hotel in 1965, a year with some serious warnings for the future. The U.S. Marines started combat operations in Vietnam, Martin Luther King, Jr. was marching for civil rights in a hostile south while My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins dominated the Academy Awards. Only Hailey's third book, Hotel spent 48 weeks on the New York Times best seller list. It follows Hailey’s, by then, standard formula of normal people in a stressful situation in a business or industry researched and presented meticulously by the author. He typically spent three years on each book-a year of research, six months arranging his notes and 18 months to actually write the thing. His characters are sympathetic and the depth of his research reveals many details that even frequent travelers miss. The hotel starring in the book is a former top end destination hotel that is starting to show its age due to slack management and unscrupulous employees. Enter Peter McDermott, gifted and experienced hotel man carrying more than a whiff of scandal from his past that handicaps his efforts to revitalize what used to be New Orleans finest home away from home. Add in several attractive women, crooked employees, a corporate raider, a scheming union president, royalty that do not act royal, a pro hotel thief loosing his nerve and a house detective that should be in jail, then top it off with an aging hotel owner reluctant to make changes and you have some of the problems facing our hero. Mildly simplistic compared to the best of today's writers but holds up surprisingly well. Where it scores for me is as a perfect wind down read at the end of a busy day by evoking the feel of an era when things seemed simpler and problems manageable. Hailey's sympathetic treatment of his players made this a comfort read that went down smoothly. $8.99/book price divided by Amazon typical read time of 9 hours, 21 minutes=$.96/average hourly reading cost ... show more

  • Lovely melodrama
This turned up on one of my free/low cost book subscription services recently and I bought it. I remember reading this years ago, and decided to give it a try to see how well it stood up over the years. It held up remarkably well, considering. I had forgotten all of Hailey's shortcomings such as the leaden conversations and the tendency of characters to stand around giving each other lectures. He wasn't much of a prophet, either, but no matter. He could plot a plot that keeps you turning pages to see what happens next, even if you feel slightly embarrassed to be caught up in the melodrama. Will the Duke and Duchess of Croyden get away with a felony? Will the thief make off with a motherlode of jewelry and cash from the hotel? Will the hotel owner find the funding he needs before the mortgage comes due and he is forced to sell his only hotel to the man who owns a chain of cookie-cutter hotels? and so on and on. It's plot points like these and more that keep me turning pages until the book is finished and everything is resolved. That being said, I'm not going on an Arthur Hailey binge read any time in the near future. Unless Airport turns up for $1.99, then I might reconsider. I want to find out if that plane blows up. ... show more

Excellent writing, plot and characters. This author is superb in the way he develops a story and moves it along. He developed each character in a way to make them appealing and interesting.
